Just curious what other folks do whether focussing on building models of aircraft from specific eras such as WW2 aircraft, Cold War etc or nations like Russian or US aircraft?

I'm just getting models of my favourite aircraft with no real theme or anything. Got aSepecat Jaguar and Tu-22M as my first 2 models and hoping to get a F-117, Vulcan (My favourite aircraft) and Mig-15 at some point in the future

So, what about other people, what do you focus on getting?

Well, I've concentrated on US military aircraft from early monoplanes to the F-16. Lately I've branched out, mostly due to interesting group builds here at Aeroscale. Last year I finished my first non US aircraft in about 40 years. My stash has also added a few bi-planes, airliners and helicopters in the last year...

I'm a bit of a magpie in that my interests focus on...oh, shiny!

I tend to build in themes. For a long time I collected anything Canadian I could get my hands on. Right now I'm building airliners, mostly in 1/144 but I also like Great War stringbags with all those fiddly struts and rigging. I also like the rare, unusual and esoteric, especially if it's in vacuform or resin.

Well if it interests me I'll build it but I also builds in themes, Naval aviation from all nations with a biased towards the FAA and the F-14 Tomcat, recce aircraft, aircraft from the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, Hawker aircraft, Sepecat Jaguar and Bristol Beaufighters.
With that lot there are some that fall into two or more themes.

My collections seem to anything......plastic, with a little bit of resin and photo etched thrown in. Scale, country, type all seem to be irrelevant.

I build strictly 1/48 scale aircraft these days. My era of interest is pre-WW11 thru Vietnam. Area of greatest interest changes from time to time, but I'm more focused on USN aircraft, then anything else.

Two favorite aircraft manufactures are: Grumman's and Republic. I grew up less then 30 min from either of their main plants on Long Island.

Focus? What focus. Prefer pre WW11 1/48. The stash has everything from 1/28 Wright Flyer to 1/72 BAC Lightning F6. Mainly British but a good salting of German, American and Russian types. Most recent buys HP O/400, P-39N, Piper Cub, Stearman and IL-2M.

Hi,

Till now i only build WWII Lufwaffe subjects, all in 48th scale.
But lately i feel the urge to build a modern jet (48th).
I want one that i can load up with a lot of ordnance.

I also started to collect Luftwaffe 1/32 kits, but i have no plans to build them soon.

It must be 1/48 scale

The kit has to be part of my stash already, I aim at buying nothing until the stash is beaten to death, however ...

For the rest, main interest is jets from WW 2 till today, and helicopters

I build 1/144th scale aircraft, as well as buildings, vehicles and ground support equipment that have been seen at Bucholz field Kwajalein, to go on Bucholz field layout -

which Draslab has recently reminded me I actually havent seen since May of last year.
There are a surpisingly large number of different aircraft on this list, US Airforce and Army transports mostly, but quite a number of civil airliners, and aircraft of friendly air forces around the pacific rim.

Stash? what stash, ive been down to 4 unopened kits for the past 2 years. Just now coming out of my stupor or sleep or whatever! Focus! as Andrew stated, no focus and in my own terms what ever is on sale/special that the little wallet will allow.

Hi Jack, welcome to the forums!

Like a lot of other people I mainly do whatever takes my fancy. I have a preference to RAF and FAA from WWII, but I also like classic western Cold War jets. I've recently gotten into WW1 and inter-war biplanes. They can be very tricky to build but make for interesting and often colourful models. I build in 1/72 for the most part. I like to work to a constant scale and it has the most choice.
I also do Science Fiction kits when I fancy a change of pace, mostly Star Trek and Star Wars, Allied WWII armour and figures (mix of both 1/72 and 1/35) and the occasional warship.

I concentrate on 1:72 scale, mostly fighters, from the early 30's to the early 60's, but primarily WW2. I have some 1:48 scale kits in the stash, but need to plan a better way to have them on display before glue meets plastic. (Mainly branched into this scale because I also build 1:48 scale armour.)

I also build a bit of 1:144 scale for variety.

I have always been interested in early aviation, so I have a number of WW1 biplanes. Lately I've been focussing on the 1920's and 1930's especially civil aviation such as racers and airlines, such as the Ford Trimotor.

In the past few months I've started to collect WW2 aircraft kits and they are a big change from fabric and wires.

I collect and build models for their historical significance and/or because of their uniqueness.

Interesting question...

I stay away from anything with a swastika on it...call it a principle. I do have a Messerschmitt Bf108 in Swiss markings as a result.

That leaves a very strong preference for WWII fighters in 1/48, from prototype (when available) to end of line models (some very, very nice Spitfires available these days). Makes you appreciate the development of a type.

My current selection however is based on the pilot...

I couldn't resist the Acadamy Phantom in Robin Olds "SCAT XXVII" markings. I was curious about the 27, which resulted in reading up on the story of this remarkable pilot. I found that he has been piloting P38's and P51's in WWII. I also found the decals to associate these models with this pilot, so what I am looking at now is a couple of P38's, a P51 and a Phantom in "his" markings. All these aircraft wore the name "SCAT", which links them together over time. All this made me do a lot of reading on the career of this gentleman, which was a very good use of my time...

Harald

I am an avid collector and occasional builder of WW2 subjects, largely germans but going all nations in small amounts. Things like the plane's design or camouflage usually compelles me to buy it. Must be quarter scale cause I find that the most well balanced scale between shelve space, budget and detailing, otherwise I would plunge into 1/32 head first
I also have a small stash of WW1 subjects, but all that rigging, oh my!

Cheers

In addition,

I usually only make one 1/48 scale model of a given plane (1 F-16, one rafale ...) and I tend to go for the best box available.

Seldomy, I build several variants of the same basic model like different blackhawks.

I dream of themes as well, like getting all the different MIG or SAAB. In reality, having planes that fit a common subject are rare in my collection.

Lately, I have a large interest in early 50s jets having build a T-33, F-84, Meteor and still working on a Demon and a Skyray.

Today, killing the stash is the main theme for my modelling activities.

Oh yea, I guess I should add, I usually work in 1/72 and try to limit my builds to one example of each. I'll bent that rule for major variants, glass nosed vs gun nose B-17/B-24/B-25, swept wing vs not swept F-84/F-86/F9F. Oh and P-40's, why o why do I seem to have at least one of every P-40 variant?????

If I had unlimited space and time and resources, I would model 1/48 armor and air. However, due to my interests, I am mainly 1/48 for air and 1/35 for armor. For naval subjects I am mainly 1/700 although 1/350 is starting to cover my favorite subjects. (Although I would probably remain 1/700 as 1/350 affords more detail opportunity - the exact opposite of my armor / air philosophy.)

I like 1/32 for "special" aircraft subjects.

My interests:

The Great Pacific War
North Africa
WWI air
Italian military
Minor countries

Generally 1914-1955.

My main focus of my building is 1/25 heavy commercial vehicles, but I do branch out on occasion. I have a couple of 1/700 ships, (2) 1/144 scale aircraft, and (6) 1/2500 USS Enterprise ships (1701 through 1701-E).
