Capt Tommy ,
I understand where you are coming from but the tape doesn't go down over the decals themselves . There is a few steps with this process . The tape gets laid down first and then Mr.surface gets sprayed . Once dried the surfaces will be sanded with a scotch brite pad just so the colour of tape shows . Then the decals go on .
Ivan , you summed it up pretty good .

Been away for a while but all is good and I was actual able to squeeze time in front of the bench .
For the most part the panel lines are down . Still a few more here and there on the tail . Work started on the wings cutting free the control surfaces and adding hinge detail . Lower wing hinges still need their final shaping . Prop blades got cleaned up and glued on to the spinner and bolt detail added to the fire wall Access panels on the gun deck are made form alum paper type stuff I pick up at the dollar store in their crafting section .

Wow Terri,
Splendid work! You are really paying tribute with the work you are putting into this gem.
I have eclectic tastes - just as I am smitten with the long-nosed P-40, so am I with the SSW D.III. It reminds me of me - rotund and bucktoothed.

Hi Fred , very sorry for the late reply back . It has been pretty busy of late leaving not much time for forums .
Progress has been made and I'm ready to start laying some paint on this bird ! As soon as the batteries are charge I will get up some pic's .
Reminds me as well Fred , still have to finish off that P-40C

I guess I should share my progress on what has been done .
The gun deck access panels I wasn't happy with them and redid them using 0.5mm sheet sanded down to a finer profile and raided the PE parts bin for the hardware . Drilled holes just didn't look right for a raised detail .
Other details added ,
Rolled lip on the cowling
Cowling clips
Rear cushion , front crash pad
Lower wing access panels
4 rivet heads on the fuselage side ( note left side only )
New axle bar ( still needs a few more detail bits )
Wing tapes made from Tamiya tape with Mr.Surface 500 sprayed . Sanded with a scotch brite pad .
Control surfaces , three coats of future .
New cab struts made from contrail strut .

Nice work Terri!
The race is on now - you've got to get this finished before Eduard's new kit that Stephen showed us comes out.
All the best

A little on the late side of getting those pic's up , but here is where I'm at on this build .
Wings ,
This involves a bit of work but as you can see within the effect on the endless variations . First step was to spray the wing spars Tamyia dessert yellow when dry / masked off and deck tan was sprayed along the tape edges and Tamyia white filled in the rest . Next step the ribs got masked and Tamyia smoke sprayed along all the edges and bit heavier at the control surfaces . When all of this had tried the wings where then masked off and Tamiya hull red was used for the per-shading on the fuselage on a white base coat . Tamiya Red was sprayed . On the tail feathers I didn't use Aviattic lozenge . The kit decal I used for this since the part would be covered in red . This sat over night to dry and a few coats of future applied in prep for the decaling . Lozenge was was first then Lo! on the fuselage sides .
The wheel covers also got coved with the kit lozenge and over sprayed in red as well as the axle , internal struts and new N struts made using contrail strut sanding to shape . Prop is ready of the laminations . I'm waiting for Karaya's engine to arrive in the mail so in the mean time there is still a fair bit more to do .

Fantastic progress - that Aviattic lozenge certainly seals the deal and upgrades the build yet to (another) next level - I lost count

Hi Ivan I'm really impressed with Aviattic's lozenge . It can be pulled and tugged and conforms over the surface detail really well . I did have to use a small bit of sol on the leading edge but other then that they performed wonderfully . I highly reconmmend this product . It is on hold for the moment thoigh . I damaged my right shoulder and not able to sit at the bench and I'm also waiting for Karaya's resin engine to arrive in the mail . So hopefully in a few weeks I can get back to the bench .

A wee bit of an up-date .
Progress has been slow but coming along quite well .
Top lozenge hass been applied , lower rib tape with upper tapes are in place on the lower wing . Still have the top rib tapes on the wing to do , but the under side is done . Rudder cross in place as well .
Karaya's engine arrived safe and sound I have start work on it just no photo's yet .
For the rib tapes I used Microsculpt 5 colour lower and upper lozenge .

Great work, Terri. This look very nice, after following your
build more silent, i guess you need no new Eduard kit, the added details and scratch building is awesome.
Did Ernst Udet use this one in combat ??

Thanks Ben and Bernd
Bernd , I will be getting the new Eduard kit because I do need it
There is a lot of controversy over this scheme and whether it was actually used in combat . It is speculated that this scheme was used for photo ops promoting a national hero . So it is not known if or how long he flew this aircraft in combat . This is a late model D.III model which by war ends it was to late to make a change on the front .

Hi Terri, thanks for the info, what is this late modification?
Cowling?
I don t have Udets book, but read it in parts from a belgian webside about Jasta 2 "B" The webmaster was proud to translate it from old german in new english, i had to translate it back Udet did not mention, he was flying other planes as the D.VII.
I especially like the look of the overpainted lozenge, which came out very nice.
Happy modelling
Bernd

I have a wee bit of an up-date . Now that that pesky cold is gone and I can breath once more time spent in front of the bench and the mojo is back .
I used Karaya's resin engine which was kind of a letdown to be honest . The crankcase block was egged shape . Talk about a challenge on trying to correct this . I ended up sanding the shape to a more accurate appearance and the cylinders the bottoms got sanded down . The inside on the cowl I had thin even more . At this stage it was only sanded to fit the kit engine . Karaya's was a donation towards this build .
The Guns are Tom's Modelworks PE , this are like kits on their own . These got a coat of black paint and then dry brush with metal graphite sticks ( used the same way an chalk pastels . Weathering is done and the rigging anchoring points are in place ( wire hoops ) . The prop I tried a new method and one I will be using more and more .
The blades I painted with Tamiya buff and shot a coat of dull lacquer over this . Once dried the laminations and grain is done with pencil crayons . I didn't have the Wotan prop logo so these are rob off a aftermarket P-51B sheet in 48 scale . They fit the bill pretty good .
