Czech Splinter #7701 – Camouflage Paint Masks for MiG-21 1/72nd
Re-usable die-cut camo mask set
The set includes two sheets of masks (shown in the picture). The masks are made from thin masking tape, which is easy to be peeled off and doesn’t leave any stains. The tape is tested on clear and painted model too. If carefully removed after painting, they can be used over and over again. Material is flexible and easily applied over curved surfaces. Semi-transparent for easy and accurate placing.
Czech Splinter camouflage was a demo scheme applied on a MiG-21MF. The Air Force number of the aircraft used was 7701. It was flown mostly at Air Shows by the Czech Air Force. That specific camouflage was made from several almost identical spots, which are spread all over the aircraft. In real life, the Czech Splinter was painted in stages. Each stage was consistent of a specific color, with the spots corresponding being masked off. Then the next color was applied. Because of that, the exact same method is to be used when painting your model with this mask set. That will help achieve maximum realism and color accuracy. Usually, when painting a model, starting with the lighter color is suggested. Because of the complexity of the scheme here, that might not be the best way to complete it. Therefore, you might pick darker color to start with.
Suggested kits:
Eduard 1/72 MiG-21 – #70141, #70142, #R0017, #2124
The original Czech Splinter project by DN Models was based on Eduard 48th scale MiG-21MF kit. Since Eduard MiG-21 kits are the most accurate on the market currently, 72nd scale kits from the company are best suitable for this mask set. However, the set will fit most 72nd scale MiG-21s on the market. Various modifications can be used: MiG-21M, MF and bis. If you want best results though, MF is the correct version for Czech Splinter 7701. Some of the kits available feature discrepancies with the actual aircraft, which might lead to discrepancies of the camouflage. Although the camouflage scheme is very complex, some of those discrepancies might be visible. Be sure to use the most accurate model in order to achieve best results. Reference photos of Czech Splinter are available online. Proper research will help you gather many of those, thus replicate the real MiG-21MF #7701 accurately.
Czech Splinter, or Czech Zebra as #7701 is popular, is one of the most attractive and famous demo camouflage schemes used on MiG-21. It is a complex project and require patience and devotion. In order to complete it accurately, choosing the proper paint colors is very important too. Be sure to trust your best judgement when picking up the colors and check with the reference photos for best results. There are no specific colors stated, so it is highly possible, that the original ones were mixed by the technicians when painting the jet. That makes the task with choosing the colors harder, but nonetheless – fun.
Mask set features all the spots and the insignia of MiG-21 #7701 Czech Splinter.
Fuel tanks and extra spots are included in the set.
Additional masking might be needed. Rearrangements of the spots is possible. Refer to pictures of the real aircraft.
Mask with caution!
