Hi everybody
This is the second official tread for the Vietnam war campaign. This second tread has been made to make the forum run more smoothly.
I was planning to wait with starting the official tread until the campaigns were up and running. However, since we do not really know how long that will take, I thought I might go ahead anyway and start them up with the details of the campaign in the first post.
Let me know if you are ready for some fighting in sunny Vietnam
I will be running this campaign with some help from Nigel. Here are the general rules of the campaign:
Operational overview
The Vietnam War spanned a long time period from the first French skirmishes in 1946 to the final communist victory in 1975. During this 30 year period technology developed rapidly during the course of the war to solve new and unique problems encountered by US and French forces on the ground. Development ranged from the first WWII vintage French fighters strafing the jungle to the laser guided bombs of the F-4 Phantom IIs taking out bridges in the North.
The conflict in Vietnam saw the use of the helicopter on a mass scale for the first time both as a transport and as a gunship. The aircraft used in the conflict ranged from the small FAC spotter aircraft to the massive B-52. The air forces in North Vietnam used advanced MiG fighters to intercept and engage US aircraft bombing key targets in North Vietnam.
Rules and Regulations
This campaign is supposed to concern all aircraft used in the Vietnam conflict from 1946 to 1975. The aircraft could be from any country participating in the Vietnam War.
To qualify the aircraft must have been used in Vietnam and should be represented in the camouflage and markings that were used in Vietnam. For example a MiG-21 should be in North Vietnamese camouflage and markings, not East German.
Due to the long time span of the conflict and the various assignments undertaken by especially the US air force, US marines, US Navy, and US Army the aircraft that can be build are almost endless.
Here are some examples of planes that would fit into this campaign:
F8F Bearcat
Spitfire F.IX
C-47
F-105 Thunderchief
B-52 Stratofortress
AC-130 Gunship
UH-1 Huey
CH-47 Chinook
F-4 Phantom II
MiG-17
MiG-19
MiG-21
Douglas A-1 Skyraider
A-4 Skyhawk
But remember all should be in camouflage and markings from the Vietnam conflict.
There are many more airplanes that qualify than the above examples. If you have any doubts, just ask.
Dioramas and figures are welcome. All scales are fine.

Hi all!
Everybody Is making really nice models for this campaign!
Wiz, I love that F-4 in the SEA Cammo!
But lookout, here comes the enemy, fast approaching!
I have been working hard on my MiG-17F, and here´s a small update.
I have glued the cockpit and the turtledeck behind the seat in place.
Excellent fit made It really easy, just drop it in and secure with CA glue.
Then I had to put some weight in the nose.
This kit is a dedicated tailsitter so I needed LOTS of weight to keep her down.
Finally after the original weight and six(!) additional steel bars of about the same seize, she rested securley on the nosewheel.
Then I could close the fuselage and add the landing gears.
Finally, she could stand on her own wheels for the first time!
Progress is fast now, not much to add before the decalling can start!
Cheers!

Good to see that so many people are making progress on their builds.
@Stefan: Looks good - very good result on the camouflage scheme - looks just like the original scheme
No problem. You can easily enter your vigilante in the campaign. Good to have your onboard

Hi,
Is a NA RA-5C Vigilante in one of the experimental scheme(2-tone green on top surface and light grey undersides) deployed to Vietnam, eligible for this campaign?

Thanks for the comments earlier. Been out of town a fair bit so have only managed to do small bits here and there. I've hit a bit of problem as well; the decal for the red and white markings on the canopy's port side moved whilst setting and is now half on the fuselage. I am going to try and repaint this on...
nice MIG and Vigi guys! Can't wait to see what the Vigilante looks like when complete.
Cheers

Thanks guys,
The ra-5c is almost done. The top pattern and starboard side is more like guess work. I have only seen pictures of the port side... Anyway, here r some updates. Now only left the 4 fuel tanks and some minor details. Looks like I could finish in time..

Jesper,
I am hoping to make use of the coming holidays to finish it.
This is the pic i base the camouflage on.
By the way, the kit is an old Airfix 1/72. Raised panel. Should have bought the Trumpeter kit.

Hi All!
More progress pics of my MiG-17F.
Finally, I could mask it up and give the model a clear coat.
When dry I applied the decals, they come from Aeromaster and went on without a hitch.
A black wash and a satin top coat and I finally could remove the masking.
Then it was time to add all those sticky out bits, before I could call It done!
Yes, My Mig-17F "Fresco" for the Vietnam Campaign Is finished!
More pics in the Gallery!
Cheers!

@Ken: thanks for sharing the colour scheme of your build. I can see why you found that one interesting.
@Stefan: Great MiG with very attractive markings and camouflage. It will look good in the crosshairs of my Phantom II.
Another fine model from you Thanks for participating. I hope you enjoyed it.

I'm finialy going to get started on my campaign entry, the family will be busy this weekend and I'm home alone Sooooo I will start my UH-1C, Marine Huey. I'll be using Academys 1/35th UH-1C kit, I'm not sure what markings I'm doing...but I'm leaning towards the Huey in the pic with red/yellow tail coloring.

Ok I already ran into a problem, see the decals I had for this build turned out bad and cracked. I have nothing to replace them with. What I need is a set of white "Marine" decals...2inch by 1/2inch.
So for a backup I'm building a old Revell 1/72nd CH-54 Sky Crane. I just look over the kit, man is it ever full of flash. It's going to take up the whole night cleaning it up Oh well it'll look great. Progress pics soon to follow.

Sorry to hear about the markings, Joe. Could have been cool with the yellow/red Huey. Anyway, a sky crane will be a great and unusual addition to the campaign.
Are you going to strap a 105mm howitzer or something similar under it?
Looking forward to see more.

Joe-
Is that the Huey book from Squadron Signal by Lou Drendel? Looks like a similar layout to the Squadron Airmobile book I have. Bummer about the decals. What about using dry transfer lettering?
