Welcome to the Canvas Falcons III: 1916-17 Campaign!

The campaign will run from November 12, 2016 through November 11, 2017.

One of the aims of the campaign is to promote WWI building. While I have removed the requirement to post your in-progress work in a blog on the Early Aviation forum with a link in this thread, such a blog is still encouraged if you feel so inclined. Please post your finished build photos in your blog and in the campaign gallery.

Late 1916 into 1917 is when the air war really heated up, so I'm looking forward to some great builds of aircraft of World War I to commemorate the centennial!

I am ashamed to admit that I didn't get my build for Canvas Falcons II going and missed that campaign. I'm trying to decide what to do for part III to make up for it and am wondering, do I dare?

I think I'll join with something simpler:


It was a decision between Sopwith Pup and Triplane, and latter "won" because it's more likely to remain unbuilt otherwise.

There are decals for one French, one German and three British planes. I'll probably build one flown by FHM Maynard ("13" with simple markings, April 1917) or the plane shown in box art (flown by three aces, August 1917).

It's been a while, but I'm back on a level in my life to get modelling again. Been two years or more since I left Europe to get me a new life. So to join this campaign is where I keep a promise, to build a WW I airplane on this site.
I want to build a Fokker DR.I if it is ok...for this campaign.
Eduard 8161 issued for a start into Aeroscale Campaign Noº1(for me).

Pasi: The Tripe Hound was my next choice if I don't get the gumption to do the Gotha. I have a WNW kit which I plan to build as one of Collishaw's a/c, and the Roden kit which I want to do as a Home Defense fighter to pair with the Gotha. We shall see how things go!

Hi all.
I have some questions about those magnificent kits from WNW. Nothing to say about the pricing, seems fair. It's more about the aftermarket that comes with almost every high level kit nowadays. What are the quality brands for these kits to upgrade and give it extra detail?

This weekend I'll kick off with my dual DR.1 build. Preparing my workspace to get it going.

Hi Robert,
I'm in the process of building my first WNW kit at the moment (Rumpler C.IV) and I'm finding it a fantastic build. They really don't need any aftermarket extras besides from rigging material. They all come with etch parts for seatbelts, gun jackets and occasionally other parts.
That's just my opinion of course. Others do go that extra mile and expense with sets from Eduard and HGW. They really do add that extra detail, but OOB they are already brilliant.

I firmly agree with Stephen, they're great kits from the box (except for the lack of rigging material). But I understand Gaspatch and HGW do very nice detail sets.

Adding aftermarket details to a model that is of a high standard that are hidden on completion is a waste of money.
It's a form of one upmanship ie "look how much money I have put into this build"
I have a HK 1/32 B-17 on order and I am probably going to do a cutaway build to show off the detail inside that would be hidden when sealed up.
A good build out of the box will satisfy the average modeler.
Rant over!

Thank you all for answering my questions. Leaves just one about the rigging. Do they also include turnbuckles with their kits when applicable?

They have some limited turnbuckles in the Eindekker kits but normally, no, no turnbuckles. If you want to go that far, I hear Gaspatch have very nice turnbuckles.

Like some of you I missed Falcons II but I'm in for this one with an Encore Fokker Dr 1 in Werner Voss's colours together with Model Cellar figure of the man himself. Looking forward to an interesting campaign. Happy thanksgiving to you guys on the other side of the pond.

Martin, building a triplane always sounds (and in fact is) quite challenging - but this kit looks promising. I'll follow up this one!

Yep love the triplane always have ever since I was a kid. Usually build in 1/48th so this is a slight departure for me. Especially the figure painting bit.
