Hey trendsetters!
Here are some progress shots of my tiny little Airfix 1/72 Auster Antarctic.
The original skis, as you can see in the photo, where a tad too thick ,,,
So I made some new ones from the remains of a PE fret which was just the right width for the skis.
Sorry the photos aren't the best but it is just so small compared to my 1/32 builds my camera needs a macro lens!
Colour goes on tomorrow after I have filled the gaps in the badly fitting canopy. It had 'Airfix 1959' on the inside of one of the wings and absolutely no interior except for a radio set (I think) and a pilot. No seats or anything else. Luckily you won't see much once it is all finished.
Oh, and the prop had been very badly moulded and I had to remove the blades and reattach them in a slightly more realistic pose...
Till next time.. Same Bat time, same Bat channel...

Ok, who are you and what have you done with Warren ???
1/72, methinks you are an imposter !!
Nice touch with the PE fret though, whoever you are.
Ok, now that I have finished my Anti-Shipping build I can focus on the SkiBolt for this Campaign, and maybe we can drum up a couple more enlistees along the way. I have the P-47 assembled and the glass masked, ready for paint, so I'll post a couple of pics of pre- and post-painting tomorrow.
Cheers, D

Warren, are You runnig out of space at home ? You know You can tell us, theres no shame in that... I myself have troubless in fitting all those beautifull big bombers in 1/48 into my small flat. But somehow there is alway space for a nother one, You just need to put all the other unimportant stuff like beds, chairs atc. away

My idea for a ribbon. Might be too small to tell what it is though.
Darker sky to make the snow stand out more. Also thicker wings and gear.

In a previous life I used to build 1/72 exclusively, then I discovered how good 1/32 is and sold 95% of my 1/72 stuff, but I still have lots of 1/72 leftovers. Most of them are large bombers or transports, but there are some aircraft you just can't get in 1/32 that fascinate me.. including this little jigger...
Should have it finished today, time permitting.

Very nice Gary, I was thinking of something along those lines, an aircraft with skis and skipoles, but just haven't got to doing it.
Is everybody happy with that ribbon, or are there any other proposals ?

Ok, some progress pics as promised from your negligent Campaign Leader !
Basic assembly complete
Neutral Grey (as primer and underside colour)
Olive Drab, faded by adding yellow and varying spray coverage
It's quite warm here today, so I'll give it a couple of hours to dry then a coat of future.
Cheers, D

Greetings fellow skiers!
Well, it is finished as far as I want to go. The decals turned out to be a bit disasterous as anytime I went to put one of the small stencils on they seemed to want to disintegrate. I saved about 90% of them and the others can be forgotten about.. I know I already have!
This is Airfix's 1959 Auster Antarctic reissued in the last 10 years or so. I am sorry but I wouldn't really recommend it as it is not that accurate and would take a ton of work to make it even like the one on the box top.
Model on!

Warren that's a bright little gnat you've built there, just watch it doesn't land inside the intake of one of those 1/32 jets you're building !!
Nice job mate, and thanks for joining the snow party, even if you were only here for a day or two !!

Decals on, Aeromaster "The Russians are Here! Part II" set #48-642. I really like Aeromaster decals, they have never given me any grief at all.
A day to let them dry, then another shot of One-Go, then it's time to white-wash !
Cheers, D

Spoke too soon, I tried to mask for the whitewash today with blue-tac and thin card, and when I went to reposition on mask the decal came off with the blue-tac. Not the fault of the decal, I don't think I put enough Future on. Luckily there were plenty of options on the decal set so I put some new markings on today. I will put 2 or 3 good coats of future on before I try again.
Oh well, you live and learn.

Tough luck, Damian. Good to hear you had some extra decals left over.
Looking forward to see your recovery of the kit.

Ok, markings version II
and whitewash
I'm still not overly happy with the markings but they will have to do. I will give it a few more coats of clear and a bit of dirtying up and get to work on scratchbuilding the skis.
Paul, your build is looking great, I love the scheme !!
Cheers, D

That is neat, I know Finland used a huge assortment of aircraft, but didn't know the Lysander was one of them. Knowing the Finns one of their pilots probably became an ace in one.
Ski's didn't initially do much for me, but seeing all the great work in here, I think I'd like to join in. I've got a 1/72 PM Fokker DXXI with the option for a skis with Finn markings.

Paul, beautiful clean build, very nicely done indeed !
Aaron, welcome to the chillzone, thanks for joining in. Looking forward to your build.
I really must get on to the ski's for this build. I've had one attempt and I'm not too happy, so I'll make some adjustments to the dimensions and try again.
Cheers, D

thanks AussieReg and vonHengest,
the one thing i wanted to make sure of was that the the white backgrounds to the national markings didn't get lost in the white camo.
i have an original picture of this aircraft and its suprisingly clean,no camo showing thru and very little in the way of panel line shading.

That's impressive, further testament to how dedicated Finland was to it's military vehicles and their war effort.
