The P-47 is really coming together nicely now Nige. I am looking forward to seeing this finished.
Regarding primer for Alclad paints, I always use Tamiya X1 Black acyrlics, and never had a problem so far.
This kit was painted in about a day with several different shades of Alclad over the Tamiya Black.

I dunno about painting a kit in a day!,,its taken me the best part of a week but finally I can put the Alclad away.
Various panels have been painted in different shades of Alclad. What I love about this stuff is that different shades refelect light in different ways and as you move the model around the NMF appearance changes.
Im taking a break from masking for the rest of the day now, and I'll probably work on the undercarriage and prop for a while now before tackling the blue ID stripes.

Here's a small NMF know-how advice from Jun Tumma:
"...Mr. Super Stainless was drybrushed lightly on Finishing Silver. This painting technique using airbrushing together with drybrushing is very effective for duplicating a weathered Natural Metal Finish."

Hi Lars.
Thanks
Plans at the moment, after decalling, are to give the airframe an oil wash and then Klear it again. Then I'll reverse mask and spray the decals and antiglare etc in matt varnish. Then I'll see how it looks. I may end up misting on some heavily thinned Tamiya Smoke to blend it all together.
Actually,this isnt even a snack(1:48),,its only a nibble,,its 1:72 scale!

Thanks guys.
Hi Jeff.
The Alclad itself is supposed to be dry (according to their website) in about 10 minutes, but I leave it at least 90 minutes before I touch it.
Naturally its not possible to spray both upper and lower surfaces at the same time. What I do is sit the model right way up, and spray the upper surfaces and as much of the sides as I can. After a couple of hours I turn the model over and spray the underside. I sit the model on a piece of kitchen towel so I can move the model around without actually touching it during this process.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again Nige.
Sorry about all the NOOB questions.
But as a lame excuse I have never used this here paint before.
I might be able to try mine soon.
Just need to fiddle these PE seat belts in after I glued the cockpit together.
Another lame question I bought a set of Resin Barrels but my LHS guy ordered a set for the {M version P-38 }these have like Muzzle deflectors on them safe to use or a No-No.
If I don't get an answer will make a separate post.

Hi Jeff.
The only dumb question is the one that isnt asked
Best of luck trying to get PE belts into an already assembled cockpit.I dont envy you there
Let me check my references about the resin barrels and get back to you. What version are you building?
Oh yeah,,,an update!
After two long masking sessions Ive finally finished spraying the ID stripes.
Next up will be a Klear coat and then its decalling time
Although these were supplied as decals in the AM set Im using they look so much better painted on I think.

Hi Jeff.
The P-38 M's were converted P-38 L's. As far as Im aware (my reference material on Lightnings is quite limited), the M model was the only one to be fitted with the muzzle fairings on the gun barrels. These were fitted to reduce glare when the guns were fired.
Dont take this as gospel though,as I may well be wrong on this.

Short update.
All the decals are finally on,which turned into a bit of a battle in itself but is finally over
While Im waiting for the coats of Klear to cure so I can start the oil washes Ive finished the undercarriage.Only additions here are some brake lines from black coated fine wire. Thankfully, thats the last of the extra wiring detail.

Getting close to finishing now.
Ive given everything a wash of Burnt Umber oils.Although Im pleased with the effect Im going to add another wash in selected areas just to bring the panel lines out a little bit more.

Progress has been slow the last few days as my attention has been taken up by a much larger P-47!
Last photo before finishing.
The past few days have been spent masking (more masking ) and matt varnishing the blue bands and anti glare strip. I added more wash also. I really like the way the burnt umber wash looks on the nmf. All the fiddly bits are now painted and hopefully I'll get these attached tomorrow and if the lights good I'll post some finished pics.

Hey Nige,
Your Thunderbolt keeps looking better and better
You must have really good and steady hands for the great work you do on such a small scale. I mean that sincerely !!
I see one thing you may not have thought of for adding to really complete your P-47. Hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of modifying one of your pictures to show you what I am talking about.
You forgot to add the ace pilot worrying if he is going to be ready for the next sortie.
Sorry ...but I looked at the picture of your plane and then just happened to glance at your pic and the idea came to me. The two pics just went together so nicely. I couldn't resist the temptation. All in fun
