A Model has announced the release of a new tool Martin JRM Mars flying boat in 1/72 scale
This will certainly need some space when completed and it’s certainly won’t be a cheap kit. A Model will be releasing two versions of this impressive aircraft. One will be in US Navy markings and the other as the well-known fire fighter Hawaii Mars.

The Martin JRM Mars was the largest Allied flying boat to enter production, although only seven were built. The United States Navy contracted the development of the XPB2M-1 Mars in 1938 as a long range ocean patrol flying boat, which later entered production as the JRM Mars long range transport. Four of the surviving aircraft were later converted for civilian use to firefighting water bombers. One example of the aircraft still remains in limited service based out of Sproat Lake just outside of Port Alberni, British Columbia.
The two versions to be released are:

A-72038 - Martin JRM-1 Mars US Navy - 1/72
A-72040 - Martin JRM-3 Hawaian Mars - 1/72

Expected release date June, 2017

Big is right. 1/144 would have been nice. But I guess I could hang it from the ceiling like the very old days. Now what kind of interest can a guy get on the bank loan to buy it. With a June release maybe I save enough . Dave

I'm holding out for this version:

Jess you might have missed the small photo on the right hand side. It's the Martin JRM-3 Hawaian Mars fire bomber one of the two options to be released.

Well that one ought to have been the header photo! They've been doing fire-fighting for 57 years, a far cry from the paltry 10 they spent in military service.

Wow! The ultimate pool toy! Mike

quite right. I am a bit relieved, or disapointed, or something, flabergasted maybe, that they did an absurdly large 72 scale kit - I compute 34 inch wingspan - instead of a 144 version , now that I have committed to build the much older (but no less challenging) 144 AirCraftModels kit of this aircraft.

I think I'll wait till someone releases it in 1/48th. Still, it's tempting.

I'm absolutely thrilled it's in 1/72-but am hoping it will be an all injection-molded kit. I definitely wouldn't mind paying more for for an all injection kit! I'm afraid I don't have the patience or modeling skills to work with a fiberglass-resin kit of this size!

The fibreglass/plastic Amonster kits aren't really that difficult. The materials require you to use Superglue or Epoxy to glue the major parts together, but beyond that, anyone with the skills to do a limited-run model can easily build one. Here's an Il-18 I did a few years ago.
