Did they paint the A6M5b in the white scheme too?

The instrument panel is finished and i'm now painting the rest of the cockpit.
I'll post pictures soon

Looks good Fabian. As for a white sheme, I really don't know, but think they were usually a greenish? I look forward to more of your progress.

Your progress looks Fabian. I look forward to more...

I have a little bit to share. I have painted the main color, tried to fade it a little (doesn't really show at all in the pictures, so will probably be lost after gloss / flats). I am trying to mask and paint the major markings, so I still need to do tail markings and home defense markings on fuselage. I am trying to play with chipping as I go (have completed left fuselage cockpit and forward and left wing) and then will try to deaden the silver a little with some post shading which I'll also do on all panel lines. Not sure how it will come out, but I'm having fun playing.

Anyway, 2 pictures... In the first one, I did a very quick couple passes of post shading in photoshop to just give an idea or what I hope the front left fuselage and wing might end up like. The second is as is...

Hope all is well.

A little more progress...

White / red masking and painting completed. I think I just have to mask and paint the yellow on the leading edge of the wings, decide if I am happy with the chipping, and then do some small quick things, and I should be ready to put on the gloss for the couple of decals and wash. Finally, the end is in site...

BTW, the cowling is just sitting there; it will be more cleanly connected eventually.

Hope all is well.
Leon

That looks great !!
My progress isn't interesting enough to post pics -- still building.
I'm going to do chipping with humbrol maskol (smells like hell)
I have to join the wings to the fuselage now. Going to start painting the engine this evening

Hi guys,
No, I'm not KIA, but I have been putting in way too many hours at work and have only been able to do a little bit of building here and there. I don't have any update pictures yet, but the only thing that remains to be done on my P-38 is a few decals and a finish coat.
Fabian, your cockpit looks great. I'm sure your finished plane will be a beauty! Keep up the great work.
Leon, the weathering and chipping on your Frank look outstanding even without the photo-shop. I have the same plane in my stash and I can't wait until I get time to start my own.

As for who will shoot down who.......
Well, most of my progress so far has been done in 30 minute intervals around 1:00 am......once or twice a week. So, I predict that neither one of you guys will have to actually fire a shot to bring me down. My poor little P-38 will probably fall from the sky due to faulty workmanship. :-)

Another update, not big stuff just the progress of the build

What color do you suggest for a droptank to go with a white zero? I'm not sure if i'm going to use it, but i just want to practice chipping with maskol on it.

greets,
Fabian

Fabian,
I have seen Japanese drop tanks painted and also in NMF but there are other people here who would know more about that than me. My idea would be to paint the tank NMF, put on your maskol, and then paint white over that. Should look pretty good when you remove the maskol and reveal the silver chipping.

I already painted the NMF , but I wanted something different than white, to create some contrast and make the model more vivid
The metal color i used is also quite light, so I don't think the chips will come out very good.

but thanks for your suggestion

Edit: I'm going to add a little detail to the engine by adding the ignition cables
maybe pics of it tomorrow

Parts look good Fabian. I have to agree with Hermon in the guess that a white zero would have a white drop tank, but, hey, make it whatever color you want...

I'll decide tomorrow when I'm going to paint it

The snail-like pace continues...

Yellow painted. Engine and prop done - temporarily installed, due to need to take off cowling to add exhausts later.

I think I am going to put this on a dirt / grass base with a pilot figure if I can do an ok job of painting him. Here is the pilot; he is from the tamiya frank kit.

Next step future - I think I might finally have the stuff figured out (please, please, please...)

Hope all is well.

I'm progressing very slowly too, I'm also busy with another model. But I will be ready before the deadline!

A little more...

The pilot and base are done. My first pilot and base of this type. As a first run I know there are things that could be improved, but I am pretty happy with how it came out. The pilot was a lot of fun and for the first time ever I brush painted without brush strokes showing up all over (this was thanks to a figure painting tutorial by john17).

Anyway, for what its worth....
Leon

(I hope to finish this build in the next week or two )

Hi Leon!

Looks very good!

You did a fantastic job on the figure... only the eyes look a little too big. Maybe it's because of the pictures, I don't know... but the details are extraordinary! I don't know how you did such a clean paint job in such a small scale. Tell us more about this tutorial by john17. Do you have a link to share?
For a first you also did a great job on the base. I like it very much!

This is a great first step in the diorama world

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. Again, I know there are things to improve on, but as a baby step toward a future diorama, it was quite enjoyable and gave me motivation to keep trying figures

Jean-Luc,
I absolutely agree about the eyes. When you really look close at the actual figure (or photos) you can definitely see they are out of scale. I tried getting them right about 10 time - little paint, try to get it off, try again, repeat. Eventually, it looked like I was approaching the point where it was going to mess everything up, so I gave up and decided I'll practice more later on another figure. As for the links, I'll post them below. John17 PMed me the 3 to his 3 figure painting tutorial threads - great stuff. I really want to try to get a 1/35th figure to try what he shows with oils in the 3rd tutorial. Check it out; the illustrations in that 3rd one are great!

Thanks again for looking and the kind comments.
Leon

Ok, at long last, I am calling it done. Here is my Hasegawa 1/48 ki-84. I used an eduard pe set and scratch built a few other details. Major painting was done with tamiya paints. Most marking were painted on with the exception of the numbers and the 'bunny' on the cowling; those came from the tamiya ki-84 kit which I hope to do a quick inflight build of some time in the future. The pilot also came from the tamiya kit and again was painted with tamiya paints. The base is a cheap piece of pine from Michaels (local craft store) with dirt and railroad flocking white glued on. Overall a very fun build - quite a few struggles due to user error, but a fun build that I am happy with.

Hope you enjoy. and thanks for the duel...
Leon
