Let's explore the design genius of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland. From the darkest days of the Fokker Scourge to the dawn of jet air travel to the 21st Century, de Havilland's designs have flown over every continent on Earth.
And those wonderful names! Moths, Mosquitos, Vampires, Venoms, Vixens, Comets, and Tridents. Expanding into the Dominions, we have Chipmunks, Beavers, Otters, Caribous, Buffalos and Drovers to amuse us.
The DH-2 can be argued to be the world's first purpose-designed fighter. The DH-4 the world's first genuine multi-role aircraft. The Moth the world's first successful private sport aircraft. The Mosquito wasn't the first at anything it did, but that didn't stop it from being the best. Nor did it stop the Germans from paying it the extreme compliment of trying to copy it.
Vampires, Venoms and Vixens served the RAF and RN throughout the Cold War, bringing the de Havilland tradition of unconventional solutions to design problems around the world.
Entire books have been written about the tragedy of the Comet and the last three successful de Havilland designs were doomed by the British Government to wear another company's name, but their lineage is pure de Havilland. The RAF retired the Nimrod in 2011, the Trident flew into the 1980s, and derivatives of the DH-125 business jet are still flying. In Canada the de Haviland Canada Dash 8 remains in production, as do modern versions of the Twin Otter and Beaver while representatives of all DHC's designs still earn their living.
There are plenty of candidates to build, and variants to suit modellers from the early aviation crowd right up to the jet age.

I guess I'll have to buy a Vampire now. Push back the start date so I can save up 48 quid for the alley cat kit

Jessica ! A very well written intro to the world of DeHavilland aircraft. What a great list of history and the parts those planes played in it. I wish you a great campaign and if I built AC I would join up !
Thanks !

Hmmm, I have a DH-4 somewhere in my stash, this would be a great opportunity to get it done. Any idea when this campaign would start?

I have an Airfix Mosquito in my pile but I'll need some decals to replace the 1960's ones. I saw a reference to a Swiss Air version. Does anyone know a source for decals for this version?

Now that we're well oversupplied with eager builders, I'll submit the campaign and we'll see when the admins grant us our campaign dates. Off the top of my head we're probably looking at an Autumn campaign, given what else is going on in Campaign Central.

Gosh, now I goot go out and find a dH kit somewhere.

Awesome, now gives me time to decide between the DH.4 or DH.9, both those Roden kits look attractive......ummmmmmmm? I am leaning towards the Curtiss Wright build version, something about those Marine markings......

Startdate September 1st. That is great. Plenty of time to finish other builds.
DH Vampire or Venom will be the plane to build.

WOW, it's hard to find de Havilland kits on this end of the pond. One LHS only had a Tiger Moth and a Chipmunk. Now they only have the Tiger Moth. The other LHS I dropped in on, I didn't see any (wasn't looking too hard by then).
Whatever, I'm in.
