I'm thinking about doing my phantom in the phantom campaign that is upcoming. I don't know much about jets - it would be my first model of one - so I was doing some reading and came across some info about Robin Olds and his planes in WW2 and Vietnam. I thought wouldn't it be interesting to do his P-38 and his F-4 Phantom? And then I thought, I wonder if it would be interesting to do a group build where everyone built two different planes, of different types, flown by the same pilot. Would work in WW1, WW2 and perhaps even later.

It's just an idea at this point, but would folks be interested in that?

I would know a few more guys, who flew in a war and later in the Air Force again:
Erich Hartmann - Bf 109 and Canadair Sabre
Gerhard Barkhorn - Bf 109 and F-84 F Thunderstreak and F-104 Starfighter
Lauri Pekuri (Finland) - Brewster (Buffalo), Bf 109 and MiG 21
Teruhiko Kobayashi (Japan) - Ki-61 Hien and T-33 Shooting Star

And so on, and so on. Many guys who couldn't get enough of flying .... What would become difficult is to get the machines of them together with their markings ....

I think going across eras would be a big bonus (different planes in different eras) but just someone like Richtofen who flew an early Albatros and a late Albatros would be fine.

WW1 would be interesting in having guys who started out in early observation planes before becoming fighter pilots.

And I agree on the difficulty of getting the markings.

Plenty of options with a lot of the F-105 honchos in Vietnam who had experience in WW2 and/or Korea, namely Cols. Bud Anderson, Bob White, Robert Scott and Paul Douglas, just to name a few.

Another great choice would be Eric 'Winkle' Brown. There wasn't much he didn't get a chance to fly in his career!

Finding specific markings however might be a tricky.

At one point I planned to do six models: Hartmann, Johnson, and Gabreski's planes from WWII and then each of their F-86s. At one point...

Still, lots of choices here, so I'd be up for this.

Don’t forget George Laven, who flew P38s in the Pacific and was the highest scoring locomotive “strafer” in that theater, and later flew the most colorful US F104 to ever grace the skies. And how about John Glenn who flew a variety of aircraft, in addition to a Mercury capsule. In fact there are several astronauts who flew other aircraft. Now that would make for some interesting entries.

So folks seem to get the idea.

I think we should probably allow folks who have one plane done to add one to it from the same pilot? Still 12 months for folks who are doing two planes.

So who is in for something like this?

Sounds challenging, but I think I found two kits from my stash that would fit the rules: Bf 109 E-7 and G-6 flown by Ludwig Franzisket.

What I'd really like to build is GeeBee R-1 flown by Jimmy Doolittle (in stash), and the obvious B-25. If this campaign becomes reality, then I'll try to find Mitchell kit with proper markings. So I'm in.

Hi All,

I'm up for this one as I'm already doing it with Don Gentile, I was also able to find decals for Chuck Yeager's P-51, and have the X-1. So count me there!

I don't know of a complete list but hope to add some here over time. I came across this one the other day and found it interesting. Doing a wildcat and a corsair might be fun. Plus, it might be possible to find other planes some of these guys flew, perhaps a jet even? I think for some of the famous ones it might not be too hard to find markings for two different planes. I think I've seen models of Marion Carl's Wildcat and Corsair, for example.

Another very nice pair might be Boyington's Curtis Hawk from the AVG - and I see a very nicely done model of it elsewhere on the forum - and one of his Marine corsairs.

I am interested. Gabreski's P-47 and F-86; Theo Osterkamp was an ace in WWI and WWII. Then there is Black Sheep Ace, mercenary, and bank robber Chris Magee...
