Ola People of the wings.

Today we had the SMC 2013 event in the Netherlands and as every year I went to it. Really cool event. Lots of merchandise for sale. I picked up PART PE sets for all the Roden Aircraft I have (All three!!!). But most chuffed of all I'm about my find of 2 sets of 3 1:72 German WW1 pilots and ground crew in white metal modeled after drawings from the old Osprey series. Cost was really good as well only 2,60 euro per set.

Now I can put figures next to my aircraft!!!!

These were oruiginally cast under the name "New Hope Design". The are based on illustrations from the Osprey books Airwar series 1978 done by;

Alex Imrie
German Fighter Units 1914 - May 1917, Airwar 13.
German Fighter Units 1917 -1918, Airwar 17.

and Alex Revell
British Fighter Units Western Front 1914 - 1916 Airwar 14.
British Fighter Units Western Front 1917 - 1918 Airwar 18.

Ola Stephen

Are they? I wouldn't know about that... The guy I bought them from said he sculpted these himself 10 years ago or so. Then again... I know of only a handfull of 1:72 ww1 German Aircraft pilots and groundcrew and these were not among them. so I have no clue if that is true or not.

Here are a couple of the books and a New Hope Design header card. In your Image # 3 from the left is from the British set and the flyer is wearing the Sidcot combination togs.

The things one learns every day...

Thanks for clearing that up. So one of the guys is a brit... That would look terribly wrong next to a D.VII

These books are OOP being printed in 1978 and again if memory serves in the early nineties. But they might make a unique set of reviews. If you can pick them up they form a decent understanding of these combatants and their activities.

LOL

And immediately Pics pop up of allied pilots next to D.VII's
I read the tekst rather quick.. But that are Postwar pics right? So If I do a war version it is not very likely an allied pilot would stand next to a German fighter. Unless it was downed. But then again... I might just be proven wrong in an instant... with pics

@ Stephen.
I will keep my eyes open coming IPMS nats here in the Netherlands if I can find those books.

Yes, those were taken in late 1918/early 1919 but there were scattered instances of D.VII types being captured/forced down and evaluated by the RAF, so it's plausible for a wartime scene.

I was cruising through some old images I found my build of a Fokker V.10 (never left the drawing board I am told). But there standing on the float is the same NHD figure as seen 2nd from the right in your image Robert.

@ Jessica
Thanks for that info. I think I will keep that kind of builds away till I have some better references. It seems to me that that are really specific dio ideas.

@ Stephen
Yes I see that that is exactly the same figure. Pretty weird aircraft by the way. With those big floats in front.

I used the V.7 configuration for the wings and an extended Dr.I fuselage similar to the V.6 for a Mercedes inline. I worked out the center of gravity with the extended nose area and used a white metal motor for the inline. Thus the float struts were angled slightly forward. The floats were left over items from an older build and filled with plaster. Knowing what I do now, today I would change some things slightly. A hypothetical build for the future.
