UK hobby shop chain Modelzone has teamed up with Revell to produce a special limited run of the Revell 1/48 scale P-47N Thunderbolt.
Modelzone has previously collaborated with die-cast model vehicle manufacturers, but this is the first time they have commissioned a styrene kit, with a special run of 3,000 Thunderbolts.

Revell's P-47N first appeared 10 years ago and scores over the Academy version with a more accurate engine, propeller and ailerons. The kit was first moulded in silver plastic, but this edition is produced in mid grey. Otherwise, the kit is unchanged, with decals included for 2 aircraft:

1. "2 Big And Too Heavy", 333 FS, 318 FG, Ie Shima, May 1945.
2. "Expected Goose", 463 FS, 507 FG, Ie Shima, May 1945.

The P-47N isn't on Revell's current production schedule, so Modelzone's run is a very welcome chance to grab this well-regarded kit.

The P-47N is available in Modelzone stores across the UK or via their website for £12.99.

Hi Steffen State of the art? - maybe not quite, but it was a well-received model when it was released in the '90s. The panel lines are engraved (although they seem faintly "soft" compared with Revell/Monogram's other kits of the era) and the kit is generally well detailed. Detail & Scale point out that the instrument panel is undersized, but that the cockpit is otherwise better than the Academy kit - and Revell's P-47N also scores in other areas as outlined in the News item. Mal showed how nice the kit can look with his build a few years ago: All the best Rowan

Hi Steffen I'll review the kit if I get a chance, but one nice thing I've spotted is that the new release is actually rather better moulded than the original, which suffered some flak at the time with criticism over sink-marks. Comparing the sprues shows these problems are absent from the latest boxing. All the best Rowan

Modelzone at Southampton UK are currently selling this at £7.99. I've just bought one and can confirm that the molding quality seems better than reports for the original. Panel lines all look sharp and the sink marks reported in older reviews are not a problem here. I also saw mention of a horrible mold line on the bottom of the wing that require a lot of sanding and rescribing - once again there's no evidence of this problem here. Decals look well registered and good, with a caveat that the naked nose art decals are a bit indistinct (but you can clearly see the main features - if you know what I mean!). I'm a complete Aeroscale newbie (this is my very first posting - yay!), but I'll try to add further comments on this kit once I get it 'under the knife'. I must admit, the £7.99 price tag was the deciding factor for me, I've always been scared off by metallic finishes, but at this price I can afford to make a few mistakes (except it looks such a nice kit I really hope I don't). Happy modelling!!
