Eduard Albatros D.III Early Version #8017

I know that it is discontinued, but that is all.

I looked this kit up in the review section, but did not find it. Maybe Im dislexic, I just purchased this kit and would like to know a little about it. If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated.

Howdy,

Here's a little info for you:

http://wwi-cookup.com/albatros/diii/kitreview_eddiii.html

https://hangar47.com/albatros-d-iii-preview/

You will have to get after market wheels, should you decide to build one, the kit ones are too small.

Brian, thanks for those links.

I have another question re: the Albatros radiator and plumbing. The kit instructions are not as clear or just omit this in their assembly order. I saw on the box that there were two pipes running from the front of the engine to the radiator in the top wing and one from the back of the engine to the radiator.

I have been searching online for some help, but cannot find any. Can anyone help me with the radiator pipe layout on an Albatros D.III.

Hi Bob,

On the Albatros DIII, I think you'll find it's one pipe from the front of the engine (from the front end of the rocker box, where the air pump resides to be more exact) The back radiator pipe connects to the back of the engine. On the Merc 160 hp engine(which I think is appropriate to the early Albatros) it connects to a point above the magnetos. On later Merc DIIIa engines it connects to a point underneath the back end of the engine, where a water pump is installed.

If you see two pipes form the front, in the instructions I think this is because the Albatros DIII changed the position of the radiator from center to offset, which I think could be an option in the Eduard kit instructions (Been a very long time since I built that particular kit.) The earliest DIII had a center Rad, but this proved a bad idea, as when punctured, the pilot was scalded in hot water.

If it seems this way on the box-top, your
are probably looking at a pipe and a strut, not two pipes.

Good luck
/Mikael

Howdy,

Here's a build of the Eduard kit that might help.

Mikael, thanks for your description, it helps.

Brian, the link not only shows the two radiator pipes and where they originate it also shows some rigging that I was unsure of. Thanks.

The bottom line on all this is:

1. the radiator was changed from the center of the top wing to next to the right cabane strut. You have the Alb. with the center radiator if your have the earlier Alb. DIII.

2. The plumbing from the engine is shorter because the radiator is closer to the engine. This should be shown in the instructions, but can easily be found because the pipe parts are shorter. Look for pictures of Richtofen's Albatros DIII look at the planes with the center radiator.

Enjoy the model it is nice.

Here is the center location plumbing.

Here is the offset location plumbing. Its harde to see the scond rear pipe as its behine the cabane strut.

By the way when hanging the lower wings brass pins are adviseable to replace the plastic stubs.
