Ok bit late to start a blog but I felt if I put this up it would get me working hard to finish it in time.

The kit is the Revell 1/48

I have the velinden update set for the kit. I will be using most of the parts. First bit's to use were the cockpit parts, seats, bombsite etc

Bit of a dark pic but this is the landing gear bay, painted by preshading then a coat of WEM RLM02, highlighted with 02 and then an ink wash over the top and matt coated.

Cutting the flaps out:

Making them, scary stuff for an etch virgin!!

It's now sat with all wings attached so just a few more jobs and we can get started on paint!! YAY

Hope you like so far.

Thank you very much guys

I started masking the canopies last night, phew what a job. Thankfully I have a set of Eduard masks for it!

More to come soon.

Morning,

Saturday night I started modelling and couldn't put the plane down, only realised it was time for sleep when I caught a glimpse of the clock saying 3am and even then I wanted to carry on!!

First thing was getting the engine nacelles all ready:

Shame you can't see the engines once the cooling fans are fitted in place.

I then built up the HS293, drop tank, pylons and main wheels. I also got all the canopies in place and started hanging the engines!!

Last thing last night she looked like a proper bomber!!

I hope to move onto painting in the coming days so back soon.

Thanks for reading.

Nice work. She really is a big beastie in 1:48. I used Eduard masks on my pencil too fit perfectly. Saved an age and a lot of worry.

Thanks Jaypee, your Dornier looks lovely. I hope mine will be as good.

Well I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't get it finished in time as I moved house over the weekend. The good thing is I now get my own modelling room instead of a space on the living room carpet!!

I managed to get a bit more done though.

Prop and spinner in RLM70 and RLM23 tips:

The first coat of actual paint on the underside. What a colour!!

I'll leave that to dry over a few days and start on the top side.

Good progress on this beautiful bomber, Howard. It looks really nice. Even though the engines cannot be seen, you know they are in there and look good.

Looking forward to see more

Thanks Jesper I'm really enjoying the build. Actually wish I wasn't at work today so I could do more to it.

I hope to have some of the top camo done over the weekend if all goes to plan.

Thanks for the reply.

Really feel like it's coming together now

Howard this is a beautiful build, thanks for sharing. What is your technique for the ink wash, it looks so much better than my dry brush.

Hi Robert.

Thank you very much for the compliment.

I got the main info about the ink wash from Wingman's excellent JU88 build here: https://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/forums/112517&page=1

Basically I get 1ml of Klear (future) and put 2 drops of ink in. I use Vallejo Game ink but I'm sure most types would be fine. I then mix it up good and using a flat brush just paint it on. Leave it to dry for half hour and matt coat it basically mate.

Hope that helps

No worries Robert

Ok so last night I was playing with Mal's Miracle masks.

Glossed the Dornier up, and then spant an age getting the masks on straight. It's brilliant you can pick the masks up soooooo many times until your happy

Finally happy and sprayed:

Horray!

Ok so I know theres still alot to do but I needed to practice with the easy ones first. These things are great!!

Hoping to start the codes tonight.

Hi Howard

Nice progress! colours look o.k. in these Pictures.

I have a strange feeling with the wing crosses, but they seem similar to those in the instructions ... but I better keep silent

cheers

Steffen

Looks great, Howard. The crosses came on very well although the bars of the crosses look a little thick for the top wings.

Can be the masks be reused or is it a one time use pr. mask?

Thanks guys.

The wing and fuselage crosses measure the same on the decal sheet so I got them the same on the masks. I think you probably could re-use the crosses if you kept them on the backing sheet. They were certainly still tacky when I removed them.

Steffen, Oh no!! I don't know if I dare ask what your strange feeling is!!

I'll admit I did wonder if they should actually have been black but the decal sheet says white so thats what I went for!

Hi Howard

I did not want to ruin your parade, but as Jesper I think the crosses are the wrong style. Just look at the instructions and compare them to what you did. They should be thinner ( I will not bore you with measures ... OTOH I can't because I have my Merrick not to hand)

here is again my over stressed Arado : see the crosses are about the same size but different style ( this is just to show the different style .. the crosses as such are smaller than those on the Do 217)

BTW White is perfectly o.k.

all the best

Ha ha oh well. I just went with the decal sheet measurements. They will have to do I think as the decals would be the same.

Hello howar

i would not change it. Maybe you chose the wrong stuff from Mals Masks or it is just the photos. Looking at the instructions:

below right the style is another tha that on your model .. the again the fuselage crosses look also thinner. I just say that to my eye it looks strange. So:

Don't worry, be happy!

cheers

I agree they do mate, on the decal sheet they both measure the same though which is why I went down that route.

I'm still happy with it, I just won't put it in any Luftwaffe competitions

P.S. I just did a "big dig" in my stash and luckily I have one of my Do217 here. You are correct those decals are the same size. As I am absolutely convinced that you can choose the proper masks from Mals set it is probably just a matter of photography, angles and my bad eyesight. It still looks wrong to me

Indeed

Not Mal's fault as I measured everything and asked him for the set to the measurements of the original decals.

Anyway we'll see how the underwing/pylon ones turn out. They are gonna be hard as hell!

Hi again

by far I did not want not accuse Mal !!

I did not know you had custom made masks .. but here we have a big possibility of error in your measurements. You should have tried to get the original dimensions and downscale them. Yeah, I know I can be a__l

greets

So now your saying I can't use a ruler????

I measured all four, they turned out to be the same I then ordered them to those measurements. I understand that the manufacturers don't always get decals right but this is good enough for me. I'm not a total rivet counter and finding a Dornier 217 is pretty difficult to find and measure as they are totally extinct sadly.

I am going to stop posting on this build now as I'm pretty sure one of the landing gear doors is 2 scale mm's out of place.

It looks fine to me, I'm happy with it can't you find someone else to pick on now.

Howard
