Uncanny you are, Captain!

Applying the finishing touches on three new additions so i'll be adding images shortly!

I have a feeling that the wait won't be much longer for the Wingnuts D.V and I have a very
good sense that the kit will be everything we had hoped for.!

Captain,

Here are a few images showing the progress of the latest three kits. Rigging, landing gear, props and some final odds and ends will do the trick.

I'll post more when they're done.

Love the "Bavarian". I am giving some serious consideration to doing that in 32nd scale. So be sure to post how you did the paint job. I have been throwing around the idea of doing Jasta 5 in 48th for about a year. Seeing your line got me into the numerous D.V boxes, again. Love 'em.

Captain,

I didn't paint the patterns on any of these models, I used decals from the
out-of-print Americal Gryphon series for Jasta 5. I wish I were that good!
There is some hand painting in there but I couldn't pull those patterns off
without mind-numbing masking and the like!

The lozenge is the coveted Eagle Strike 5 Color upper/lower pattern.

I have the same decal set and considered doing something similar. Don't forget the lone Pfalz! How are the Americal decals handling? And what are you using for the green tails and red trim?

Burl,

The decal film on the Americal sheets is a bit on the thick side. Thats good and bad. The benefit
comes with handling the large single fuselage decals for the Bavarian and Checkerboard patterns.
They will put up with quite a bit of pushing and pulling and did not easily tear. The downside is
the edges are prominent.

There are no individual carriers around the markings, its just one big carrier film so you will have
to score/cut the border of the markings yourself. I suggest you do this with a brand new blade in
a small exacto knife without the handle. The smaller knife will pivot easier than the one with the
gripped handle. Just carefully cut through the border film of each marking and then cut a larger
piece out of the sheet to place in the water. Once the glue starts to soften the excess decal film
can be peeled off the backing sheet.

Make sure you have a glossy surface for the decals and they should work fine. My set was not
destroyed by using solvaset but more than one application was used on several occasions to get
them to sit down tight around the surface detail.

The tails were done by painting them Humbrol #2 Green and the trim was hand painted using
Humbrol #19 Red with a 00 Liner brush. I thin the paint a bit to flow off the brush better so a
couple coats will be needed. Its not that difficult and does require one or two rounds of touch up
using both colors.

As far as the Pfalz is concerned, it didn't show up till later in 1917 and was not present at the very
famous July line-up that I'm attempting to portray.

Good Luck,
Dwayne

Great looking models Dwayne! I can appreciate the work and craftsmanship that goes into those. As I work with WWI subjects more, I have to say that I really like the color combinations of Jasta 5. What colors do you use for the upper wings? There is only one shop in my area that handles Humbrol paints. I do prefer them over Model Master.

Cheers

Burl,
Display room is a factor concerning the buildings. Project burn out is another. I've been working on this one over a year and I still have seven planes to go! Life and side projects have a nasty habit of getting in the way, especially in the summer with yard work and pool maintenance thrown in. I really want to dive into a Wingnuts kit so buildings may be a future consideration. Richthofen's triplane won't be making an appearance here but maybe in a future Jasta 11 project.

Mark,
Thanks for the kind words. I primarily paint with a brush so I prefer Humbrol over ModelMaster as well, although I use quite a bit of ModelMasters colors too. I find that the chemistry of the Humbrol paints allows them to flow off the brush more smoothly whereas the ModelMaster paints are much thicker and need thinners applied if working with a brush. Both lines use excellent pigments that are color fast, which means they won't fade prematurely, and are for the most part opaque after one coat.

The colors I use for the upper wing surfaces on the Albatros D.V types are Humbrol Green#30 and Humbrol Purple#68. For the Albatros D III types I use Humbrol Green#30(dark), Humbrol Green#78(light) and ModelMaster Italian Dark Brown #75611/21110. The undersides are Humbrol Blue#65 and for the Gray fuselages I use Humbrol Gray#64.

Also, be on the lookout for a new series of decals for Jasta 5 by a company called Pheon. There is a thread here at Aeroscale in the Early Aviation Forum about their products, maybe Stephen can help me out with a link here. I have purchased a couple of their sheets and intend on grabbing more. Rowan is producing some really amazing work over there and he is catering to our little niche here in a big way. His sheets are short run for the most part and a bit expensive compared to larger companies but the quality and service he provides are both outstanding and well worth the cost. I know I'll be picking up a set for myself of the Jasta 5 markings when they arrive.

Regards, Dwayne

Thanks Andy for the encouraging words, the Mrs sounds like a keeper! I love mine
dearly but she wouldn't have the slightest notion to look after what I'm building!
I'm just happy that she still has some notions about me!

By the way, I've a few Tigers and Panzer IV's hanging around as well.

Happy Holidays to all and a Happy New Year. I'm not making any new resolutions
because I'm still working on last years!

Regards, Dwayne

P.S. Just about finished with the latest three Albatros D.V's.

We are wondering. what will the next three offering from Dwayne include?

Temporary thread hi-jack. It looks like the Wingnut offering will include at least two greentails. Wouldn't it be nice to get a bunch of people together to model the line-up in 1/32 scale? Hi-jack over.

Captain,

I'll most likely complete the remaining D V's next and finish with the D III's. The rest are simpler finishes than this latest lot.
Speaking of which, here is the latest line up shots of nine completed models.

I just have to state here that this project could not have progressed to this point if were not for the hard work and efforts by Dr. G K Merrill. His two part series Jagdstaffel 5 published by Albatros Publications and the decals printed by Americal Gryphon are the references and materials that have made this possible.

Here are some shots of the latest additions.

Finally, this is my interpretation of the markings of Vfw Fritz Rumey's machine. It is actually a compromise between Dr Merrils and my own. I take full responsibility for the depiction and do not do so to cause any controversy, it's just what I think it looks like.

P.S. I think I'm gonna need a bigger table next time!

Thanks for the kind words folks, I think I'm coming around the final turn at this point, not quite down the final stretch though with seven more to go.

Bill, they are 1/48 scale.

Dwayne,

I've just joined up and I have to say you are insane!!! Who and what got you into doing the Jasta 5 1917 line-up? What are you thinking? Hahahahahahahaha........

Seriously, this is turning out to be a beautiful effort on your part and I truly appreciate all of the hard work, not to say anything of the time involved.

Great job, can't wait for the rest.

Russ
