Somewhat inspired by Magnus and his Aircraft collection I thought it might be fun (and maybe a little embarrassing for me ) to collate my completed aircraft models since returning to the hobby in around 2006...
These are all 1/72 scale kits from Airfix unless otherwise noted
First up a Spitfire Mk1 circa 2009. Airfix sure have come a long way in terms of panel line finesse since then.
Then a Sea Hurricane circa 2010
And a PRXIX spitfire circa 2011
2012 and I decided to have a little fun with Wallace and Gromit, obviously not 1/72 but 1/12
2013 and along came the Walrus
2015 a Spitfire MkIX
2016 the Defiant made its appearance
and just now in 2018 I finished this Typhoon...
Obviously I'll add to this page as I complete more models in the ensuing years.
Hopefullly you guys who are masters of aircraft won't laugh too much but maybe I am getting better at these things

Thank you Karl
Hopefully I have improved over the years (just as Airfix have)
I know it's not a large collection, as my main focus has been ships, but that will probably change next year and I aim to complete at least 3 aircraft

Russell! They are all beautiful and certainly NOT to be ashamed of! Keep on adding them ! How come you have standardised on Airfix by the way? (I could ask myself, I've done a fair amount of the new ones as well ).

Hi Magnus!
Thank you for dropping by and thank you too for your kind words! High praise indeed coming from someone with your skills
Why Airfix? I guess at first it was a bit of Nostalgia along with support for the underdog when Hornby began their initiative to renew Airfix's tool bank.
Then it became a matter of value for money, general accuracy and subject matter: you may have noticed I tend to focus mostly on WW2 RAF
Like others though, over recent years I've noticed the quality of Airfix's kits has really improved. Maybe not to Tamiya standard, but for my money they are more than acceptable. The Typhoon was a dream to build and I've recently added 2 more kits to my stash (not to mention the 1/24 bubble top I have residing there as well )
Of course this is not to say I'm 'exclusively' Airfix. I have my eye on an Eduard Fw190 at the moment and I'm keen to build Tamiya's P47 bubbletop "Jug"
All in all, though, I can only hope to get somewhat as good as you guys who are masters of the a/c scene and try to finish more than my standard 1 kit per year

Well, after a bit of a hiatus from wing things it seems I've planned to get as many finished this year (2020) as I can by signing up to numerous campaigns
To that end, here's the first entrant into the Bae-Sopwith-Hawker Campaign: Airfix's most recent 1/72 Hurricane offering.
After completing it, I hadn't planned on posting any pictures of it to the Aircraft Hangar Collection, owing to several areas of disappointment with the build, but after photographing it I thought, hey, why not?
So here she is, first of the many: first wing thing completed for this year; and first Hurricane that will cross the bench in the coming months!
Once again, thanks for looking

I've got another Airfix Hurricane on back order so that I can execute a better build and am planning to add some Arma kit MkII's to the collection as well so watch this space

You've got a nice little collection going here Russ, great to see this thread revived!
The Hurricane is up there with the P-47 Razorback and Boomerang as my favourite WWII single. A beautiful airframe.
You need to drop a photo of the Firebird in here, it's got wings on it too!
Cheers, D

Hi D! Thank you for your kind words... Hopefully over time, I can see improvement in my work, which is part of the reason for this blog.
Of course, now that Wing things are dominating my workspace I hope to ad a lot more in the ensuing months
Ah, the P47-D. Yes, me likey, but the bubbletop is top of my want list-that Tamiya kit in 1/72 of course, maybe one day Kinetic's 1/24!
As for the Thunder-Chicken, well, she's better off in the Garage

Russell! Why do we always overestimate our own modelling mistakes? In this case, they certainly aren't obvious in the photos (cleverly chosen photo angles ?) and it looks like a fine Hurricane to me! Reminds me of picking one of these up when I find it.
Well done Russell, Gladiator next in line?

I guess it's true: we're our own worst critics when it comes to assessing our own models.
Basically it comes down to several errors on my part: the camoflauge pattern isn't as clean as I'd like; the colours aren't in register (maybe something to do with the brand of paint, to be rectified on the next build by a different choice of paint brand); the decals didn't lay down neatly (my doing); and lastly the exhaust stain is vastly overdone.
All items which don't really show on photos. Lucky me
As for the Gladiator, well, that's in the queue, but first up a BF109E, Mustang & a Spitfire for the Big Three Campaign, then a Me262 for the Schwalbe Campaign and hopefully a do-over of a Hurricane at the same time, all before I start the Bi-Planes campaign with the Gladiator! Phew! I might even try to build a swordfish for it too!

Hi everyone!
I've just finished Airfix's 1/72 F Mk22 Spitfire for the Big Three campaign.
This has been an enjoyable build of a nice kit. Trailing edges were fine and panel lines appropriate for the scale... I've gone with a cleaner look for this aircraft as they didn't really see any action as such in WW2...
So on with the pictures for the 2nd one to make it out of the stash and onto the display shelf for 2020!
Thanks for looking

Russell! Nicely done Spit! A silver one was on my shortlist but I ended up with a camouflaged one instead. Anyway, a nice kit it is and I never thought there would be a mainstream Mk 22/24 in this scale!

The Walrus was a simple, but nice enough kit... I live in hope that one day Airfix apply their 1/48 treatment of the Walrus to 1/72 scale and release a new tool... Hopefully followed by it's contemporary adversary, the Arada Ar196

Hi Magnus Thankyou for stopping by... Agreed, this is a nice kit of one of the prettier marks of the Sptifire

I will add my agreement as well. Even with the clipped wings, bubbletop profile, 5-blade prop and cowl bulges, it is still unmistakeable and a beautiful airframe.
Great build Russ, well done!

A lovely collection you have here, Russell. You really not only have a soft spot for Airfix but also for RAF birds.
Your last Spit has come out beautiful. As I mentioned before, a silver Spit always looks special. And it's a Griffon-Spit. Far better sound than a Merlin....
Keep up the great work here!
Torsten

Thanks D. There is a certain elegance to the balance between form and function on this mark of Spitfire

Hi Torsten Thankyou for stopping by and checking out my aircraft builds
You are correct: I do seem to have a soft spot for RAF birds from Airfix... My stash is certainly dominated by red boxes I guess they have knack for combining topics that interest me with value for money... Although that is shifting away as Arma seem to be producing some great kits and Eduard and Tamiya have a couple of planes as well that are on my wishlist...
First, I must drain the stash, as they say, before I can spend any money on more kits

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...
Airfix's 1/72 Me262 built for the Schwalbe 2 Campaign
And of course this post wouldn't be complete without this shot, even if not entirely accurate
This brings to 4 the number of kits finished this year, 3 aircraft and one Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
And there's still a chance I might finish a couple more this year...
Thanks for checking in...
