Paint question: The instructions call for the wheel wells to be painted Tamiya X-13, Metallic Blue. Does that seem correct? I'm doing an aircraft from the Akagi Aircraft Carrier Fighter Group.
Mike
Mike,
The years have caused a slight revision to the color (in their 1/32 A6M2 Tamiya recommends a mix of 3 X-13 blue to 1 X-25 clear green) but in essence, this is the color.
I doubt if anyone here will jump on you too hard if you just use the Metallic Blue from the bottle, but it probably should be bit more green.
Hope this helps!
Michael

Thanks Michael. Seems most everyone in town is out of the "Clear Green." I did get the Metallic Blue though.
Maybe I'll play with adding a touch of another green? We'll see.
Pics this weekend, but the cockpit is done, fuselage halves together, wings attached. Ran into a problem with the engine and cowling. Instructions show to put the cowling together first, then add the "engine." Uhh...no. Cowling is puttied and painted...and I really don't want to cut it, so I may jury-rig the engine. MTF!
Mike
Edit: Yellow and Blue make Green, right? Hehehehe...they have Clear Yellow and Clear Blue. Mmmmm....

And the little Academy Wildcat is done, as LtCmdr Thach's aircraft in the initial engagements of Midway. This aircraft was damaged and written off during the battle.

Adam, excellent little Wildcat there. Really clean, even at this small scale. She's a beaut!
Mike, have fun with the new airbrush!

edit: Adam, it looks like you'll have to fix that antenna though.

Thanks, and the Antenna is actually on correctly, it's supposed to lean forward like that to clear the canopy and still get enough length on the wire.

Tom,
Good choice! I know a couple of other guys here have built it, you might want to look at their threads for some small issues they found.

One step ahead of you, been looking at the Vals already completed and have been very impressed with what I've seen.
Just finishing up the office with a little help from my friends at Eduard:

In proress shots: Getting ready for some priming and paint. Wing joins have been filled and sanded, as have the surprisingly troublesome wheel spats and engine cowl. I had acquired the True Details wheel set for the Val, but on inspection discovered that they are too narrow for the kit mounting pins, so they'll move into the spares box and I'll use the kit items instead. On assembling the dive brakes, I discovered to my horror that I was missing one part A2, so for now, until I get a replacement from Hasegawa (not being able enough to produce one myself), it will do without on center brace on the port side.

Wow, a lot of progress done since I was here last time.
Adam, the Wildcat is lovely .clean and simple build, wich I had more kits like that in the stash.
Tom, congratulation on the fine Val. You mastered all the problem spots of the Hasegawa kit with ease.

Alright, I've had to drop a lot of campaigns due to real life circumstances, but I'm hoping to be able to complete a few including this one. I will be starting on my kit next week, and with some luck I can finish without the need for an extension. I'll get photos posted as soon as possible, looking forward to this one

Great work so far everyone! Just out of curiosity, is anyone planning to build the star of the show (the SBD)?

Hey Michael, Everyone, Nice builds going on here.
I figured to build the AM Vindicator but I have to move my kit stash this weekend and I have 2 AM SBDs up there. Have to see if they fit the time frame.
After dealing with some serious Real Life and having a motherboard failure a few weeks back I'm well overdue to scrape some plastic!

On the Polish modeling forum we have a similar group build. You can take a look how these guys are going:
Here are workbenches and
Here are the galleries (actually one gallery so far but should be filled up to the end of project).

Nice site Michal, some great work going on there too!
I have the week off and, though I should be concentrating on some builds for other campaigns (since I have the F2A done here), I am sorely tempted to get this classic out:
I can't believe I've had this since its pre-release (Dec. 2000!) and haven't built even one of them (though I have build a couple of straight Acc Min SBDs). This could be the moment! I just got Craig Symonds' "Battle of Midway" for my birthday and my interest is re-aroused. We'll see...

As promised, some progress on the Acc. Min. 1/48 SBD:
As I mentioned, this was a special boxing with parts to do late SBD-3s with the twin gun mount or SBD-4s with the later prop. It takes a bit of SBD knowledge to use the right parts, but they're all there including the un-noted later fuselage halves with the side doors for the twin guns.
Still without a doubt the best 1/48 Dauntlesses out there!

And here's where I've gotten to before I have to go back to work. Sigh, progress will slow down a bit now.
Some "modeling skill required" around the wing roots and rear wing/fuselage joint, but no surprises having built the kit before.

I looked back at the gallery. It's really cool to see this collection of aircraft from both sides of the battle. One little moment in time-- the early-war paint schemes. All very cool.
