G'day all, I found a photo of a P-47 on skis while browsing a couple of books today, and I thought it might make a good campaign idea, anything with wings but it must be on skis !!

I suppose a campaign such as this would require some research and a fair degree of scratchbuilding as well.

I apologise for the quality of the pics but I'm sure they get the idea across. This will certainly be my build if we get this one off the ground (sorry 'bout that).

What thoughts have ye all ??

Cheers, D

Dunno Damian. You might get more takers if you went with a winter scheme instead of just skis. Something like an Eastern front campaign or Battle of Stalingrad or something. Just a thought.

I think its a great idea Damien and should be as you say, ski's only. Like we disscussed over in another thread, its good to get out of the comfort zone and build something different to what you normally would. The P-47 with skis looks good with the skis

I'd go for it, if the time is right, been looking for an excuse to build an I-16, all I have to do is figure out how to get it on skis.

Thanks for your interest guys, timing wise it would have to be a late 2010 start with all the other builds going on right now. I will find some more photos in my vast library to post here and stir things up. Please feel free to do the same.

Cheers all, D

As an avid builder of Swedish aircraft, I'll be darned if I couldn't find a possible entry for this campaign. Just about all aircraft in the Swedish Airforce prior to Saab Tunnan were fitted with skis.

For some reason, and even though I'm not the WWI type of guy, I've always wanted to build a diorama inspired by this picture;

Maybe it is the beauty of the Avro 504? Maybe it is just the facionable tricorne hats of the ground crew?

Anyhow - I can't promise that I will be able to partake in this campaign, given the limited time that I have at my disposal. It all depends on the timeframe.

Ps. If I was not stuck on Swedish (and Israeli) subjects, I would seriously consider this as an entry:

It does NOT get any cooler than this! (Please prove me wrong)

I am on - although I have no idea what to build yet. Maybe the Eduard I-16s include skis.... a beer keg on skis. That would be a sight!

Hi Damian

That's a very neat theme for a campaign. I'd definitely try to join in.

All the best

Hi JP, glad to see you here !

What if's are a definite go'er, I'm sure we can come up with some wild ideas if we dig into the stash. Some purists might get somewhat offended though, Imagine the uproar if we turned out a 110 night fighter or a Gloster Meteor.

As I said earlier, if we all dig into the archives there are probably a lot of one-off and experimental versions on film. I think we should give this theme a long build-up to get the creative juices flowing !!

Thanks for your support guys,

Cheers, D

Okay guys, pour yourself a coffee (or something stronger), sit back and Google "aircraft with skis fitted" . . . . .

Hmmmmmmmm, food for thought

I will see your Avro 504 and raise you a Norwegian Gladiator with the narliest snowsocks I have seen, produced in Poland. According to the story the Poles inoviced the Norwegian goverment just before the German invasion in 1940. Tru to German efficiency the invoice was of course paid in full later on

Smashing that's two good reasons for building then. I seen the funniest thing somewhere online here. The Royal Antarctic Air Force. With a penguin instead of a Roo or Kiwi in the roundel. Perfect for skis.

JP you are on a winner, my P-47 will have the RAAF Great South Expeditionary markings (Penguin in Roundel), over weathered white overall paint. Perhaps the nose art might be modified to reflect the climate, a warm pair of Ugg boots perhaps ??

Keep the ideas coming !!

Great idea for a campaign. If its skis only I know I have an Accurate Miniatures IL-2 on skis in the stash. If its winter on the other hand then the options are endless

Oh, and if anyone fancies what-ifs, on the 21st Dec we are starting the "Let It Snow" group build on the what-if forums. We currently have a 12 page inspiration thread going on, well worth taking the time to check it out

You may need to be logged in to see some of the pics, and for those who care, I shall be building an F-22J in the JASDF Arctic Aggressor scheme

I agree, certainly worth a look for some camo inspiration. Thanks for the link Neil.

Anybody come up with some more unusual shots yet? I'm not even sure what some of these critters are but they sure look cool . . . .

OOPS . . .

Hi all, just a bump to keep this idea in everyone's mind !! With christmas on us and 40+ (celcius) here in Melbourne I'm sure you guys in the Northern Hemisphere are neck-deep in the white stuff, so Ski's must be on your mind anyway.

I'll just keep bumping this thread until we get enough takers.

Another very subtle bump, we have 13 interested in this one. Now I need some input on the rules and regs. My thoughts:
November start date (just in time for the start of our summer, I need thoughts of snow to cool me off) and 8 month duration.
Any nationality, Any scale
What-ifs allowed for aircraft and markings
Snow Skis only, NOT rocket sled on sand or salt-flat skis
Campaign Title "Winter Wonderland"

A snow-base diorama will gain you extra accolades.

Any coments or feedback very welcome.

Cheers, D

Sounds like an ideal start date for me, post-UK nationals. Great excuse to build my AM Sturmovik on skis
