Here is my entry to the Campaign. It is a Hobby Craft de Havilland DHC-3 Otter.

The Otter is a nice kit, Darrell. I flew in one of those out of Namao in 1967, while an air cadet. I still remember how smooth it was, although a fellow cadet had to use the bag.

Okay a little further along, cockpit built and painted, fuselage closed up wings on, landing gear painted and on. The nose for this aircraft isn't a good fit and quite a bit of fairing was needed with putty and plasticard strips.

There were sink marks in the plastic which needed filling, filing sanding and the process needed to be repeated at least twice. There has been some loss of detail but I'm going to try stretching some sprue very thinly and gluing the resultant thread onto the fuselage to replace the detail lost. Here are some [pics to see the progress so far.

Here is the starting photos of my build. I haven't decided if I will build it in Search and Rescue colours (yellow) or in transport colours (silver).


I also want to see if I can get the wheels down. Further research is needed.

Single Otters were never painted in the yellow rescue scheme, and the kit floats aren't amphibs so you'll need to do a little converting. Here's some inspiration.

This is the only Otter rescue scheme that I know of.

Okay well a little further along with the Mossie I've got her painted and the tops of the engine nacelles on. Now it's just a matter of sourcing the right decals for her codes and serials.

You are right Jessie it is the Twin Otters that are Yellow. I guess that it will be a silver and white colour scheme. Photos show that the floats have wheels so I will need to research more on them.

You do have the option to do the plain floats; they often flew with them, especially back in the '50s when the kit colour scheme was worn.

I like your Mossie, Chris. Quick job of it too. Well done.

Some update pics, tried a masking and using a rattlecan(Tamiya)approach, will see afterwards if I like it.

Hi, Robert. I've often used Krylon rattle cans for basic, solid color work. There's a slight learning curve to apply it without getting overly aggressive, but, the results are satisfactory. Never have tried a camo pattern, because the color matches just don't look right to my eye and I find the color varies from can to can as per production run.

My monitor tells me your spitfire looks quite nice. I suppose that you only know for sure in real life, though.

Thanks, I have been using rattlecans for a base coat for a while now. This is my first attempt at a mask and spray, but I need a bit of a touch up in places, that's why I asked about the conversion from rattle can to tamiya colours.

Hi Robert I've used Urban Fredriksson's colour charts for almost 15 years now they're my go to for colour matching and figuring out what paint I need to use for what colour I want to achieve. There maybe something there for you???

Sascha,my rest choice. I have that kit in the stash as well. It looks great and suspect it might be a hasegawa recoding, but I might be wrong. It has a hasegawa feel to it. It will be great to hear how it builds up. Please keep us updated on the build.

Thanks Ben and Jesper I look forward to getting started soon will be marking her up with the VFA 115 markings. am going to start off with the cockpit as this is my biggest trouble area other than painting and of course free time some good looking builds going on.
