McDonnell Douglas Avenger II was a proposed replacement for the A-6 Intruder operated by the US Navy and Marines. The navy apparently ordered 620, the Marines 238 and the Air Force considered ordering 400 A-12 derivatives. It made it to the mock up stage before cancellation due to cost overruns, weight increases and technical issues. The cancellation and following litigation against the decision is thought to have tipped the demise of McDonnell Douglas and merger with Boeing. The mock up can be seen at Fort Worth Aviation Museum.
