Markings turned out great , what is your yellow mix ? I like it . I also had a relapse and their was no way on stopping the fingers taking over the keyboard .

Looking forward on seeing how the checkers turn out . I have tried masking these in the past before and each time was a epic fail . Decals are fine with me , yes I cheat on this part

The Serial numbers look great. Not a drop of flash can be seen anywhere
the angle of the letters on the rudder really does throw off one's perspective. But they're still perfectly aligned to each other.

Hi Terri.
Yeah,, its going to be "fun" doing the checkers but I've done it in 1:48th so no reason why I shouldnt be able to do it in 1:32.
The yellow is bog standard Tamiya Flat Yellow.

Finished the undercarriage and stood this bad boy up on its feet while I try and summon up the enthusiasm to start masking off those checkers.
Perhaps another coat of Klear first.....

the Yellow base looks perfect. Looking forward to how you accomplish that checkerboard effect. It does look rather daunting going around the nose 360 degrees.

Still got some overspray to be address on the red area of the port side of the rudder. Did the OD bit this afternoon 😊

OK, I finally got to spend a bit of time at the bench this weekend coupled with being in the right frame of mind to have a go at the checker cowling on the Mustang.
So, step by step, this is how it's progressed.
This is how we left it on Jan 2nd.
First job was to mask off the half way point of the yellow area, and then mask of the second row of "squares"
Mask over the front area and spray the red checkers onto the second row.
Masking off, halfway there
Then comes the easier part. Marking out and masking the front row of checkers.
And after a good check to make sure everything lines up and is burnished down, a few mists of red.
Off with the masking,the cowlings see the light of day for the first time in nearly 6 months and the 357th FG red/yellow cowling band is revealed.
I'll let the paint cure overnight and then seal it in with a coat of Klear.
See you for the next installment,, whenever that may be

The checks were a lot of fun, and it's always satisfying when you take all the masking off and find its worked perfectly!
The jug in the background is a 1:48th Tamiya, which I'm doing as a P-47C. Which particular one I haven't decided yet, or to be accurate, I've changed my mine at least 4 times as to which one it'll end up being. Still got the OD and the white bands to paint on before I have to commit. I've been tatting around with it on and off for a few months now.
I made a start with the decals ( stop grinding your teeth Mal), on 'Ol Flak Joe.
The first two have gone on beautifully, and are now settling down under copious amounts of Microsol.
Once "Joe" has thoroughly dried I have to split the decal along the break between to the cowling panels. Then it'll get another wash of MicroSol and then everything will get a couple of coats of Klear before I put the "drop shadow" decal over the lettering.
Question is, the only photo I've got of the actual aircraft shows the artwork on the starboard side but it's a matter of conjecture as to whether it was also on the port side. Do I?/Don't I?
No rush on making the decision just yet.

It's always a bit of a pucker moment when you have to slice through a decal which sits over two removable parts.
A brand new #11 blade did the job grandly though.

So, seeing as how it's known that some 357th FG Mustangs carried the names on both sides of the aircraft, and it's great noseart too, I decided to go for it and apply the decals to the port side as well.
Settling down under copious amounts of Microsol. Once dry I'll split the decal across the individual cowling panel as per the starboard side and then add the drop shadow decals before moving on.

Im really pleased with how this is looking now and once the drop shadow decals are on over the lettering hopefully a burst of enthusiasm will see this finally finished.

Only a small detail but the drop shadow has really made the "Ol Flak Joe" lettering stand out, and apart from the small decals on the prop blades, that's the decalling done. All 6 of them.
Just finished painting the canopy frames etc and once the last coats of Klear are applied for protection it'll be time for the panel line wash.

Time to get dirty, and let all that exquisite Tamiya detail pop out.
It won't take long to dry in this heat
but I'll leave it overnight to dry and get stuck in with the paper towel and cotton buds tomorrow.

One factor of a build lasting over such a long period of time is remembering what you've done previously.
Something thats just become apparent as I've realised I painted the bubble canopy frame RAF Dark Green and the rest of the airframe OD.
Oops,, easy fix
I've also discovered a slight "halo" above the blue circle on the port fusalage insignia which needs masking and a quick dust of OD. Thirdly, I missed part of the port wing white band with the Klear coat and consequently the wash has shown up the area missed as a darker colour. Another easy fix, remask the white band and a dusting of white over that area.
Takes almost as long to say as it will to do
Back to the kitchen roll and cotton buds
