Nicholas, if you compare the two images of Bud Mahurin, look at the colour of the "Escape" stencil. It changes from yellow/brown to bright red. It is hard to judge the small area of interior colour if the image has been filtered or colourised.
The fifth image is much more definitive, with the wheel bays and interior looking almost identical.
There have been plenty of animated discussions on this topic over many years and many forums, I say that it's your build, do it how you want!
Getting closer folks, I've ordered myself a Christmas present to celebrate. More news soon!
Cheers, D!

Only a few days to go folks, who's ready?
I will create the Official Operation Thread based on my local time, so a day or so early for most of you, and keep it updated as required. I will also post links to your individual Build Log threads as you create them.
I have spent the past few days going over and over the new book. It is a superb read and well worth the investment, but I have roundly abused Nige for the lack of sleep it has caused! I will do a review shortly for the site.
As for my plan, I have my kits sorted:
and I will be putting together a diorama based loosely on this image from the new book
We have 15 enlisted at this stage. Hopefully a few more will join in along the journey, but 15 dedicated 56th FG P-47 build log threads will be a sight to behold!
Cheers, D

Okay time for a plea to my fellow modellers.
Does anyone know of any decal sets in 1/48 for Frank McCauley's mount "Rat Racer"?
I know that SkyModels included them in their set 48040 Republic P-47 Thunderbolt part 2 but its now long out of production.
If any one could point me in the right direction for an alternative or would be willing to part with the above decal sheet (or even just the decals I require) it would be appreciated.

I did some investigating by watching the film "Ramrod to Emden" which can be found here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_5ELQhzrPA
The events in the video are supposed to represent the raid to Emden on October 2nd, 1943, but I suspect that it was put together after the fact for these reasons:
1. Footage of 55th Fighter Group P-38 Lightnings taking off and flying; the 55th FG did not begin flying operationally until the middle of October.
2. Captain Frank E. "Mac" McCauley having 6 kills. According to 56th FG combat reports, he claimed his 5th kill on October 14, 1943.
I found these aircraft in the video that have red borders around the insignia:
P-47C-2-RE 41-6261 UN:B "Bat out of Hell"
P-47C-5-RE 41-6325 UN:V "Lucky Little Devil"
P-47C-5-RE 41-6343 LM:W "Little Cookie" (2 kill marks)
P-47D-1-RE 42-7853 UN:R (Believe it or not, this is the very first P-47D!)
P-47D-1-RE 42-7896 UN:H
P-47D-1-RE 41-7938 LM:S or LM:S_ "Hairless Joe/Hewlett-Woodmere, Long Island" (4 kill marks) The man in the cockpit at 12:37 in the video doesn't resemble David C. Schilling and could only really be one other; Lt. James E. Fields, which would make the aircraft a hand-me-down and therefore LM:S_
P-47D-6-RE 42-74635 UN:D
P-47D-6-RE 42-74750 UN:L "Lady Jane" (2 kill marks)
This aircraft had the border evidently painted over with dark (blue?) paint:
P-47C-2-RE HV:Z 41-6271 "Rat Racer" (6 kill marks)
Based upon these conclusions, I'll make the conjecture that the 56th FG used red-bordered insignia at least into late October, and possibly began to get rid of them around that date, due to "Rat Racer".
The 4th FG received the order to overpaint the red borders in blue on November 4th 1943. Its almost certain then, that the other fighter groups in the 8th received the same order on the same day.

I know Gerry Johnson's P-47D-1 "In The Mood/Jackson County Michigan Fighter" (42-7877, HV:D) had them. Can anyone put a rough date on this picture?
Sept/October 1943 ish

Howdy,
Something all decal makers seem to forget when doing "Rat Racer, is the Disney dwarf character of "Happy" on the starboard side of the nose.
