another dio possibilty would be using the chinook on the ground with some marines running out of it.

How about a Mule fully loaded or with a 105mm recoiless rifle driving down the rear ramp. That might be an interesting dio.

Actually they would be Army troopers and maybe a M151A2 TOW. USMC does not use the Chinook, they use its cousin, CH-46 Sea Knight, and Army doesn't use the Mule.
Hooaahh!!

"....O.K......I'll be brave enough to ask the obvious.
Just how much work would it be to convert a CH-47 Chinook to a CH-46 Sea knight, or visa-versa??....."
Well, here I am quoting myself for a change.
Our good member HeavyArty was gracious enough to take the time to post this very question over at the FSM site to get some input from some of the fellas over there.......well, apparently most of the response's so far are lifting a hind leg on the idea
So, I guess for now, no 1/35th scale Chinook dio's until Trumpeter 'get's the lead out' and delivers their version to your LHS shelves.........and the 46?......on the distant horizon at best.
Tread.
EDIT: Heyyyyyyy, I've got an idea! What if we all start actively buying up all the 1/35th scale helo kits out there and when the model manufacturing companies see that the demand for such kits is SO high, they'll stop what they're doing and really crank up their 1/35th scale helicopter offerings !?!?!???
Just a thought.
It does make me think about starting up a 1/35th scale Helo-based Campaign, but the only problem with that is, the only members who would probably sign up for the bloody thing would be Gino and I................
Post Script: Although.........if Tiger101 can be persuaded to build a submarine, anything's possible! :-)

Also.....was somebody looking for Marine Chinook pics??
These are actually CH-46 Sea Knights, not CH-47 Chinooks.

I think it would be doable,
I don't think so. About the only thing common to these two aircraft is the fact that they both have the same rotor configuration. Other than that they are VERY different. Even in basic dimensions:
- fuselage length: Chinook 51 feet, Sea Knight 45 feet
- rotor diameter: Chinook 60 feet, Sea Knight 51 feet

With my current campaign commitments I would love to do a 1/35 helo campaign but, the time frame would have to be later in the year.

Howdy again fellas,
Thx for the clarification Vodnik, I initially did a search for CH-47 pics and came up with those. The original picture notations were designated "ch-47003.jpg" or somesuch......so I figured they were indeed 47's. I apparently should have looked a bit closer, I stand corrected.
And just to show I still love the idea of a Chinook dio, and, to follow up on Mr. Vodnik's attempt at showing possibilities for said dio, here's a couple more.....
All you would need for this first one would be a 1/35th scale refuleing aircraft. Talk about a BIG kit!! Of course, then we still have the problem of how to suspend them both
In this second shot, the dio would be much more feasible because 1/35th examples of the vehicles being slingloaded already exist, plus, you would have TWO places to suspend your hovering Chinook
Tread.
Oh, and Tiger101, I completely understand. I still might start this one up, if only to try to lure some of the gents over at FSM to spend some time over here....
And Gino......".....I got your back, bud......"
Thanks for the words of support. I was hoping you'd say something just-like-that.

Tread, I would definitely be in on this but not now for pete's sake. With the amount of good campaigns right now, I am going to be working nonstop for the next 4 months straight. Granted, I already have plenty of ideas for a campaign of this type... a hunter-killer team of a Kiowa and Apache in the Balkans, an MH-47 with rear ramp submerged picking up a CRRC in the Phillipines, a Cobra carrying a pair of SpecOps soldiers on the ammo door in Afghanistan (true story according to the Military Channel),... Ouch, now my head hurts.

Howdy Kyle,
Thx for pipin' in on this one. And, your set of dio ideas are superb! (especially the last one involving the Cobra. I'd really like more info on that one)
Believe me, I haven't given up on the idea of a 1/35th scale Helo-based Campaign as yet.....but because there are already so many other ongoing Campaign's, I just need to decide how to properly deploy it. After having ramrodded my "Incoming!!" Campaign I learned a few things. Lessons learned that I can add to my next Campaign and hopefully attempt to be half as successful as the membership here made "Incoming!!".
And just for the record, simply adding another Campaign is not the issue. Because I stand by my position of not limiting choices for anyone, but more to ensure that it has a justifiable audience, and one which can enjoy the 'ride'.

Tread, the story about the Cobra goes like this:
A group of US special forces soldiers are on patrol in the mountainous region near the Pakistani border when they are ambushed by a group of Taliban/al Qaeda. In the fray, the Taliban fighters slipped away, gaining ground on the operators who quickly followed in chase. Fearing they would lose the fighters across the border, the operators called in the only air unit around: a pair of Whiskey Cobras flying patrol. The pilot and copilot created a bench seat for the soldiers out of the gun ammunition storage bay door, strapping the soldiers to the seat. The pilots then ferried the operators, two at a time, up the mountain, where the SpecOps soldiers would catch the Taliban/al Qaeda fighters. There are pictures of the event as it happened, taken most likely by a SpecOps soldier waiting his turn. :-) However, I could not find them in any of my searches. I will watch for the program to come on the Military Channel again and will tell you if it does.
