Even I was shocked to see that I started this about 4 years ago!!
Since then I've decided to change the scheme from Masters Mistress to a 357th FG D, "Ol Flak joe

I was quite shocked actually when I picked this back up and started tinkering with it how close the building part is to completion.
So, if I can get stuck into it then I should hopefully have a completed Mustang sitting in the display case soon.
Progress over the last couple of days has seen a base coat of neutral grey on the underside followed by my usual technique of weathering the finish.

Really four years ....Wow . Still worth the wait Nigel .
How are the fit of the cheek panels ? My didn't fit right so I ended up gluing them in place . Top and under side can still be removed .

Your bottom side weathered Neutral Gray really looks good. I'm not a big fan of pre-shading, but in this case is does work well.

Terri, the engine panels fit really well on mine.
Not much pre shading shows through, most of the effect is achieved by spraying progressively lighter versions of the base colour extremely thinned.
I've got the base coat of OD on the topside tonight.
I'll try and get it shaded and streaked later in the week and then it's Miracle Mask time.

Thanks Nigel , my panels I think were on the wrapped side . They would not sit down near the spinner . even with test fitting , even went back to make sure everything was lined up . It is what it is , besides I have another in the stash with hell of a lot of bells and whistles and even the kitchen sink for good measure so I can do Cripes a mighty !
Nice job on the olive drab top side . Looking forward on the weathering outcome . Your underside looks super . You hit the right balance with the per-shading . Something that can be over done easily .

Nigel,
I really like how you weathered and toned down the O.D. with a lighter color. It certainly looks quite realistic.
I've been using that technique for some time, and find it to be almost fool proof. Since I've gone to black basing, I still find it useful for darker colors that don't really work well with the Black Basing technique.

Its a really handy technique for giving some variation in tone to what could easily be a monotonous overall finish and, like you say Joel, its pretty much impossible to mess up.

The intention is to finish this with all the markings, checkerboard, and hopefully noseart and name painted on.
I think the only decals will be on the undercarriage struts.

A coat of Klear to protect the paint and off we go with painting the markings on.
Love masking spinners,,,,,,,,NOT.
Amazing how a splash of colour makes everything look better and gives you a boost to get moving on a build.

Your white lines are absolutely perfect.
BTW, I just got the Tamiya P-51D last week. At my current rate of building plus hopefully one car per year, It's a good year or two away from the bench at best.
