HGW have announced a new system they're calling "Wet Transfer" that could revolutionise how we apply markings, combining the convenience of decals with the advantage of having no carrier film, thus giving the painted-on look of masked markings:
"So,what is so special about the picture above? You can see our latest innovation there, we call it WET TRANSFER. It is something like ordinary decal but it is not so ordinary actually. This stuff do not leave any signs of varnish, glue etc. After few hours, when stencil get dry, it is possible to remove the transfer foil and only text or symbol will stay attached at the surface. Another great thing about that is that it is possible to polish or varnish the places where are these transfers placed without limits.

The biggest issue relating to using ordinary decals is the varnish which creates a glossy film around the decal. It is quite hard to work with classic decals the way to make this film invisible and it is impossible to reach a good result in case of metallic surfaces. OK, there are dry transfers on the market but work with them is also quite uncomfortable, it is hard to place them correctly and a modeller has the one chance only.

HGW's wet transfers are similar to ordinary decals. It is possible to move them during the attaching process and find the best position. Then just push the water from below the transfer, let it dry few hours, remove the transfer foil and work is done. Only text or symbol stays attached to the surface.

Instructions:

1. Cut the required part.
2. Soak in hot water and wait till the decal loose its base-paper.
3. Apply as regular decal.
4. Push the water from below the decal.
5. Let it dry for 2-3 hours.
6. Remove the transfer foil and clean the glue stains with water."

It says "transfer foil". Are you able to see the decal positioning through the material? This looks like a very interesting product.

Hi Russ I have the same sort of questions in mind. I'm really keen to try this new system out, because it could (I repeat could) just be the best of all worlds; easy to apply like conventional decals, but offering the advantage of no carrier film like dry-transfers or masked markings (without the hassle of the latter (says he who bought a plotter/cutter to make his own masks! LOL!)). All the best Rowan

Looking at their website and reading the instructions it would seem that the decals are similar to Letraset with the decal printed on the reverse of a top sheet and backed with paper. This means you can see the decal when placing as it is just the backing paper that is removed to begin with. Foil is just a term HGW use for the top sheet. Looks interesting

This could certainly be the way forward for stencil data, and I can see it replacing conventional decals. But will it catch on. Hannants (I think it was) used to have a similar system for their decals, Xtradecals? I should still have some of their colouerd stripes somewhere.I have never seen it mentioned? This deserves to catch on and it will help me with my Paint Masks; the requirement for the actual painted look will increase and conventional decals will, finally, be consigned to history and the only way to get the actual scheme that you want will be via paint masks I hope that they do a bunch of stencil data in 1/32, I need some for the Bf110

Hi Mal The Xtradecal stripes I have are conventional decals. I've asked HGW if they intend producing full sets of national and unit insignia. They already include Luftwaffe national markings, so that would be a logical next step - along with Wet Transfers for armour and other types of models. All the best Rowan

Shipping may hurt, but this looks like a must have.

The idea is an old hat. I have used FCM decals for the Albatros D.V and I was not impressed. the baking paper sticked better to the decals than these to the surface. I could not use softener and the decal was stiff and brittle. Might be Herrman Göring has something better in the Works, but I have to see it actually work before I get hilarious... all the best Steffen

Hi Steffen I guess the only thing to do is to get some and try them out. I'm excited by their potential. I imagine this us is a development of the technology used in the HGW fabric surfaces decals that Jean-Luc reviewed a few years ago:https://aeroscale.kitmaker.net/review/5195 All the best Rowan
