Finally as a change of heart I've decided that 1/144 scale is now allowed in the campaign (but maybe two or more)

Hi Allen, i'm one of those who have a 1/144 Tomcat kit to build.
I'm new to Aeroscale, this is my first post, this will be my first campaign and this will be my first Tomcat

If it's ok for you, count me in!

Hi Sarbas, Welcome to Aeroscale, I hope you like what you see and find this site a valuable resource for modelling (I know I do) Welcome to the Campaign and good luck with the Tomcat. Might be an idea to read some of the other participants comments and suggestions in this thread on the 1/144 Cats (especially if its the Dragon (ex Crown) Kit)

Update on my 1/72 Cat: The fuselage halves are together and the nose section and beaver tail are now attached. I didn't seem to have the same problems as Magnus though (I must have been lucky )Work has also started on the engine nacelles. Pictures to follow when I next have the camera is the same building as the kit.

I have bought a Hasegawa F-14D as well, I am curious if I can avoid all those little annoying mistakes I have made on my F-14A. My F-14A is from 1988 or 1989 and the nose thing feels like something Hasegawa might have adjusted in the moulds since then. I'll see when I start that one!

I'm too tired for a photo update right now, maybe tomorrow!

Wolfpack: I am following your posts with great interest. Good work!

Regards

Magnus

Hi, i started building my Tomcat.
Everyone who bought one of the new generation Revells in 1/144 scale is happy about the great details, cockpit details and the decals.

But this kit; Revell 1/144 F-14A Tomcat is a mess.
Unfortunately, It's an old kit(1988) full of flashes, thick decals, no cockpit details. And the worst part; poor fitting.

Imho; stay away from this kit!

'Evnin All!

Some update photos and a progress report.

With the spreader bar shown earlier, the nose section requires just a little filling and sanding to get an acceptable fit.

Adding the speed brakes requires some work to get them to fit properly as does the Boat tail itself. I must try adding each section seperately next time.

One major area that needs modifying, is the wing. The F14 has six hinges, the kit two???? If the flaps are to be dropped, they will interfere with the fuselage and so must be shortened by cutting the leading edge off at the first panel line and re-shaping to aerofoil section. Then the hinges above and below the wings can be added from card.

To make a 'Bombcat' from the Hasegawa kit, the armament and FLIR pod are needed. I took these from the Academy kit of the 'Bombcat' due to lack of suitable weapons sets. Funny thing though, I decided to use the Academy fuselage pallets and they fit better than the Hasegawa ones.........

That's about it for now, keep up the good work guys.

Sarbas, although and older kit it looks like your doing it justice and i can't wait to see it finished, I find (occasionally and que the Hovis bread tune) I like doing some older mouldings as it take me back to when i started modelling 15 years ago and it wasn't all about precision kit and the parts just dropping together

Some nice work there Ian i like the detail work in the wheel bays. What scale is the kit your doing 1/72nd or 1/48?

Hi all!

I wish It was true, but I´m not finished by far!
I´m well underway though, and here´s a small update of what I have done so far.

The cockpit Is done, I had to say "Enough is enough", or It would never be finished!

Here´s the front office;

...and the RIO´s workstation;

As you know, an aircraft Is something more then a cockpit!

Rear fuselage underside;

Rear fuse, top:

Back to the pit, both sections glued to the front wheel well top.

A perfect fit after some sanding on the parts.

This was only intended as a a dry-run, with the side walls fitted by Tamiya tape.
But the parts fitted so well that I glued everything as it already was in place!

Please feel free to comment and give me some feedback!

Cheers!

There is really not much more to say than good work Stefan! Building in 1/48 there is at least a chance that someone will see your handiwork! You have exactly one week to make IPMS Sweden Open next weekend...

Those resin parts are amazingly well detailed and you did a good job painting them.

Small project update on my 1/72 F-14A: Windscreen fitted, puttied, sanded, polished and masked. At least the side windows, the main windscreen will get a thin overspray of transparent blue before that one is masked as well. I used Bare Metal Chrome to mask this one.

With some luck the Tomcat will get to visit the paintshop this weekend.

Sorry, I was going on tomcat's Excel spreadsheet ( think the pics of your smaller tomcat might have thrown him and think he thought you had been doing a smaller one aswell).

I have finished constructing my 1/72 Hasegawa F-14 and has given it a light grey basecoat. A great kit and a real breeze after struggeling with my F-4 Phantom II from Italeri.
The only problem so far in the Hasegawa kit was some fit problems of the cockpit glazing.

I will post pictures later.

Sorry about the late reply Tomcat 31. It's the Hasegawa 1/48 kit. Makes me think Hasegawa is Japanese for 'arm wrestling'.

Hi all!

Here´s a short up-date on my build.

Actually I haven´t done very much the last week, but this is how It stands today;

I have added the coamings to the instrument panels;

Wing assembly Is done and the wings are screwed securely in place;

This Is a very sturdy assembly, that works perfectly!

Finally, I grafted the front fuselage section with the rear fuselage assembly;

This Is not a kitten, but a full-grown, able and dangerous Tomcat!

Cheers!

Looks really good with all the fantastic build progressing in this campaign.

Here are the promised pictures of my Tomcat with a basecoat. It is the Hasegawa 1/72 kit and it builds without any problems at all and is a much needed breeze after struggeling with my F4 Phantom from Italeri.

Hope to have time to give it the first white coat tomorrow.

Looking good so far, I have to admit my 32nd kit only ever got as far as the swing mechanism and then went back in the box. I will some day get round to finishing it now I have the Technics D conversion set (but i've got a 32nd Thunderbirds F-16 to finish first)

My update: The Easter Break has given me plenty of time to catch up. Hopefully my Cat will be ready for some painting (or had some) by the end of tomorrow. I'll post some pics if i remember to take my camera

Happy Easter all.

A couple of updates for you folks.

Jet pipes from the kit after some hard filing to get the sections to fit. Painted silver and black then the silver polished with 'Rub 'n Buff' with the after sections given some gunmetal pastels to bring the hot metallic look out.

For the Bombcat, I've raided the Academy kit for the weapons, these are the stores so far.

And just to brighten everyone's day, the easter bunny delivered this.........

Just a quick update from me (no pics though) I think I jinxed it when I said that I've had no problems with my 1/72 Hasegawa kit. After struggling over the weekend and the last few nights I have finally managed to straighten the badly warped wings that seemed to curve upwards from the middle of the wing to the tip. All I can say is I'm glad I have separate Hot and Cold taps and not a mixer tap Hopefully i can now get back to the final touches of the build and get it primed over the weekend (once I've bought some more)

Hi all,

I'm not a participant in this campaign but have been watching you all do some incredible work. I thought I'd take the liberty and add these links to youtube showing a couple F-14 clips breaking the sound barrier. Both are awesome. Again, great job guys
