Landing gear in place...


...a notoriously troublesome operation on FW 190-models. I've built a few from different manufacturers and I think this one was the easiest yet!

We don't have such a word in german for that, Magnus. I would translate deserty with "wüstenähnlich" or "wüstenartig". But in any case your Hundredninety looks really good!

Torsten! Whenever I practice my "German" nowadays, there is always someone calling my bluff ! I haven't studied German but that has never stopped me from trying !

Anyway, almost there...


Bomb in place and a pair of ersatz (sorry, I just can't stop ) cannon made from Albion telescoping tubing.

Same with my "Holiday Swedish", "Holiday Finnish". "Holiday Latvian", "Holiday Estonian", etc .... Most words are forgotten within some weeks or months. Though I love to hear and (at least try to) speak other languages.

Quite a big bomb at the ETC (Elektrischer Träger Cylinder - old german). When I built my SG 4 F-8 some years ago I have used 4 x 50 kg bombs under the wings.

Torsten! The main problem with my German isn't forgetting the words, it's that I INVENT them ! Thanks for not taking offence ! That bomb on my FW is the biggest it could fly with as far as I know. I don't think it flew very far (or very well) with one of these, I have even shortened the gear oleos a bit to modify the sit of the aircraft.

It took a few days but now it's done! I found weathering quite difficult on this one, they look fairly clean in photos and my attempt at the exhaust stains is a lot more than it was in reality. I don't get it, did the BMW burn cleaner or was it aerodynamics that kept the stains away from the surfaces, I assume they ran all engines on the same quality fuel? Also, it looks sharper in the photos than in reality (in a bad way, meaning I prefer the photos to the real thing), the overspray from my camo work is bordering to disturbing. Anyway, I have more of these and I really would like to do a muddy one in a battered winter scheme testing hairspray for the first time on a model so there might be a return match soon !

Model-wise it is absolutely excellent with a near-perfect fit, loads of detail and still a simple build!

Neil! There is a trick!


Start by gluing the "extra struts" into the gear wells. The middle "knuckle" of these has a flat surface that fits nicely against the rear wall making alignment easy (but an eyeball check won't hurt anyway ). Leave overnight!

When gluing the main gear legs, you'll have two fairly solid points of contact with the airframe: the end of the strut that goes into a "pocket" in the upper wing half and a support point a bit further down the leg.

I just happened to stumble over it, no intelligence whatsoever involved (as usual ) but it will come in handy in future builds!
