Welcome to the 2019 MiGs Campaign! This campaign is all about the aircraft from the famous design bureau of Mikoyan and Gurevich. The campaign will run from 1 August, 2019 through 1 March, 2020.

Start day is here at last! Thanks Michael for kicking it off.

I have a design for the ribbon based on a MiG logo that I have been kicking around. I'll see if I can get it up in the next few days for comment.

Hi everyone! I thought I would start my build thread before I get distracted on other builds. I am planning on building an Eduard 1/144 MiG-21MFN for this campaign. I have a few of these kits in my stash so I thought this would be the perfect motivation to start one. I am going with a Czech anniversary scheme using decals from JBR. Here's how it looks today:





My build will be slow for awhile as August is a busy month with travel, work and trying to finish another build that is in progress. Anyway, I'll post updates as I have them!

Mike - what a great start, the MiG-21 is certainly one of the most recognizable jets of all time. Welcome aboard!

I messed around off & on for the last couple of weeks trying to make the MiG logo into a recognizable ribbon. The problem was one of scale. What looked good at 500 pixels was a muddy mess at 50.

I gave up on the idea and decided on a simple side profile of the iconic MiG-15 in Russian red against a natural metal background. To my eyes, this ribbon is recognizable as a MiG even in the teensy size. Here they are in 500 & 50 pixels:





Comments? If this passes muster here I'll post it as the official logo in a day or two.

My compliments, your proposed logo looks great!

If I were to offer any suggestion, it would be about color. Do you think a deeper red rather than pink might be more compelling for the aircraft?

Anyway, if you were to change nothing about it at all, it would still be a first rate ribbon as it is now.

I've started the work on my 1/144 MiG-21 and I was quickly reminded on how little this model is! I decided to spruce it up a bit and add some PE to the build using the Eduard photoetch sheet. First up is the cockpit and I assembled it and added various teeny little PE parts to the relevant sections. Here's how it looks before I start to paint the cockpit:







Sorry for the dark photos, my aged small pocket camera has not been great on taking photos like these. Hopefully, I will be able to show more detail as it gets painted and assembled.

Methinks you might be right! I decided I would give myself a challenge for this build. While in the photos I posted above it is almost impossible to see the detail, to the eye it looks a bit better than the out of box cockpit. We'll see how it looks after painting!

Here's my entry:



I'll pass the fancy colour schemes and use one of the "standard" schemes. Not sure if this will be all grey Soviet or four colour Czech plane. A 120 page photo book was included with the model, so I'd probably have better reference material for the latter.

I've been making some progress on my MiG-21MF build recently. I now have the cockpit pretty much completed and I am ready to seal up the fuselage. I have played around a bit with my point & shoot camera and managed to get some better photos this time around. Here's the progress so far:









I am not sure if the Eduard MiG-21 is a tail sitter so I added a bit of lead right in front of the instrument panel. I also added some Liquid Gravity weights inside the nose cone but this is so small, I am not sure it would have any effect.

I’m going to try a different strategy with this campaign. I rarely finish on time, usually because my interest wanes and I work on a different kit. I have a dozen or so on the go at any time. This time I’m going to work on kits that still fit the campaign and whatever gets finished on time is my entry! 😊
That said, the Mig-31 is coming along, but of course I had to start something else. I’ll be working ina Tamiya Mig-15 as well with a Neomega cockpit.

Here's a little more progress on my 1/144 MiG-21. Fuselage and wings are together so it actually looks like a plane at this point. After some clean-up (including removing the fingerprint impression under the cockpit ), it will get an initial coat of primer to see if there are any remaining gaps before moving on.





That is a regular small bottle of Tamiya glue that is serving as a stand for these photos!

Here's my entry, wish me luck with this kit.

I've made some progress on this kit. Lots of fitting, sanding adjusting. The cockpit is terrible.

Dang, I am easily distracted when I am trying to complete a build. While working on cleaning up the MiG-21 fuselage, I decided to add some of the PE parts from the Eduard aftermarket PE sheet to dress up the model. Here are the parts before priming:





What you see are an exhaust cover and nose cover, some uinlet screens, an oil drip pan, the nose shock cone converted to an inlet cover using a separate PE piece, wheel chocks and a boarding ladder. I figured these parts were on the PE sheet so why not?

The Eduard set contains instrument panel and seatbelts.
