So I managed to built my P-51 nearly to the finish. Here I have some pics while working on it.
I hope i get it finished with decals and varnish by end of the week.

Jan, that NMF looks really nice.
On my build, I'm pretty much finished, once my replacement decal gets here I'll be able to put on the varnish and call it done. I've got a little base coming this way to build for it too. I did some light weathering too, with a black wash and some pastels. I think I'm going to add some more pastels behind the exhaust and guns.

That one ought to be pretty easy to replace. Drop me a PM with your address and the diameter in mm and I'll look through my spares.

@Logan - I like that Brit Mustang of yours, always loved the D-Day markings! One fine day I should build one of those, too.

This one has been a blast to build Peter, I highly recommend the Revell kit!

I did the dredge last night. An embarrassment of riches. A Model News NA-73, a Condor A-36. and MPM F-6, An academy P-51C, a couple of Frog Mustang 1's, and a RS F-51H. Plus I'm sure that there is at least one D, all in 1/72 and probably an old Otaki 1/72 P-51D. Not to mention an F-82 Twin Mustang somewhere.

I have slowly chipped away at getting my kit started between working on other campaigns that end earlier. I laid down the initial interior colors, began adding the Eduard Zoom, and started detailing the resin seat. It's a start at least.

made some progress last week with my next one, the air racer RB-51 Red Baron.


Now there's some sanding waiting
The kit isn't all joy, every part needs reworking, but..that's the fun of it, too, isn't it? I will replace the kit propellers with some old ones from my spares box, should look ok. Weekend is coming, so I probably get further.

Tamiya 1/48 F-51D

I finished detailing all of the interior, adding the Eduard PE and TD seat. I removed the oxygen hose and replaced it with coiled wire for a better 3D appearance, and did some simple wiring for the radio rack. Everything received a wash of Tamiya Dark Brown Panel Accent and some drybrushed highlights. The 3 part instrument panel was assembled and sealed together with thick CA along the outside edge. I dabbed little drops of Testor's clear parts cement onto the gauge faces with a toothpick and topped them off with a bit of Future to really make them shine.

Next up, filling and sanding all of the panel lines in the wings plus working on the gear bays.

Alright, finished up my 1/48 Revell Mk.III Mustang! It was a fun build, I'd be excited to take what I learned from this one and build another one!




In person, it looks a bit dirtier and weathered, which I like.

my racer starts to look like Mustang now. Currently I got it primed and I'm working at the undercarriage doors to fit them in. As I wrote earlier, those parts need proper reworking. Will take a little while, then.

Tamiya 1/48 F-51D

I closed everything up and started cleaning up the fuselage seams. Suprisingly this one had a few fit issues I had to touch up. Nothing horrible, just a little Mr Surfacer here or there. I also filled all the proper panel lines on the wings top and bottom. This took two applications of Mr Surfacer to get perfect.


The wings all puttied up and ready to go. I also drilled out the guns so I can replace them with telescoping tubing.

I decided I would skip using resin wheels for this build and fix the kit plastic instead. Scott Miller makes mention of how to do this in a build he published. It was extremely easy to fix the kit wheels so you can see through the spokes properly. I wet sanded the back of the spoke piece with 320 grit until it was thin enough, and drilled out the circular openings on the other hub. I found a #64 bit to be a perfect fit for the circular openings.


Who needs resin?!

I made spacers to replace the lost thickness by punching card stock into tiny plastic washers that slide right onto the axle but are narrow enough not to show through the spokes. It took about 1hr to completely make over the plastic wheels to look as good as any resin set I've seen. I will definitely do this again.

I know that it may be a little late, but does anyone mind if I jump in too?
I visited the Duxford VE day air show recently and managed to pick up a Revell 1:32 scale P-51B Mustang III for £13 because it only had one of the two marking options it should have had when new, but everything else is there and seems to be in good order

Hello everyone. Some Funky builds going on here! I have a quick question: Does anyone have any idea what colour should I paint the cockpit of a Mustang III? It is in RAF service but as far as I know they are not British built, so I am in a kind of a dillema. On the other hand I don't trust Revell's instructions at all. I will start on an aircraft on the Italian based Mustang III option of the 1/72 Revell box.

So, I got my 'stang off the ground (pardon the pun) yesterday, here is where I'm at so far:

that's what I was going to have to contend with for some of the pilot's controls, they don't show too well in the photo, but there were quite a few bulges in the plastic (look at the verticals for those) and ejector pin marks - also, stage 1 of the wood floor prep


A little trimming and sanding goes a long way


Cockpit floor and seat, all weathered down, and with some small additions (masking tape seat harness and a head rest made from milliput)


The other side panel, again, fully weathered down with a bit of dry brushing and a little self-made brown wash type concoction


The instrument panel, I just painted this, then dry brushed over to show the instruments themselves, added a few red blobs to bits that should be red on the real thing, and a small yellow line painted around some of the instruments. After that I coated the whole lot in matt varnish, then blobbed some Humbrol Clear over the instrument faces to make them shiny, and a bit more life-like, not that it shows particularly well in the photo....just take my word for it

That's the lot so far, got some more pics, but they are not uploaded yet, and besides, this is way too long as is!

More to come, I would guess in about a week, as I will not get any time this week to do anything more

Tamiya 1/48 F-51D

I made some more progress this week. I finished sanding the wings and glued everything together finally. I had to use some evergreen shims along the wing roots, but the tailplanes fit perfectly. I added the guns from telescoping micro tubing, 1.0mm x 0.8mm x 0.6mm. I may have to clean up the leading edge around the blast tubes, primer will show if I left flaws. The 165gal drop tanks were taken from my spares, they are left over from Tamiya's P-47D Bubbletop with sway braces from Eduard's Hellcat. Next I need to prime everything, then assemble the rockets and landing gear while that cures. I am hoping the primer doesn't reveal a bunch of flaws I will need to fix.

it's been a while, so there is plenty of progress on the "Salem Representative". This might be a bit of a biggie...

Another of the small upgrades I have made to this kit - gun barrels. These are just small pieced of brass tubing cut to length, sanded smooth at the ends, and set into the wing openings using milliput. They look a whole lot better than a couple of rough holes, thats for sure


The final small upgrade I have made. I decided that the kit gun sight was utterly hopeless, way too small, and moulded from opaque grey plastic as a part of the instrument panel. This is a small piece of flash from the clear sprue which I have cut and sanded to size and shape, then glued to pedestal from the kit gun sight.


The kit canopy is a bit of a disaster, poor fit, and the lensing effect is terrible, but since I have no alternative, it will have to do. Careful filling is needed methinks...


Base coat of Humbrol metal cote aluminium, the prop, undercarriage, canopy and exhaust stacks are all coated in maskol, so don't worry, they are fine


Remainder of the painting is done, I decided to paint on the black bars instead of using the decals because I though it would give a better finish, therefore, if they are not straight, its all my fault

That is all so far, should be finished by tomorrow maybe, but if not then certainly soon
