Chris good work ! I like the aluminium in the wheel Wells, looks suitably grimy and I like the finish. It's all coming together nicely.

Chris,
Super progress. Nice job aligning the wings judging from the unevenness of the filler the wing roots.

I've been dreading trying those fabric belts and harnesses as there are dozens of little pieces. To tell the truth I'm leaning more in the way of using AM seats with them molded in, but only if they have sharp and crisp details and edges.

Good progress, Chris with some care it seams the kit goes quite good together for a short run kit and the seat belts came out very nice.

Thanks James the wells turned out pretty well and look the part. It would have been really hard to make them this detailed out of plastic.

Gazza thanks buddy it's going together well! The seat belts are really thin etch and look a million bucks!

Joel thanks for compliment on the wing root join! The seatbelts are pre-painted etch and beautifully thin I've yet to try the fabric belts though I've heard for realism you can't beat them. But they are fiddly as you literally have to make the belts with the buckles etc. The buckles from what I can tell are made from thicker etch and really look the part.

Hi Bernd I'm actually rather impressed with the kit it's gone together well and with little fuss. But it is currently languishing due to my working on the zero and Saetta. I'll be putting a coat of paint on her soon! I'm currently leaning towards the Finnish markings and camo as I think it'll look really smart and different from the usual Hurricane. (It was either that or the Regia Aeronautica)

Well, there's another lesson learned about pinning the rear stabilizers! I'll be stealing that for the TBD-1!

Great looking build!

BTW, did you notice the lower body have in the gunner's seat? That's one of your guys! I know his legs would be relaxed at the moment of death but no one is going to see them.

Keep 'em coming!

Hi Patrick and thanks! Yes I had seen the gunner half in place and it's looking good! I'm looking forward to the rest of your build.

Okay a little progress on the PCM Hurricane. I've got the top camo done and I'm going with the Finnish Airforce scheme as I like the colours and the yellow theater bands. I used Tamiya XF-58 Olive green for the olive green and Tamiya XF-69 NATO black for the black as it uses a dark green base and blends in well with the olive. I used Joel's advice and thinned it with a little Tamiya lacquer thinners to make the paint harder and to allow it to key into the plastic. Also I've got to mask the yellow theater bands and I want the paint to be as resilient as possible.

I'm going to use RlM65 as the blue as I think it'll probably match best and give a great contrast between upper and lower camo. Just not to sure as to who's edition of RLM65 i'm going to use.

Got the canopy masked and as of now it's got a coat of RAF interior green just need to spray the top camo over it then attach it. Still got the landing gear to assemble and paint but I won't do that till I've got everything painted.

Here a few progress pics.

Looking great Chris, excellent choice for the scheme. It makes a refreshing change from the typical RAF earth/green schemes. I love the look of the Hurricane airframe, more rugged than its Spitfire partner.

Looking forward to more progress.

Cheers, D

Hi Terri thanks for the compliment! Yes it's about time I made a return to this as I've just about finished the Zero and time marches on.

Hi Michael thanks! Yes the camo was free handed (I'm lazy) the Tamiya paints spray really well.

Cheers D! Yes the Hurricane is definitely more workman like than it's more famous cousin. It was easier to repair sturdier and an extremely stable gun platform all of which enabled it to be an excellent ground attack aircraft. A niche it carved for itself after the Battle of Britain.

Looking great! Nice choice of upper surface colors, looks good to me.

Funny, I found myself a bit weirded when seeing a model at that painting stage and reading about you pondering under surface colors. Guess it's just my usual habit of always painting Finnish WW2 schemes in the order of Eastern front bands > underside color > upper surface color(s).

Anyway, as for the light blue, RLM65 should be good. Just keep in mind variations between different manufacturers' takes on the shade. For example, I think Lifecolor's UA 124 (FS 35414) is a great shade straight from the bottle (thinned as needed, of course), but Xtracrylix's RLM65 is a darker and deeper color, which I think looks best when mixed 50/50 with the same manufacturer's RLM76.

I think this picture does a pretty good job of showing what to go for. Provided it shows up the same way on your monitor as mine, naturally.

Actually, in reality that light blue undersurface color called "DN color" was based on (or right out German RLM65 - can't remember which off the top of my head) RLM65, with the name coming from the registry code of the first aircraft type in FAF arsenal to feature RLM65: Dornier Do 17.

Eetu my thanks for the info! There are quite a few shades of blue on that Hurricane! And it's got metal wings whereas my variant is fabric. But I agree it does look like RLM65 I've got a Vallejo colour match but it doesn't look quite right so I think I'll see what else is available in my supply of paints. I quite like Humbrols version of it and to be honest seeing as it's an enamel will be quite resilient.

Some more progress to report I've got the bottom colour on the Hurricane and I've painted the yellow recognition markings. I've got to adjust the camo a bit to match up with the decals just an extension of the olive green near the fuselage band. But I'm pretty pleased with the results so far.

And here are the obligatory pics gentlemen!

I'm still progressing with the Hurricane I've got the decals on and it's a fairly simple scheme of national insignia in 6 places and the number 1 on the tail. There are no stencils to speak of as I believe when the aircraft was refurbished at the state aircraft factory the stencils that were there were over sprayed with the new camo scheme.

I've got the undercarriage on however the instructions were a bit vague on exactly how it all went together so consult your references for clarification. I've got the gear doors on they just need a coat of underside colour and then it's on to the wash and weathering.

Closer to getting her finished she's looking pretty good now but should look much better when I've applied the wash and weathering. Debating just what colour to use for the wash I'm leaning towards a burnt umber as it should show against the darker camo maybe lightened a bit with Payne's grey.

Chris,
Your Hurri looks great! Great job on the masks and theatre bands and wingtips. Should be a huge opportunity for weathering as the Finns got a lot of use from wjhat little they had.

Always nice to have a build which , doesn't require oodles of decals and days applying them all . Looking sharp Chris .
A black wash will be to stark . Your choice of a brown/grey will be perfect for the contrast , looking forward on seeing the results .

Looks great!

I can't believe this is the only real game in town for larger scale Hurricanes. It's overlooked as badly as the Hellcat.

Good on you - fighting the good fight to get one done.

Cheers Gaz! Yes the aircraft were well used but they were well looked after. So I'll add some wearing and some staining but I don't think I'll over do it. I've already got the wash on now to weather her up.

Terri thanks for dropping by and thanks for the encouragement. I agree with the wash but I had to add some white to it as the grey was still to dark for what I had in mind. It stands out well against the lighter colours appearing quite dark but looks really rather light in the darker areas so I guess that's a win?

Cheers Matt thanks for dropping by and adding your encouragement. The only other games that I know of are the venerable old Revell kit and the new Fly kit which is a multimedia affair much like the Pacific Coast Models one. While I've seen the sprues and resin for the fly kit online I've not seen them in person and with all of the extra goodies you get (masks etc) I'm sure it's not a cheap option. But the sprues do look good!

Okay here a few pics of the wash applied.

Can someone please steer me toward a good tutorial on washes, the proper paints, etc.? I usually build cars and never do a wash on them...

Thank you in advance.

Hi Gaz thanks buddy, I'm really rather pleased with the wash it's perhaps a tad light but it needed to be to stand out against the darker camo.

Michael thanks, a wash was rather essential to making the detail pop on this colour scheme. Just some weathering to do now and I'll call her done. Just need to decide just how much to weather it.

Patrick I've watched and read a few tutorials but it's mostly been trial and error to see what works for me personally. But try this link and take a look at this thread it should give you a starting point.
