A-1J Skyraider

  • move
This is the 1:48 scale Tamiya A-1J Skyraider built almost out from the box (only the seat was reworked a little). Decals used are those included in the kit: 56th SOW (Special Operations Wing), 602nd SOS (Special Operations Squadron). For references, I have searched the website skyraider.org for original photos. The typical armament configuration is accurate and adequate like pictured in the instructions.
Paints from the new Revell Aquacolor brand were used but the shades are of my own mixes to match the FS colors of the SEA (South East Asia) scheme. Camouflage has been applied as follows: Tan FS30219, Olive Green FS34102 and Dark Green FS34079. The underside is black.
The fuselage bands have been masked with Tamiya or Kip tape using the kit's instructions as reference. Paper masks cut from the 1:48 scale plans included in the kit (excellent idea!) were used to reproduce the exact camouflage pattern. The paper was applied with Blu-Tack in order to achieve a slight blur while spraying the paint.
It is important to look at pictures of original aircraft to figure out the streamline flow of the engine's exhaust stains on the fuselage sides.
The kit is more than a decade old but is still very good and the overall moulding quality remains excellent. It is presented here on some of my own made diorama bases.

FROM: BAS-RHIN, FRANCE

I've been modelling aircraft for some years now, around 40 with some interuptions, and I'm just wondering about the broad offer of superb modelling stuf which exists today. My favorite areas are from WW2 to the 70s. I like to create scenes in various styles, including figurines, vehicles , equipment...

As I've told you earlier, that's really a fine built of the "Iron Beast", Marc! Congrats for that! Hope to see it live somewhere this year. Happy modelling Torsten

Marc, a superb job on the Skyraider! I've thought of building one myself someday, I hope it can approach the job you did on yours. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Russell

Hi Russell I would just encourage you to build one.The Tamiya kit is excellent out of the box and easy to assemble. The paint job requires some skills but nothing that the average modeller could not handle. It takes some time and patience to cut out masks conforming to the pattern and to aply them properly. The news we get from Tennessee at the moment are not so good due to Mississipi river waters beeing to high. Hope that everything is fine at the place you live. Marc
