My favorite aircraft sound is a P51 making a low high speed pass. There is nothing like the sound of that Packard built Merlin low and hot!

I have several favorites - I love the sound of helicopters - must be all that time listening for the sound of my ride home when I was a light infantryman:-H , second the sound a gatling gun makes, from the 30mm in a Warthog to the small cannon in the A-37B, as a "ground hog" the sound of "ripping fabric" gets your attention , and finally the sound of a P51 flying laps around Smyrna, TN when it was performing touch n' goes at the old Sewart AFB!

I love the sound of yelling "It's Finally Finished!"

I don't hear it too often, though.

I live about half an hour from Grissom AFB, now an air reserve base. They had a wing of A 10s over there and would do fly bys over our boat on the local reservoir all the time, coming in really low. You can't here them coming but you can sure here them when they are by you.

My brother used to record F-18 taxiing off the runway. He would then get LARGE speakers, hook up the bass, and drive down a neighborhood slowly, with the volume all the way up!

As for me, I LOVE the sound of the SBD Dauntless when it's taxiing off. It sounds good like a Dauntless should..... :-)

Well at the Chino Airshow last May I had the pleasure of hearing a B-17 warming up it's engines before take off accompanied by 4 B-25's now that can tug at the old heart strings.

I just noticed this thread; I don't get over to these wingy things much. I live about 5 miles from Peterson AFB. I get to watch the Thunderbirds practice for the Air Force Academy’s graduation. I also get to hear C130s, C5s, C17s. I've also lived near Luke AFB where I could hear F15s. Once in a while I would go down to Tuscan and see and hear A10s. All of these are great planes and have a great sound, the "sound of freedom." But for my money give me a Mustang or a Spitfire roaring by at tree top level with that engine singing along. Gives me shivers just thinking about it. Of course throw a B17 into the mix, which I've also seen overhead here, and you've got heaven on earth.

To add to my previous post...

I remember when I was about 11 or 12 years old hearing a the most earth-shuddering sound... the whole family ran out into the garden to see a Vulcan lining up for a hedge-hopping pass over the Biggin Hill Airshow... truly awesome

I would have to say that the sound that an A-10 makes when it's buzzing over you is a most unforgettable and great sound, but a chilling and emotional sound is one I heard on Sept. 11, 2002. When i was standing outside and 4 F-15's flew in low for a memorial fly-by over Yankee Stadium just before a game. Guess lucky for me that I live in the flight path between Cape Cod and Yankee Stadium.

For this is an easy one after spending 7 months in Iraq

The sound of an Apache over head while on a convoy.

Huey, any V-12, any radial, afterburner.
