Many thanks, Michal and Terri!

I see that Tamiya Jug is a good model for "relaxing modeling". Have you ever build Hasegawa Jug? I wonder about the comparison of these two Thuds...

i do have a Hasegawa P-47D in progress since years .. problem is/was not the kit itself, but that I had to add a few Aires sets to get it to Tamyia's oob standard .. and then it still is slim. (IIRC Tamiyas came out when I was in the middle of it) I will finish it one day as Dave Schillings LM*S (with the large Barbarian on the cowl) will be my 3rd donation P-47D-1 then. Still have to find some better decals as the kit stuff is very yellow (was already when I bought the box new from the dealer).

As for the colour. Well red + green = brown so I suspected OD would just turn a bit more towards brown (as it did) it was harder to cover the ZC ...

@Terri: yeah, my Tiffi is also calling me, but that crazy multi-CMK-set build will have to wait a bit

Steffen i used those PYN-UP decals on my P-51 build and they were really
nice decals. Its looking really good and im looking forward to trying that technique
on one of my builds.Have big one coming up for Seaplane Campaign.
So hopefully ill be able to integrate into my PBY-5A.

Nice going Steffen. I really like how the pre-shade came out. It looks like more work but the ends justify the means!!

many thanks Justin and Hermann!

I think this is a good technique for large uni-color paint schemes. If you have a model that has much structure you do not need it and if the paint scheme is multicolor you don't either. It is not that much more work, because you do not need to be careful .. just lay on some kind of pattern to break the monotony.

I am not sure if I should take another photo as not much happened though I still did not add the stencils but just larger decals .. o.k. one shot to show how "brilliantly" they designed the decals:

When I built my Tamiya P-47D the gap in the decal was there because the Bomb/gas tank holder went there. I guess if you are not going to use the under-wing bomb/gas tank holder then the gap will be a problem.

You can see the same theory in my build pic

Hi Kyle

We're talking about a decal set specifically designed for this machine. It has a colour photo included, that definitely shows not a sign of the bomb racks. PynUp (CED) just copied the Tamiya decals, but they forgot to include the long bars when the racks are not used. the problem is that these are of the early red bordered style else I would just used the tamiya decals .. hope that clears things up and in case I come over a bit rude it is because I am still pi###d about this (nothing to do with you or your post!)

@Terri yep ... see above

Now I see why you are grumpy today
Good save on the decals ( or did you just photoshop it? )
Not what you need in a motivation build. It is looking great though.
And I look forward to see the results of the modulation experiment once the flat coat is on.

Hi JP

Believe me, you do not know why I am grumpy .. it has nothing to do with modelling, but things add up to the prevailing mood.

The pic is gimped but I did not cheat! Just a bit of brightening and unsharp masking. The left insignia on the picture (which is the right wing lower side insignia) has to be reworked as the upper red border is too narrow ... luckily Gunze H3 matches insignia red of the decals pretty well ...

Still hundreds of stencils to add

Hi Steffen,

As a long time sufferer having to listen to Allen and Nige talking about P-47's I thought you should know that the bomb racks were removable so although your picture doesn't show the racks on it could quite possibly have had them installed at some point. If not then add them to cover the gap and call it artistic license

It's looking good so far but I'm not sure if its the angle of the photo, but your stars and bars on the underside looks crooked. The bar should be running parallel to the leading edge panel line. (just thought you should know before the P-47 "nuts" see it )

Hi Samantha

many thanks for your input!! In general I am not a big fan of the Thunderbolt, but this kit is really good for a motivation project.

I have completed the insignia (as in my last pic above) so it is no longer a problem but I still find it pretty stupid not to include the full insignia.

As for the angle: I think it is correct. This is a 3part decal, with the lower edge cut off where the ailerons are (as in the Tamiya kit) .. so the angle is pretty much set by the kit. I also think this was standard for these very large stars'n'bars .. also note there are 2 and not only left side.

Here we go again

still not much to show. I have completed the upper side, but still need to add a myriad of stencils. But the lady is complete and worth to take a pic:

these extra decals are super thin and easily roll and fold over. hope there is no air trapped under her right leg where I had slight problems .. well'see when the flat coat is due.

Hmm, interest has dropped significatly over the last few days.

O temporae, o mores! What shall we do when even nekkid women cannot attract the modelling crowd any more ..

I am still progressing, but I am waiting for some parts. I ordered Ultracast's wheels to add a little extra .. might be I'll have to check with german customs as i did order some bits for the next projects.

Decals are on. I added the u/c yesterday and also made a small steel drop tank fit (more or less) .. now I need the wheels to make a good photo else it sits on the drop tank.

all the best

I think the modelling crowd is sitting in stunned silence with jaws agape staring at the "nekkid woman", unable to raise a finger to type, waiting for her to move.

Looking real good mate (the build, AND the aforementioned woman), I hope it is having the desired motivation-building effect.

thanks Damian

Maybe my own fault, as the pic does not show her really good ... OTOH the new photo again does not really show how the decal looks because you do not see the fine details as the white just kills all of the fine structures .. I played a bit with the colourse but to no avail (it is a bit too red now)

What you see is that I could not place the decal really centered. I am not sure where the mistake is because I tried really hard but either I got a white line above or below. To me it looked better on the lower side and i will rework it a bit when the flat coat is on. You can also see where the decal had folded over and lost some detail in the recovery process at the feet (these are really fragile) ... and there is soooo much dust .... horrible

Awesome, Steffen! A lot of hard work and some innovative preshading that gives you outstanding results and effects. Great build-I'm drooling and thinking how I can use the new ideas you've given me.

Hi Steffen

I'm playing catch-up on your build. It's looking great! Easy to miss with the distraction of the tinted shading, I really like your way of dealing with ejector pin marks. Stretched sprue - so obvious, but I never thought of it! The perfect way to get the exact match for the size of the pin.

That's a technique I'll definitely "borrow"!

Yes, that's what I said to myself too. It would have been usefull for the new Tamiya Spitfire...

Thanks for watching, Rowan and Jean-Luc!

Again, this is not my idea, but I snapped it up somewhere.

J-L yeah that pin marks are annoying and sadly they are not always in modeller friendly places .. I remember the one on their beautiful F-16 .. directly on the nose wheel. Still I think this Spit is probably the best model kit to date (speaking of the kit and less of the model .. I am sure some guys find it fatally flawed .. just watch HS Plane Talking yesterday)

Hi all

yesterday i applied my usual wash. I used oils for that . the lower side got a mix of a grey (looks similar to RLM 02 in the tube) and van dyk brow with a little black (thinned with Testors thinner). the upper side go more black (much more) and sienna for a reddish hue. Actualy I have problems getting the effect fotographed. While you can make it out on the lower side,, the upper looks almost plain --- also the panel shading which is very visible in person is totally killed on the photo .. but what the heck, I rather have it nice when I look at the model than on any photo.

I also grabbed a small drop tank from a Hasegawa P-51 kit and crafted the drop tank mount on it. I still need the wheels to find its final position .. if anyone has a photo how this was mounted, that would be very helpful (on the pic in the instructions a crew member obscures half of it) especially how it should be angled. On this pic the filler cap stands proud (to my eye) so I glued on a disk of plastic sheet and painted it red.

comments welcome

Excellent so far Steffen !

I know what you mean about the pic's . Some effects look better when viewed with the naked eye then seeing it in a photo . I guess it's a lot like vinyl records , just something about the sound that a CD will never be able to capture .

Hope your wheels show up in the mail soon !

Thanks Terri!

As for vinyl .. I like CD's even if it looses data over time. Still it also has a lot to do with the data put on them. i have a Jean-Michel Jarre CD (my favorite) that is almost 20 years old and sounds better than every other I bought later .. guess it is because of the recording (but it is loosing data like hell, need to rebuy it one day or try to get a record).

Hoped to get my Ultracast shipment today, but nothing showed up yet

all the best
