Oh, now this was a surprise – a double act...

Having built the Roden DH2 already, I'm not sure I'd want to get the whole package, so I might hang back for the single releases – or will I?

It'll be nice to finally get a great EIII kit. I have the B.A. kit in the stash, and although I think this is probably their most buildable kit, It'll be relegated to the bin now...

Mikael

P.S. Wonder where the DVII is Hmmmm?

Tempting to go for tyhe double but.... only one profile option each kind of limits things. So I may well wait till the Singles are releases myself. I've downloaded the PDF instructions though (always a bad thing to do!)

I've still a brace of Albi's to finish to keep my modelling time busy anyway.

I've scrutinised the instructions too (just could'nt help myseelf downloading them) The EIII seems an "easy" build, and will probably be WNWs easiest yet?

Yup, the one option profile only, makes me want to wait for the singles as well...

BTW there are some pics of Ray Rimells build of an EIII over at "customers models" at WNWs website.

Been waiting for these two for a while. Mr. Lawson may have his wish in all of us building The Great War!!! One question though, Does anyone know if there will be markings for Immelmann's E.III in the single release of the Eindecker? If so I can wait a few weeks for the single release.

WNW seems to keep the coming markings close to theirs chests prior to releasing. Also, in the past, they have released kits with profiles that were not necessarily, those of the most know aces on the type. (The green one thats been published already is an Austrian plane I think?)

Having said that, I hope they have one or two aces in the cards for this one.

Thanks Mikael. We can keep our fingers crossed. One thing I noticed on the instructions is the stiching on the lower fuselage is done as seperate parts and looks to take care of the seam on the bottom. I'm definately getting both. Just the boxing is the question.

There are 2 methods coming to mind if the peice is not textured to begin with. One is use a small round wire brush on Bare Metal F of aluminum foil and apply it to cowling with spray adhesive it will take a few tries but it works. The next is the same way you do a Mottled camouflage from WWII. Apply and slightly darker base metalic color to the cowling and let dry. Mix lighter color then reduce the air pressure in the airbrush and set a stop for the minimum paint flow and slowly move the patern over the area needing the pattern. You can't stop, motion needs to be fluid and if you go too slow the paint pools and the splatters from the airflow. Much more difficult but will get you the desired effect. HTH Steve

These sound like two good ways to go Steve.

I've read about a third method as well, though never tried it.

After spraying a dark metallic or matt black base coat, you go over the area with a "silver calligraphy pen" (Available in arts and crafts shops), marking the area with small squiggles. Then lightly overspray with another metallic coat, until you get a result you like.

Best way I guess is trying on a piece of scarp first to see how it goes.

Greetings all:

Another way is to paint the light color, then the darker color and when dry, using an eraser pencil, gently rub off the paint with the eraser. I haven't used it, but I have seen the results and they are convincing, and it seems to be the most hassle free method.
I too am looking forward to getting these kits and building them, but; a rather large stash awaits me at the moment. So many models, too little time.
I did get the model bench squared away.

Best

This is called "machine turning" see here.

WNW has updated the hints and tips section with a tip on Machine turning the metal parts on the Eindecker. Their section is variation on my technique with the airbrush, but will work. Paint a base of Flat aluminum and then go over the area with a brush dipped in chrome silver. Just make sure the squiggles don't overlap. The big difference will be a soft edge the airbrush and a hard edge with the good old No.1 paintbrush. So between the 2 its a preference of finish. HTH Steve

I did something similar to the cowling and other metal parts on my Eduard 1/48 OEFFAG Albatros. The base color was airbrushed with Alclad aluminum then a darker shade was "scribbled" on with a fine brush and Citadal acrylic metallic paint (Boltgun Metal if I recall correctly - it's been a few years). By using dissimilar paints, I could clean off the squiggles with a damp rag, without harming the base color, if I didn't like the results.

Cheers,
Eric

I will most likely use the airbrush, but I'm tempted to try the foil. The foiled birds on LSP are amazing, and think with the heavier allumium foil I machine the texture without tearing the foil. I'll have to do build log when the Eindecker arrives to show my experiments. Steve

Great News all WWI nuts!

The new batch of kits have now gone live over at WNW. We're looking at one versions of the DH2 and two of the EII/EIII...
