Hi Des:

That engine is a masterpiece in miniature. A delight to look at with the subtle shading and washes.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Here are three photos of the completed Hisso engine. I replaced all the plastic pipes from the bottom of the engine and used copper wire and brass tube. Once the engine is installed in the fuselage I will add fuel lines, throttle linkages and electrical wiring. I like building my models with ä "straight from the factory" look so I will not be weathering the engine.

Des.

It is a real beauty, Des!
The "Black" on the cylinders is a little too dark to me, but maybe it is just a problem of the pics or on my PC.
I'll check yor site for more pics!
great work!

The first photo shows the Pheon resin replacement fin which I have fitted. It has very nice crisp detail as does the rudder which comes with the fin. I removed the original fin with a razor saw then fixed the Pheon fin with CA.

The second photo shows the radiator, instead of using brass coloured paint I decided to fix very thin brass sheet, it was fixed to the radiator with CA. The new filler pipe was turned from a piece of 2.5mm brazing rod, also fixed with CA.

Hi Des:

Radiator looks good witht he real brass. Somehow gold paint just doesn't do it. Are you going to coat it with something to prevent it from tarnishing? Looking forward to seeing how this will look with that great engine displayed, the radiator will only enhance the appearance.

Another progress up-date of the 5a.
Painting is just about completed, decals are fitted and the entire plane has been clear coated. The decals are from Pheon Models, very thin, easy to manage, adhere well and conform to any shape quite readily. The scheme is;
F5910 41 Sqn, Conteville, France. August 1918. Capt. W. G. Claxton.
Photo 2 and 3 show the engine and radiator fitted, I still need to add fuel lines, throttle linkages and electrical wiring from the firewall to the engine.

Hi Des:

The radiator really enhances the outstanding engine work. The rest of the plane looks good as well. I like the color, just a hint of green. What did you use?

Take care

Thanks Terri for your nice words, they are much appreciated.

Mark..thank you also for your kind comments. The PC10 is a mixture of Humbrol 155 + about 10% 0f Humbrol 113, once dry I then applied two coats of Humbrol Matt Cote (absolutely brilliant stuff)thinned with about 60% enamel thinners.
Because the original PC10 colour was a variety of shades I wanted a colour a little different to my other PC10 painted models, side by side there is not a great deal of difference but enogh to make them stand apart.

My apologies to everyone, I goofed......
With the particular scheme I chose, the aircraft should NOT have the head rest and fairing. When applying the decals I must have checked Pheon Models excellent decal instruction sheet a dozen times but for some unknown reason I didn't notice the lack of a head rest, boy, talk about not seeing the forest for the trees......
Anyhow, it can't be changed so Captain Claxton now has a head rest.
I will now continue with my not so accurate 5a build.

Hi Des:

I know some where there is a picture of that self same a/c with a headrest on it, I just can't place it. I had read that somewhere a factory spec'd headrest and fairing was installed at a forward air field. The photographer's were notified, however never showed up; so the pilot went out and completed his mission. The nature of the installation has since been lost to history, until this very moment.
Either way, it is a great build.

The first photo shows the starting magneto winding handle which I made. Also the Aldis sight and the windscreen have been fitted.
Photo No.2 shows the Aldis sight, I cut off both ends and fitted the same length 2mm brass tube, I used CA to fix the tube in place. The sight is painted with Humbrol Satin Black. This photo also shows the windscreen very well, the prop is only a temporary fit.

Brass and copper does tarnish over time so I have coated all the brass and copper bits with clear finger nail polish, it is crystal clear, dries fast and very hard.

Thanks for all the kind comments, makes me feel better about the head rest.

I have finally finished the SE.5a, my 4th model in the WNW GB. It was a pleasure building this model, I encountered no major problems throughout the entire build, Wingnuts have to be congratulated for producing such a wonderful kit. The addition of the Brian Fawcett fin and rudder set plus Pheon Models decals certainly improves the appearance of the overall model.
I hope the following photos do justice for the model.

Beautiful build - the addition of brassparts works very well, and really lifts the details.

I have one in transit from WNW - can hardly wait

Thanks guys for your kind words, much appreciated.

Edo.. I built the Roden SE.5a last year, it is also a very good kit, it lacks some of the detail which Wingnuts has put into their kit but it still makes up to be a nice model.
