Here is the opportunity to share aftermarket pieces that come for detailing WWI aviation builds. Since I have begun a thread on photoetch already let us talk about other media here.

First Turnbuckles. For my 1/48 scale builds I use several different sets usually in phortoetch sets. But for 3D pieces fir 1/48 scale builds I use 1/72 wire looped items from http://www.bobsbuckles.co.uk/ Its on Flashplayer so you will have to go to the "Gallery" section to view. But well worth the investment. I go with the smaller scale for 1/48 because I think its a better look.

Greetings all in keeping with the topic one here is a 1/48 aftermarket kit of the Austro Diamler 200hp inline six. This basic motor and its resulting upgrades were installed in many later war Austro - Hungarian single seat fighters and two seat reconn, bombers and observation aircraft.

Its good to hear from you. Nother biplane eh? For 1/32, I would recommend Bob's Buckles in 1/48 scale. I have tried both his buckle scales on my 1/48 scale builds. For me the 1/72 buckles looks better on 1/48 scale kits. The 1/48 buckles would be fine for the 1/32 kits in my opinion.

In fact,,while Ive been working away for the last 3 months my stash has become very biplane heavy,,Ive even ventured into the 1:48 kits,anticipating the extra space my new house will give me for building and displaying.
But that Revell Tiger Moth is a real must have!!

There are several good aftermarket kits of the 1/48 Mercedes D.IIIaü / av motors. Here is one such item from Pavala.

That’s correct, but this is just the way for us to just build slower in my mind. If I only could get able to do OOB, the stash off models would get smaller and the shelf in the glass display would be more interesting on the path. Is I wrong or I’m I on the right track here?
Building OOB, means to build the model the way the manufacture made it to be build in some ways. But the ever struggle for more skill off building makes us bending wires to give engines more details. We drill small holes for all these wires and sometimes it get’s real nice, often it makes the park just looking good but who can see the work when the plane is finished. We meet as always on the internet. I know, the world is just too big.

I really want to sit down with Brad Cancian and take a real good look on his models over a coupe off coffee/beer will do, Just to discuss who in the hell he das those frames without any warpings in the plastic.

All off those committed modellers who have struggled the last year with the Roden 32-scale build. It would be nice to gather all models from this build and just chat over them and enjoy all the great builds.
But in the end we still looking on the computer screens and envy the build’s with or without all details.
I must add to the letterhead on this thread.

I arrived/discovered the 1/32 Group Build far too late on to really contribute but have watched enviously as you all lavished details on these kits, gleaning idea's and details from the excellent coverage.

In the meanwhile I've plodded on out of sight with a couple of builds, the SE5a viper and Alb D1 mainly along with a couple of *coughs* tracked tin boxes :-P

Detail, you have to love it to do it, to take the pain, the humiliation, the frustration.....in the hope of conquering.

BTW anyone know where and what the finest honeycombed mesh is?

Here are those turnbuckles that make the devils in the details.

To my knowledge there’s just Bob Buckles who make these for the market. I’m always planning to get some from him, but still haven’t.

For me I’m still makes them in front off the TV. Here’s a pics off the tiny loops made from 0,015 wire twisted around a 0.20 wire.

On each model I have made about 20-30 loops. The need to feed the carpet, who’s ever that hungry.
After stretching the tube over a candle the tube itself often loses the shape off a tube, so I will every tube been cut to a 2mm length and I used airbrush needle I used to give the tube the shape again, I do this from both sides off the tiny tube.


A 10 cm long thread Gold-zack will have two tiny tubes each. The tubes is not glued until the rig is set on the plane. When the thread is secured from one loop to the other, I just push down the tube and glue them in place.

Notes the tubes just under the right tool.
When all is done just some paint to give the wires life.
So the beauty is in the details, yes, other guys have their ways to fix the riggings. This is I have do.
So the devil is in the details.

Yikes! I ordered the Vector 1/48 Mercedes D.III / D.IIIa kit on January 05 this year and it just arrived. . . Good grief folks! I guess they had to send it by mule from Russia at Vector to the UK at Neomega. Then It went by normal mail?

I will do a review and compare it to the Pavla version.

I also picked up another Vector 1/48 80hp LeRhône. While I have had several of these, they are getting used in that allied diorama I am building. I will try to get a quick review on these out.

I have the same problem, I ordered all of their 1/48 engines earlier this year and I'm still waiting.... The worst part is that they are not responding to my E-mails

Just bringing this up for those looking for some interesting details.

Karaya has released a fine resin 1:48 kit of the 11 cylinder Siemens Halske SH III rotary. This late war production engine was seen on production SSW D.III & IV , Pfalz D.VIII, Albatros D.XI 1st prototype and many experimental Siemens, Pfalz and Fokker prototypes of late 1917 through all of 1918.



Below is the Karaya 1:48 kit with the existing items it is replacing. At bottom left the resin Rosemont version at bottom right is the old Eduard item from their 1992 release of the SSW D.III.

Thanks for sharing this Stephen , was on their web site the other day getting info for a order for Mike , I didn't see them listed yet . Will have to get three of them , one for the eduard kit and the other two for Kosters .

i've got the 1/48 vector/nomega le rhone 110-120hp oberursel ur11 engine and it really is a work of art.
also off topic , if you like jets their cockpits are outstanding, i have a couple of those as well.
