If this is you out of practice Terri... Well what can I say - a beautiful progression and outstanding detail and painting on the interior

Terri,
Like Ben I've been "sitting in the weeds" quietly following your progress. What an excellent job and I believe it's the best I've seen you do to date, just magnificent and the detail for 1:48 Scale is a real pleasure to see. Great modelling and I look forward to seeing this one completed.
Cheers,
Lance

Hey Ben , don't need to say anything . Just dropping by and having peek works just fine What's complicated is finding time to sit in front of the bench .
Mikael , I haven't done this kinda work since I did the FE-8 a few years back . Every thing has been out of the box of late . Not a 100 % accurate but with the refs I have and info gathered over the years I'm feeling quite proud right now !
Thanks Rick If it wasn't you I don't think this project would have gotten off the ground
Hi Lance , nothing wrong with being silent , glad that you are watching an enjoying the build I'm looking forward to this one being finished as well . Started this build 7 months ago !

A bit of an up-date here on my lastest progress . Control is finished and rudder bar in place with the cockpit finally glued in place with the fire wall and cowl which didn't have a good fit to begin with and putty was applied and sanded back already . Only items left in the pit are making the compass and a few instruments here and there , ammo bins and oil/fuel tanks . Once that is all in-stalled the gun deck goes on and then the real fun begins with even more filling and sanding and re-scribe lost panel lines .

Cockpit is finally finished and ready to closed up . Still need to work on the gun deck . I had to a strip down the middle to widen it by 2.5mm . The fit is better then before , still a bit more trimming and sanding followed by putty ...

Hi Jessica , You have the skills to build her . I seen the work you do on your airliners . Even out of the box the gun deck , cowl and engine don't fit , cab struts are too short and the top wing needs to be flatten getting rid of the dihedral .

More progress has been made on the gun deck . With new panel lines needing too be re-scribed scrap plastic rod was use for filling , sanded followed by Squadron green . A few spots on the underside where the cowl meets the chin pan . Once this part is finished the PE parts for the fuselage will be added and again more sanding and filling ...Will also start working on the rib tapes and start getting this ready for primer and decals .
Won't be using the kit guns and will op with Tom's Modelworks PE German guns . The kit breaches just don't cut it and for the little extra love for detail these are perfect !

Continuing to watch this build with interest - impressive attention to detail, working of Early Eduard styrene and spectacular detailing... It's not an easy subject and looking better every update.
As I'm building my 1/32 - it's also interesting to see how each manufacturer chose to translate the details... Can't wait until I'm at closed fuselage stage too

Hi Ivan ,
Eduard's early kits aren't the easiest to build but they do make excellent test beds for scratch building . I haven't had much time this week fir in front of the bench , but it's along weekend so hopefully I can get some time in .
I will be following your build on Rodens kit . I have it in my stash , but will be doing the same to that kit as this one with custom PE part from a friend . Thanks for following long .

Thanks Bernd . Still have two more and the Flashback kit plus both Koster vac kits and I will be getting two of the new kits when they come out . Next the Pfalz D.III/a this is my second most favorite aircraft from the great war .
I'm almost done the panel lines and will save myself a few steps on the rib tapes . I was planning on using Tamiya tape with a coat of Mr.surface shot through the airbrush , yet more seanding and sealing . So what I'm going to do is use the kit lozenge cut up for the rib tapes . No sanding or the need of Mr.surface ! I'm a happy camper right now !

Oooh, use of thin strips of masking tape with primer applied over it is excellent in lieu of molded on ribtapes... Would have been about the correct thickness without sanding on 1/32, though may be just a bit overdone in 1/48... Need to keep this gem for the next time I'm building another one...
Btw, what is your opinion of the Flashback SSD.III?
Cheers,
Ivan

Using tape works very well . Even clear packing is useful .
Give it a try on a future build .
The Flashback kit uses Eduards plastic of the SSW . The resin cockpit pit well nothing really special and needs a lot of correction and the seat is moulded as part of the frame work and doesn't have the lighting holes . Not as much PE parts , but some of the bits are better then Eduards . Engine will still not fit inside the cowl and the lozenge in the kit is best tossed . Over all the same as the Eduard kit lot's of work involved .

I have to Question the use of tape over decal. As you can see in the above picture If it will down load) the Wing rib tape (Lower wing) is a Hue change and if the picture loads correctly it should be close to 1/48 scale.
I believe looking at my various masking/packing tapes all are too thick for for even a 1/32 model. My opinion of course I will try to down/up load my Smithsonian Halberstadt Cl-IV pictures.

Terri,
Another DH-9 photo, Notice the wing tapes. If there is a Tiger Moth or Sterman or even a Cub near you out there look at the fabric wing at 1/32 distance.
Great Work on the SS D-III

There is a gray area between micrometer and appearances - sometimes incorrect dimensions are overcome by visually stimulating outcome or a desired accent effect... Armor modeling would not be where it is in popularity without artistic liberties taken with a lot of the subjects - I feel it's natural to go with more expressive representations and playing with some dimensions to fool the viewer's eye.
This also got me thinking - Eduard casts Allied aircraft ribtapes super thick in 1/48, while central powers fabric receives just a raised rib with no tape detail... Were Allied aircraft using much thicker fabric / doping for tapes or is this lack of consistency / reluctance to update molds by Eduard?
I'm going off many 1/48 Albatros models compared to Eduard's Sopwith Camel, the latter having ribtapes cast well over the thickness of the masking tape (even sanded down some).
