Nice one Wayne

The Tamiya 1/32 Zero is a kit I dream of building one day...

No, I'm not envious...really I'm not...

All the best

:-) I've chopped off the wing tips, on my Val, and I'm thinning down the plastic to take the resin wing ribs. I've seperated most of the cockpit parts from their pour stubs, just the cockpit floor part to go. I had intended to paint the cockpit Bamboo green with the wing fold parts in Aotake, but I can't find my paint I had a tin each of Xtracolor. Anyone know the equivalant in Humbrol, Revell or Tamiya paints?

I posted this yesterday but it seems the thread has disappeared, so I'll repost it here...

I'm roughly half way through my Ki84, and so far its possibly the worst kit I've ever assembled, seems like theres a ton of gaps everywhere, and peices just don't seem to fit. Also theres a nice gap between the cockpit floor and the right side of the fuselage, so if you looked straight down into the cockpit you'd see the bottom of the wings, nothing a peice of plastic can't fix but still aggrevating. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew which colors the Japaenese used ot paint the top and bottoms of there airplanes? In the instructions just says "Dark green" and "Light Blue"...Any help appreciated.

Hi Mitch

The best place to look for info on Japesese WW2 aircraft and camouflage is j-aircraft - you can probably find the definitive answer there.

Hope this helps

Hi Mitch,
For those two colors I use the Model Master enamel #2117 IMP(Imperial) Japan Navy Sky Gray and #2116 IMP Japan Army Navy Green. Someone else might be able to let you know of the other brand's color matches if you don't use MM. paints.

Hope that helps and good modeling,
Wayne

Hi penpen

I haven't even decided what to build yet! Some of the guys will be finished before I get round to making a start!

It's great to see so much interest. I always hoped this would be a popular build. :-)

All the best

I'm having trouble getting started on mine. I have it all picked and am incredibly excited to do it, but have just had tons of things come up every time I think I will get a chance to start. So far I have just done a little sanding off part in the cockpit to make room for the PE set I bought.

You really don't have to worry about me getting done fast or before the rest of you. With the weather it is not very often here lately that I get to go out to the garage and really do any airbrushing. I did get some done the other day so now I am working inside on painting all the deatil work on the interior/cockpit parts. That should keep me busy for a while. :-)
I like everything to do about putting a model together. Whether it be painting the scheme, gluing parts together or whatever. But I think my favorite part is doing all the detail work in the cockpit. The engine on this kit is very detailed and I also ordered a pe detail set for the engine which should make that a lot of fun also tho. What about the rest of you? What is your absolute favorite part about putting a model together?

I was also wondering....all the engine parts are all ready silver plastic. How many of you would still go ahead and paint over the top of of that? How many of you would leave it as is? Is there any good points or bad points for doing it one way or the other? Any tips, hints, or advice is welcome.

Thanks and good modeling,
Wayne

hye wadware !
As far as I know, engines are not silver... and anyway sivered plastic often still looks like plastic... and not like metal. So that's why I would paint the engine.
Searching the web for pictures of a few radial engines will show you rather dark colors... even if I don't know the right color for the zero (black ?).

Funny, I just learned on saturday that the landing gear of the KI61 was often painted black, as on the zero !

Thanks Penpen,
That makes sense about it looking like plastic. I was definately leaning towards painting it and think I will stay with that.

Good modeling,
Wayne

:-) Wayne, plastic will always look like plastic, so I would always paint it. For radial engines, if I don't know the exact colours, I first of all paint them Xtracolor Burnt Iron, a wash of black, then drybrush with aluminium. The crank case will either be painted engine grey, washed with dark grey and drybrushed with a lighter grey and silver or aluminium. Or I paint it black and drybrush silver. The push rods are painted semi gloss black. I add ignition wires, sometimes, if they will be visable :-)

Thanks Mal
That really helps with the colors and seals the fate of the silver plastic parts.

I tend to work on my models alot, being as how I'm 17 and on the week days I don't have alot to do from 3pm till when ever I go to bed. I should probably spend more time and be patient, I'm sure they'd come out better. As for my Ki84, I've got the cockpit done, glued, the fuselage together, done, and vertical stabilizers on. Right now I'm waiting to get a few things for my new airbrush so I can try it out. Hopefully it comes out good :-)

Hi there

Well I think I've finally made my mind up! I'll probably have a go at FineMolds' Yokosuka (Kugisho) D4Y Judy. I should make a start next weekend.

All the best

Merlin, that's a GREAT choice !
To be honnest, I've got 2 waiting in the "unbuilt kit pile" ! So, I'll be very interested by what you say during the build !
Do you intend to work hard on the weathering ? Do you have a lot of ref pics ?
I know there's one in a museum in tokyo (museum about kamikaze), so it should be possible to have pictures of outside details...

Hi penpen

:-) I've got two of them as well... inline and radial engine versions. Of course I can't make my mind up which to build! Probably the inline... it just seems more like a Judy.

I've got a copy of "Broken Wings of the Samurai" by Robert Mikesh - which has some pics of suitably tatty examples, so I'll have a go at using salt to get the weathered look. Fingers crossed...

All the best

I was happily busy/stuck inside today and feel like I got somewhere on my Zero.
I got all the detailing/decaling done for the cockpit and a few of the other interior goodies such as the battery. I also got to actually glue a lot of the cockpit parts together and on the side walls
I really like the way the control panel is done in this kit. the dials are clear plastic parts which you put a decal on the back that lines up with the actual dials in the clear part. Then you glue the clear part into the back of the control panel. It looks just like glass dials and the decals look excellent!!
Once I get the cockpit fully assembled or to a really good looking point I'll have to post a few 'progress' shots.

Good modeling,
Wayne

Hi all,
Here are some shots of my Zero cockpit. These are small pics here but if you go to my gallery there are some good full size shots if you want to get a better look. I'll keep them posted in there for a while.

Hi Bus,

I have a quick question for you. I was checking out your gallery photos.
In your 'Cover Up' dio, what scale are the German mortar team characters.
That is a really cool dio.
