Here is a little history and operational history.
I-16 history and operational use
Propaganda Photos of the ace Kovalenko's I-16 type 24, tail No 11, on 6 July 1941; the plane had "For Stalin" on the left side and "Kill the facists!" on the other side. The pilot photographed is Safonov.

The Heinkel is trying my patience. I always buy grubby kits but I never finish them.
So according to the list any non-zero Japanese fighter is okay?
If that's the case I shall re-enter with the venerable ARII Ki-43 Hayabusa. Which, having been known as the "army zero," may have been slightly eclipsed.
I shall attempt a start tomorrow.

You seemed to be doing just fine Richard the kit was together and the painting was proceeding apace, what happened? I ask as I was considering getting the kit as the He112 (and the He113)is on my hit list of models to get. And I was considering the RS kit as it seemed like an interesting kit.

Thinking about building a second plane for the campaign since I've accumulated quite a few overshadowed fighters over the years. Here's a shot of the kits from my stash that fit the campaign:
Thinking of maybe the Avia next, though it was only a prototype by the time Czechoslovakia was absorbed into Germany.

Richard, too bad about the Heinkel.
Do what you think iis best, but the Heinkel would be a nice edition to the campaign.
No sweat.

That George is a gorgeous kit. IIRC the decals suck though

Martyn, the Avia would be a great choice. I build that 20 years ago when it was produced in Eastern Europe and cost was next to nothing.
Connor remember the quality, but think it is the same kit, so do not expect too much.

You're right Richard. I should keep at it. Sometimes I lose steam on crummy kits. Plus think is an ugly, ugly aircraft. The original gull wing was no good so it ended up with this incredibly small, very fat elliptical wing with totally mismatched squared off oversize horizontal stabilizers. It's not pretty. Very unpleasant proportions to me...
So I came back to the thing and now the RLM 63 is on. Shiny from future in the photo.
Bushioka I would do the Avia. By far the most overshadowed of the bunch!

Consider your Heinkel model as a 'tribute' Most people arn't familiar with the type. Most will say 'isn't that a spitfire?' Then you can say ' Well actually it's a Heinkel 112' Then you can tell them how they were designed about the same time, but Heinkel designed his wing independently, and the Luftwaffe decided to go with the Messerscmidt 109 instead..... and so on.

Edit: Committing a Yak-9 I've had stored away to the Hairy Stick campaign. As such, here's my second entry for Overshadowed Fighters: KP Models' 1/72 Avia B.35 'Advanced Czechoslovak Fighter'. Since it was a prototype at the time of the German annexation, it'll be what if no matter what. As such this is a good opportunity to use my Slovak Air Force markings from Blue Rider.

I have most of the Avia painted with just the last major construction left to bring it all together.

Well I've been not exactly busy on this model, but I have been doing a little work here and there. So just to keep you guys and girls up to date here are some pics.

Devlopmental & operational history of the Avia B.35.
^A prototype of the Avia B.35.
Mainly this bird is overshadowed on account of being in the developmental stages when the German annexation of Czechoslovakia happened. An improved variant was built by the Germans, designated the B.135 - which served in small numbers in the Bulgarian Air Force. According to Bulgarian sources, four B.135 fighters shot down a B-24 bomber intruding on their airspace late in the war.
This B.35.1 represents what it might have looked like had production gone forward for the Slovak Air Force.

It looks like a P-40 with fetal alcohol syndrome.

LOL what do you expect when you have several scalpels blade up in a jar so they wont damage the tips and you have your files and pin vise in the same jar???
A little more weathering and a coat of dull cote and I'll be ready to post pics in the campaign gallery.

I was going to say it looked like a grumpy spitfire.
Principal colour on. I think the RLM63 over 65 scheme looks most striking, especially with the fascista markings on it. Masking off some white wing tips and rudder and we'll be decalling in no time.

Nice progress, Ray. Marking wise you have definitely chosen the coolest scheme. However, splinter camouflage is always a nice look in my opinion I agree the Spanish roundels look out of place on the splinter camouflage though.

Already contributed two birds to the build, but I did just happen to receive two obscure Dutch fighters in the mail yesterday. Any interest in a trio of obscure fighters from the Netherlands?

Nuts, should have done an i16!
On the He112 front... Should learn to trust my instincts. This kit will kill me. I have a lovely little he112 except that the canopy does not fit. Full stop, total no hoper. I have sanded it to conform and carved it and, as it starts to fit down a bit it becomes clear that it is also too narrow.
If I could trisect it to display open this would help. But the plastic is many 32nds of an inch thick. The sliding portion would never ever fit over the rear section. Anyone know of a vac canopy? I can't find one.
This may yet be a restart on a ki-43.

Tough luck, Richard! Sounds like your options are limited. Have you tried Squadron vac formed canopies? I have found obscure versions in the past, but cannot remember if He 112 is one of them.
Another option would be to find a canopy that looks the same and can be adapted. not 100% accurate, but still sounds like an improvement over the kit supplied canopy!

I am sorry to hear about the problem with the He 112 canopy.
I've read some articles on the RS kit, and it seems that some people have had trouble with the canopy too.

Richard -
It appears as though some boxings of the RS He 112 came with a vac canopy. Perhaps you can contact Rs and request one.

That is a good idea. I may ask them about that.
Anyway I'm on to the fine molds ki-43 now. Will do manchukuo colours because they are clearly the best. Photos to follow.
Using the Eduard PE for the hasegawa kit wherever wherever it fits.
