SUMMARY
Highs: New tool with excellent panel lines and detail. Masks included for canopy.
Lows: Fixed flaps, but working tail rudder. Seated figure only.
Verdict: Another consistent quality kit from Tamiya. No amazing slide-molded bits but ease of build is self evident.

About Jim Starkweather (staff_Jim)
FROM: NEW HAMPSHIRE, UNITED STATES

I started building models in 1971 when I was 6. My first model was a 1/32 P-40 Warhawk. Revell I believe. From there I moved onto the standard cars, Apollo spacecraft, and other kid orientated kits. I don't know what got me started on Armor. I must have seen a Monogram tank kit one day and said "Mom...

Ohhhh, ooowwww...how I have awaited this day that Tamiya releases a 1/48 Ki-61. It'll look nice next to their 1/50 one.

Thanks for the review, Jim. Looks like a really nice kit and 3000 Yen isn't as expensive as we got used to for Tamiya kits recently. It's "only" about 25 Euros. But I will pass this kit anyway. I have built 2 Hasegawa Ki-61 already and another 2 in the stash. Should be enough for a lifetime I believe, except when someone is a Ki-61 freak. Oh, btw. to bring back your memory: the war ended in Europe on the 8. May and in the Pacific on the 14. August .... Torsten

It would be very nice to hear ( read ) about your impression about this kit when its there. This hard edged mottling looks like a real challenge.
FEB 02, 2017 - 12:51 PM
Bernd, the groundcrews used brushes or spray cans for the mottling, sometimes even palm leaves were used. Recently I've got some amazing photos of Ki-61 of the 244. Sentai from a swiss friend, where the mottling is clearly visible. So you're free to used whatever technic you like .... Torsten

Thanks for that hint, Torsten, now i need palm leaves in scale Major Kobayashis Ki-61 is well documented, i have some pics of it, the mottling was very distinctive, especially around the Hinomarus. Maybe this hard edges and the look of these green dots came from polishing the aircraft ?? Trying to capture this will be a challenge. Beside that, this kit looks tasty and it s not too expensive. Have a great weekend Bernd
