I've started ma next built, a Me-410 hornisse from revell-monogram. In 1/48 of course. When oppening a box, the parts look good, dryfit is ok, but i've decided to add some more details to that excellent model. Of course, it has it's flaws (engine
gondoles, air scoops etc), but it's hard to tell when everything is completed. Here are the parts i will be using:

Eduardo PE set..

Aires wheelbay...

I started off with riveting the entire fuselage and wings portions, and I cut off the plastic parts were the Aires wheelbays were later installed with no problems. I also did some setailing in the radiators section, i opened the cooler's flaps at the top potrions of the wings and I filled the gaps with styrene.

Hi gregax

Looking good so far, but a few questions as i have another one in my stack:

1. What do you mean by wrong engine gondolas .. never heard of that (the 110 G kit has that) .. of course the supercharger intake is wrong and should be a circle instead of oval

2. I guess you know, but the wheel bay was closed on the ground (except for maintenance IIRC)

3. Why did you cut out the part for the wing cooler exit .. i always thought the upper part belonged to the wing and was not dropped ... will check my pix

4. Why didn't you cut out the leading edge slat --- it works the same as on the Bf 109 (or 110) and is pressed in as long as there is air flow and drops out when it is gone ?

Please understand that I do not want to critizise you, but I want to know for my next Me 410 build! BTW while I am no big fan of rivets .. yours look really nice!

best wishes

Steffen

1. I've read somewhere that the engine gondolas are shaped wrong, but who will know?

2. I know that wheelbays were mostly closed, but i just couldn't resist to add some more detail to this bird.

3. Radiator flaps were could open in both directions, I have some photos showing them in that position.

4. I didn't cut the leading edge slats as i believed that they worked like you said. But the plane is a tailsitter so i guess they slid back in.... :-)

I know you are not critising me. But than again, you should let me know if i make a mistake...

Hi gregax

thanks !

I just remembered another thing. Check your refs for the big train rivets on the elevators .. IIRC they have to be sanded ...

i am looking forward to your finished model!!

cheers

Try to find the Promodeller .. should be easier as the Revell is OOP for some time now. I have heard a certain company had ambitions to release the big gun version .. but have seen no evidence yet

cheers

Looks great so far. I have the Eduard ME410 in 1/72 so I will follow your build with interest. Especially what the experts find out on various details.

Thanks Steffen! The rivets are gone. I checked the references and you were right. No big rivets there!, Nov i need some drawings of the tail section... to see if there are some panel lines engraved.

Good to see an Me 410 in the making. One of the biggest problems with the Revell/Monogram/Promodeler 410s (and their kitsets in general) are the flimsy wingroots and wing-fuselage joins.

I solved this on a 410 I built a few years ago by making a spar out of a length of 'T' section Plastruct girder - it was easy enough to slide this through the fuselage between the cockpit components. I braced the wingroots with stubs of sprue.

I know the wing joints are a bit flimsy, but i think i could solve that by using epoxi glue and some sheet styrene. But i've manage to paint the cockpit.
Here it is. After a lot of handpainting, weashing, drybrushing, glueing those fiddly eduard bits etc, the cockpit is finally done. I just have to "compose" that into the fuselage...

Cockpit installed. It was pretty tricky to install this into the fuselage, as the tub isn't made of one piece, but three separate parts. But eventually i made it sit in there! I also added some wiring...

Next was masking the canopy parts. I masked them from the inside too, as the canopy frames are moulded at both sides and it would be visible if i didn't mask everything. I hope i will manage to glue them nicely together as the canopy is made from 5 parts...

Hi Gregax!

Looks very promising so far! The painting you've done is excellent. I also see you are shooting some nice build pictures... maybe for a feature on Aeroscale?

Model ready for paint. There was some small fit problems, some putty needed but nothing that would force me to put it on the shelf for a while. There are some small bits still missing, like pitot tube and the step handle, but i will add them at the end. For anyone who will build this model, note that the antenna post is not pointing straight up, but angled at 30 degress to the left, looking from the front of the Ac. I sorted that already.

Here is the shot of the small details, mostly from Eduard.

Hi Neil

As I have to keep my money together: In what respect is it better than the Mankau(Petrick) book ? .. which I think is really good (German Edition) the pix are a little small in some cases, but the text is first rate (IMO)

thanks!!!

best wishes

Very nice Gregax. Your cockpit detailing, painting and weathering looks fantastic. Your rivet detail looks very neat and straight. Looking forward to seeing this done, great job, Wingman out.

Ok, paint is finally done. I had some problems with some seams showing so i had to correct that before final layers of paint. I did some preshading and some postshading as well. today i might lay down a coat of gloss, then i have to cut templates i will use instead of decals. Comments welcome.
