A Century of Aviation

by: Stephen T. Lawson [ JACKFLASH ]

A History
Aviation was in Hawaii long before the Wright brothers first flew their Wright Flyer airplane on Dec. 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Here is a list of events relating to aviation in Hawaii.

Burl Burlingame, former Star-Advertiser writer, now curator of the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor, has authored a well-researched and entertaining book about how aviation and Hawaii changed each other, starting with hot-air balloons over Kapiolani Park in the late 19th century through the islands' long history with military and commercial flight. With a bonanza of historic photos, this 143-page, pocket-sized book will easily fit into any carry-on bag.

This fine little book is divided up into short chapters that highlight specific years in Hawaiian aviation history. In his 30 plus years of writing the news in and around Hawaii Burl has gathered a massive amount of information on the islands. His personal passion is aviation and it is no wonder he is now employed as the curator of the PAM. We at the Vintage Aviation Museum in Colorado were able to pass on to him the contents of our files on the 6th Aero stationed at Ford Island. Burl is a long time member of IPMS and Aeroscale forums. His book presents rare Hawaiian aviation photographs with extraordinary stories of flight in his new book, "I'll Fly to Hawaii: A Century of Aviation." From the hot air balloon rides of the late 1800's to the Dole Derby of the 1920's, to the F-22 Raptors stationed there since 2010.

I was building Off topic jet age kits at the age of 7. I remember building my first WWI kit way back in 1964-5 at the age of 8-9. Hundreds of 1/72 scale Revell and Airfix kits later my eyes started to change and I wanted to do more detail. With the advent of DML / Dragon and Eduard I sold off my ...
