Yes, this tamiya kit is veru good. If I were you I´ll buy the aires kit. It´s excellent. It has the complete engine, flight deck and radios compartment.

One question: have you checked the time frame of the original you want to represent?

In general for Bf 109E RLM 02 in the cockpit is a bit more likely than 66 .. but all depending on the timeframe ... the orders for the change came somewhere in 1941 (I always forget when) ...

I'd go with Steffen for the RLM 02 cockpit overall, with a '66 control panel, for that date. I'd be very interested to know if you find references to indicate otherwise. (Beware of the ex-Spanish 'E'1 in the Deutsches Museum, which seems to have been repainted.)

Well, just as you like. I personally think it is most likely 02, but for late Bf 109E and early Bf 109Fs it could be both...

the paint was applied with my then new Gabbert Triplex (airbrush) with the smallest needle/nozzle and the spatter nose at a low pressure and medium "thick" paint (i.e. not very thin).

It will be an interesting build to follow.

Jakub Plewka in his Messerschmitt Bf 109E issued by Kagero tells us that at the beginning all interior used to be painted in RML 02 but from the end of 1939/ beginning of 1940 they star to use RLM 66. There are also photos of cockpits where you can see that RLM66 were used instead of RLM 02.

If you can definitely buy Kagero's monograph. Steffen, I didn't get decals in my copy

I bought the English edition (but when they were sold for 9 Euro each) .. seems nowadays only the English editions include the goodies (though I would prefer if every time decals were included and no masks or colour chips like in the air minature booklets)

As for the interior colour. One of the best books is Kenneth Merricks 2 vol "Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings 1933-1945". (I do not have my Ullmann ring binder here, so I cannot check that but I can hardly believe there is a difference as both stem from LDv.521).
In Merrick Vol.1 Appendix B you find the Interior Colours: RLM 02 (in different types of paint) was widely used from 1938 inside aircraft (pg 207 4th paragraph). but 66 was used for instrument panels (pg 207 5th paragraph). With the new LDv 521/1 from November 1941 (!) RLM 66 was ordered to be used on all surfaces visible from the outside (pg 207 9th paragraph). I like to add, that there may be differences when the orders were put into production.

I did not read the whole appendix now so I might have missed something but these are the facts i already mentioned above and I do not think this will change reading the whole book. There are always exceptions to the rule and if you can prove that with pictures it is really nice. In my book most/nearly all Bf 109 E should be RLM 02 in the cockpit.

The E series went into production in 1938 (Schick/Radinger: Messerschmitt Me [sic!] 109; Alle Varianten von A bis E, Aviatic Verlag 1997; pg. 78 f.) The production of the Bf 109 E phased out on all manufacturers between January and March 1941, last machines delivered in June (Schick/ Radinger pg. 104). Of course there came some more rebuilt airframes from the Industrie-Instandsetzung were machines with more than 60% damage were rebuilt and thus I think it is possible that there might be some in 66, but having read that I think even Pingel's E-7 is 02 in the cockpit area and the dark appearance just an optical illusion. i will paint it accordingly.

I've talked to Jakub Plewka, author of the Kageros publication, he said that Wick's Emil (W.Nr. 5344 ) should be painted all in RLM 66.

@Daniel: I can fully understand that you do not want to change and I would probably do the same in such a situation. In the end only a few will recognize and the pit looks really nice!

@Marcin: Well, your last comment is not very helpful for our discussion, though it might help Daniel to live with his decision.

Of course I accept that you absolutly (unconditionally) trust Mr. Plewka's statement!

I do not to this extend. I would prefer to have some info on what this statement is based. I checked Herbert Ringlstetters book on Helmut Wick (Motorbuch) and seemingly he flew 5344 for quite a while (from Staffelkapitän to Kommodore) at least from mid/late 1940. So why should it have a RLM66 pit ... just from the LDv.521 point of view.

There are also a few pictures from the cockpit area and from these pictures I (personally) am not able to decide if it is 66 or 02. So I might well be wrong but I still firmly believe the Bf 109 E cockpits came almost all painted RLM 02 from the factory.
