As the Phantom II is withdrawn from JASDF service there has been lots of special schemes celebrating its service. Hasegawa has re-released the quarter scale RF-4E Phantom II with the special paint scheme marking its final year of service with 501 Squadron

The JASDF's sole aerial reconnaissance unit, the 501st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, retired their RF-4Es and RF-4EJs on 9 March 2020.
