Skin as White as Snow
Kana-chan’s skin is as white as snow, but I still needed to paint the fuselage gloss white. After painting my Trumpeter IL-76 Fire Bomber with Tamiya’s Racing White and getting a brownish off white, I decided to try Tamiya’s Pure White Spray paint. I planned on using the white background as the source for white on the “Art”. This way I could print the image on thinner clear decal paper rather than the thicker white decal paper. Due to the fact that I had painted the interior of the fuselage black, the seams were leaking black as well. White on white with black seams doesn’t work. I primed the entire aircraft with Tamiya Neutral Gray spray paint. Then, following the “Anything Goes School of Martial Model Car Painting” Secret Technique # 3056, I misted on an awful looking first coat of white paint. I allowed this to set for half an hour before following on with the wet coats for a truly deep shine in my paint job.The wings and horizontal tailplanes were sprayed with Tamiya’s IJN Gray. This gray looked close enough to the colors I see in the photos of Airbus aircraft wings. The Coroguard section of the wing was masked off with Tamiya Masking Tape and sprayed with Medium Sea Gray Tamiya Spray. The leading edges of the wings and tailplanes were hand brushed with Metallizer Magnesium then polished with SNJ Aluminum powder. Black demarcation stripes were added from the kit’s black decals strips. I also added a Hinomaru from a Platz Japan Airlines decal set. These parts were kept separate from the fuselage until after the final clear coat on the decals..
