Hi all.
What is your favourite aircraft engine noise...or I should say...music?
Mine has to be the Merlin at full bore...makes my hair stand up.
Am I getting too romantic for my own good?
Cheers

Well ever since I was a kid...I have lived about 10kms from the local airport...now for the most part we have normal air traffic coming in and out with is less than spectacular, as well one of the largest military bases in the Commonwealth and surely the largest in Canada is only about 15mins drive away, (CFB Gagetown), and we get the CH-146 Griffons(Canadian UH-1N) flying over all the time, as well we get the odd visitors in from the US and across Canada to play war games with the base, but the best is, in a little corner of the airport, there is a hanger, and a tarmac that houses the area's firefighting aircraft. And in their collection is 10-12 TBM Avengers that have been converted to fighting forest fires....let me tell you....when they fire those rotary engines up.....you know it..and can be heard for miles around....and awesome sound to hear...and an awesome sight to see!!!

I live about half an hour from Grissom AFB, now an air reserve base. They had a wing of A 10s over there and would do fly bys over our boat on the local reservoir all the time, coming in really low. You can't here them coming but you can sure here them when they are by you. They usually gave a wing waggle, too.

I'd say the most destictive sound by Far (aircraft wise) is a Huey.......

Spent my early childhood ('65-68) near an old RAF Coastal Command base, and there's nothing like the sound of Shackletons with four Griffons straining to drag those suckers around the pattern

Okay, I live on the flight path (about 5 miles direct line) from Westover AFRES. They have a wing of C-5A's and about the same distance from Barnes MANG with the 104 TFS's A-10, so I get to see and hear them all the time.
But the two best sounds from the air are an F-4U Corsair in a shallow dive and a modern twin engine fighter (F-14, -15 or -18) in full afterburner.

ModelCitizen you didn't grow up near Kinloss by any chance? We used to spend summer holidays up there when I was a kid (more or less the same time period). It was from there (and the then Naval air station at Lossiemouth) which started my lifelong love of wingy-things....Jim

For me it has to be the sound of Merlins as the BBMF fly by, although I would love to see/hear a Warthog in full cry.

Speaking of P-51s, they had a fly over at the Indianapolis 500 one year when I was there that had 6 P-51s and a B-17. That was really something. An awful lot of piston horsepower there. Really throaty roar. As a bonus, Chuck Yeager was flying one of the P51s, IIRC.

:-) What else, the Merlin of course. Six together, when the Battle of Britain memorial flight passes over head is truly awsome :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Hi there
Why do you think I picked my callsign?... the Merlin !
in second and third places: Concorde , and when I was a kid at the Biggin Hill Airshow, a Buccaneer flew over the crowd firing blanks.... now THAT was something to hear!! :-)

I have to add my first choice for the F4u Corsair. This last year at the air show in my area I got to see and hear one fly. I love the sound of the engine and that 'whistling' sound it makes as it dives down.
Even tho there is nothing like the roar of a F-18 Hornet going full boar a couple hundred feet over your head.
Good modeling,
Wayne

O.K., being an old helo driver, I would have to say anything rotary just starting up, and manifold pressure rising!

For a aircraft I'd say a Huey or a F-15 but the best sound on a airplane has to be the A-10s "vacuum" gun :-)

Nothing like a 'ol cobra to start up the mornings. Also a J-57 is the best for a jet.

I live about 1/4 mile from Logan Airport in Boston so for me the sounds of all the commercial jets are just about all I hear. I once watched a pair of F-15's take of together, and they didn't sound anything like a commercial jet.
I would have to say my favorite sound is the P-51 with the Merlin, low, wide open, and going like a bat out of ----.

My first choice has got to be the sound of those 4 big Wright Cyclones rumbling along as a B-17grazes itself across the sky. Traffic just comes to a crawl as people look up into the sky and listen to the music.
Another that I will never forget is the scree from F404's up and down the flight line as pilots wake up their F-18s and get them ready to go flying

I live on the flight path of Cleveland Hopkins airport, so I am constantly hearing planes. (not complaining here, just stating facts)
That said, there is a local Airport here by the lake that holds an airshow every Labor Day weekend. Last year they had the Airforce Thunderbirds doing there thing. The sound of those F-16's roaring over our rooftops can make the hair on the back of you neck stand-up!

Well. In yhe summer of ´85I did my service on a litle vessel in the norwegian navy we had a huge ex in the north of our country. We were the bad guys(cold cold war and all of that).
This perticular day I had the lookout on top, and in this tiny fjord were we thought us safe they come. I saw them at a distance of about 4-500 meters,on the deck, below 100m high there were 2 F16s . When they were so close that I felt I could tuch them, they kick in burners and go vertical. THAT SOUND IS THE MOTHER OF ALL SOUNDS! I was on the edge of jumping there and then
