Liking the looks of things so far! Meanwhile, I'm running out of excuses not to start rigging:

so...eventually settled on colours for the wings - CDL underside is Tamiya XF55, PC10 upper is mostly Tamiya X62 with a bit of X2 and a smidge of X3. looks right to me

got lower wing painted, decalled and shaded, all good there.

Upper wing was going well until I caught a decal with a bit of masking tape and took a bit off. Removed remains of decal and will now obtain spare from Eduard. Dohh!
Oh well, plenty to get on with.

cheers

Hi Stu,
Those wings look really good. A quick fix on the decal might be to add a small piece of cdl painted decal to represent a patched up tear or bullet hole. Might add a little character.
I've got photos of Richtoffens red Albatros with bullet holes in the fuselage, patched over with filler. I plan on replicating when I finally get around to it.
On the bench: 1/72 Mosquito, Lightning F.6, DH.2,
AMT Vulcan Shuttle Surak.
Cyber-Hobby 1:35 Sherman Firefly IC - still stalled.

I was going to hold off with the final photos, as Aeroscale might be publishing a build/review I wrote about the 1/72 Eduard Dr.1 kit. But I'm not sure when that will be. So here it is.

You do need to post directly to
the campaign gallery. It will pick up your pics from your hard drive when you tell it where.
Nice work!

Long time modeller. Starting when I was a teenager, then I found out about girls and college and work and kids. But now that I have one girl, no school, no work and the kids are grown, I'm back to full time modelling. My prime area of interest is armor, b

Beautiful Tom.
That's 2 for Lt. Raban!
How did you get your masking so crisp? Amazing.

I used tamiya's curving masking tape and panzer putty.

So, Eduard were unable to supply replacement decals owing to the age of the kit, so I plumped for the decals from the latest F2B release. Eduard were brilliant about all this. the only problem is that the blue in the decals is much lighter than the original, which is both a shame and a complication. I remove the decals I had already applied and laid down a new one as a tester. Still very vivid, so removed earlier wing top roundel. Any remaining bits of decal show through the white portions so now need to respray upper wing and rudder to be sure. I'll leave the lower wing roundels as they are. This is turning into a saga!

Grained the wing struts as therapy.

That Pfalz has turned out lovely Tom.

So, its been a while! I couldn't get on with the new decal shades but thought I could tone them down with a light overspray. However, I couldn't remove every trace of the older decals that now needed replacing, and of course bits showed through. In the end I cut my losses and stripped everything. One coat of Tamiya grey primer and I was back where I had started

I didn't fancy shelling out for even more decals so I knocked up some masks and proceeded to make the F2B into a machine captured by the Germans some time later in the war.

Its a bit of a wiffer but is based on the few photo refs of actual aircraft I could find.
Job done.

cheers

The fit is very tight, so took some effort and little bit of filler. The picture doesn't show it, but the Pfalz has very nice smooth and aerodynamic shape.

I just love these WW1 aircraft and watching them being built. I have a number of WNW kits but have been scared of by the rigging. Mebbee I can find a kit with very little rigging to start with . . .

Paul, the beloved Fokker Dr.1 triplane only has 4 lines to rig, if you ignore the tail control wires. Give it a try; it's not so bad. Just take your time. Kit building is not a race. ;-)

Thanks for the encouragement guys, most of this is just committing to trying something new. When I was a kid in the 60s I built one of the Impact Deperdussin monoplanes. I rigged it with sewing thread. It was crude but came out better than my paint job did.

There are a number of elastic riggings available now Paul. Uschi VanDerRosten and EZ Line both come to mind. Their elasticity makes it easy to make the lines taut, and harder to break accidentally.

Noticed a week ago that if I want finish this build, then I better start putting some effort on getting the model done. Lozenge decals:

G'day all.
Some incredible work going on in this thread, I'm really liking the early kites being built.
A little update in my

That engine is something special.
Meanwhile, getting ready for rigging:

I'll do landing gear later, because it'll probably be quite flexible and not having it on during rigging is safer. 3+ weeks to go, so should be ready on time.
I made a small (like 3 mm) mistake with placement of the "good luck symbol". It should be right where the pilot sits, now it's bit too far back but can't be moved.

As this campaign draws to a close, let's not forget why we chose to run it from 11/11 to 11/11. Today is, of course, the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Take a moment, at 11:00 if possible, to remember those who lost their lives, their health, their homes, their loved ones, and their peace in the cataclysm that shook Europe from 1914-1918.
