Hi Eetu.
From references I have to hand,(Im still out on tour),the majority of bombs carried on the P47's were 500lb GP bombs.I have seen photos of Thunderbolts with clusters of smaller bombs being carried on the fusalage, fixed in the same position as the drop tank would be. I think,(havent been able to check and confirm this),that they were capable of carrying a 1000lb bomb under the fusalage.
Ive seen photos of P47's with a 500lb bomb under one wing and a drop tank on the other, and Ive also read that the standard drop tanks were fitted with detonators to explode the remaining fuel when they were jetisoned on contact with enemy fighters, and even filled with napalm on occasion.
Hope this helps a little
Nige

Thanks.
I don't quite know what size are the bombs included in Revell's D-thunderbolt. To me, it doesn't look fat enough to be a 500-pounder. Can you make a guess from the box art?

Sorry, my dad's got the camera with him at our summer cottage, and his coming back next week, so I can't really post pics. (unless I resort to my nokia 6630 and it's gadget also sometimes marketed as a camera...)

Terve Eetu!

Never trust the boxart for reference ( ), though I love It for inspiration!

Standard load on P-47`s seems to be 500lbs bombs (or smaller), so I think you can use the bombs supplied.
I don´t have that kit (72 is too small for my eyes nowadays! ), so you have to decide what to use.

I believe the center rack was mostly used for tanks, the "keel" contains plumbing, I´m very uncertain If bombs could be carried on this station.
I will check my references and answer this question later!

Cheers!

I overcame many of my decal problems with the use of microsol set and some more varnish. The end result is fairly satisfying for me.

The markings on this aircraft is very cool. Tank kill markings on the tail and infantry assault badges on the side of the fuselage and on the nose. The infantry assault badges were painted on as the pilots used most of the time flying and fighting just above the ground. I really like that detail.

The shades of green mich be a little on the light side, but I am still quite proud of this one. After all I still have not build that many aircraft - yet

Hi Stefan and all.
I have photos in my reference books of P-47's loaded with 500lb bombs and also clusters of smaller bombs on the centre/fusalage rack.

Hi all!

Jesper; Your Hs-129 turned out very well.
Good job!

Lampie;
Thanks, I found some pics too that confirms that the centre rack could be used for bombs!

Eetu;
Your P-39 turned out great, and so did your P-47!
It looks very good in the French scheme!
Well done models!!

Cheers!

Thanks for the compliments, and the reference pointers too.
I'll probably take off the drop tank and hang one of the smaller bombs to the fuselage rack then. Good that I don't have to start fitting the wing pylons on. First of all, their fit wasn't the greatest (in fact the only fit problem I encountered with the whole kit), and secondly, I have filled the mounting holes and re-opening them would be tricky.

Thanks, Stefan. Appreciate it

@Eetu, glad that you will be able to solved the drop tank vs. bomb issue. Maybe those German panzers will not be so happy about it, but that is another story

When the campaign's over?

Oh, I had almost compeletely forgotten to upload approriate pics to the campaign gallery. Well, that's fixed now. You can find my P-39 there.
I still have to finish my Thunderbolt with a bomb to make it an entry, though.

As Eetu pointed out - we need to reach the finish date first

So far it seems like everybody will make it within the allowed timeframe without extensions, so at the start of August.

Well!! That made my day I had thought I ordered the Eaglestrike decals for my Hurri IID,but found out by accident 6 days later that they don't exist anymore! So! I have just finished putting the last EagleCals marking on the AC. Had to use the P-40 Tomahawk IIB set to get the nice Desert Air Force marks. Kudos to Squadron for the bailout! Seal ,weathering, and some piccys and I should make the due date no problema.

I was fearing that removing the drop tank might ruin the locating pins on the fuselage rack but it came off very nicely.
Here's the bomb with decals applied minutes ago.

I filled the old mounting holes with superglue and drilled new ones so it'll fit the to rack. Mr. surfacer was used to make a rougher cast-metal surface.

Hi Eetu, looks good.

The mr. surfacer actually worked pretty well. Maybe I should use it on some of my tanks over at Armorama as well

Looking forward to see your bird ready to knock out Panzers

Hello Everyone

What great bunch of builds that everyone has done for trhis campain.

Here are some shot of where my P-47 stands at the moment. I haven't been able to dedicate the amount of time I would like building, but I should be done by the end.

I gave up on the idea of adding the full invasion stripes, but the gun bays will remain open for all to have a peek inside.
Just have the decals to installand weather her and she should be done.
I hope you like it.

Hi Ted

Looks very good. It is definently ready to knock out some panzers with that impressive load.

Looking forward to see it finished.

Hi all!

Realized It was some time since I did an update on the P-47!

Yes, I have been quite busy with this bird!

After the engine was done I mounted It on the plane and the cowling followed quickly.

Then It was time for the paint shop, first color was the white bands and underlaying for the red rudder and cowling.

Then come the "fun" part, measuring and taping the invasion bands!

It took almost an afternoon, but finally the tape was on;

I had to attatch the flaps (without glue!) so I could get the stripes to match up.

Black was up next for the bands and red for rudder and cowling;

More masking before the underside color went on.
I decided to do this model with and all NMF underside, so I used Alclad II Aluminium.
More masking to protect the underside of the stabs and the black bands, and I could paint the Ocean Grey topside.

I could hardly wait for the grey to dry before I sparyed on the peculiar and quite strange pattern of Dark Green.

As soon as I could I removed all masking from the model.
Now THIS is the really fun part of the painting process!

All masking had worked perfectly and I had no creeping paint, just a small lift-off spot on one flap.

So now It´s all down hill, a clear coat and we´re ready for the decalling!

Cheers!

Hi Stefan!

Very nice! I think you can be very proud of the result! I can't wait to see the decals on it, that's my favorite step when building a model...

Hi all!

Jean-Luc and Jesper, I can´t let you wait so here´s my P-47 all dressed up for the party!

@ Eetu, your P-47 really looks good in that French cammo!
Great job!

Now, here´s some pics of my P-47!

First I painted a smooth, nice gloss coat to prepare for the decals.

Then came the fun, and my favourite part of a build, the decalling!

This area of the model took me almost three hours to decal!

Mucho trouble here, the stars-and-bars had to go on first as this determines where to place the other decals.
The trouble started with the top stripes as they did not have enough curvature to follow the fuselage, resulting in a very bad fit!

I don´t like the color of the insignias either, I think they are way too blue and bright!
But the worst part was that the decals are VERY translucent, as you can see here on the wing!

A quick phonecall to my good friend Lasse solved most of the problems (many thanks, mate!) as I could borrow his decal sheet.
With this I could lay a second decal over the first, and now it worked much better!

I had no use for the decal wing bands, so I used them to cut "Fillers" to add some thickness and opacity to the decals, layer after layer.
But finally she was decalled, after a great deal of cut´n´pasting, and some very foul language!

I have a set with techmod decals, but that did not fit the model, so I had to stick with the kit decals.

If any of you want to build this kit, get new decals, and don´t buy Techmod´s!

Cheers!

Great job on the decals, Stefan. I can see and read you have been through hell and back with those.

The end result is very good.

Hi Todd

Sounds great

Sorry, but you have to display at least one rocket, bomb or 30mm + cannon on your aircraft for it to qualify. In your case this would obviously be either bomb(s) or rocket(s).

Looking forward to see your bird.
