Hi Mikael:

I like the subtleness of your weathering. It is noticeable but overly done. I guess the sheen is a personal thing. In looking at my LVG, I originally left the lozenge sort of glossy, but I am rethinking and will be giving it a coat of Dull Coat as it just doesn't look right. The camera can play tricks. I like the 'sheen' on yours.

Best

Mark

Hi Mark – always great to read your comments and thoghts – Thank You very much

I think I'm going to leave the finish as it is now – started to put the engine in last night – pontoons will be next I guess.

That's about as nice as it gets. Really like this build.

I also like a little "sheen". I think that a dead flat is really rare. Even on a dirty weathered, flat painted aircraft there is a bit of a sheen. Below is a shot of the front of the P-40 "Bob's Robin" It is very obviously flat. But at the same time there is a bit of reflectiveness that can be seen. Starting at the tip of the spinner and graduating down a line in the middle and by the sharks teeth where the cowl curves into the intake.

This photo is used for discussion purposes only.

Thank You so much for your kind comments Marc

Also thank You for posting that P40  – very interesting observation, and food for thought.

As I recall the WWI dope never had a dead flat finish, like the WWII stuff – but rather a glossy or silky apperance from the factories. In service this sheen wore off, and became duller.

I also think about the scale effect – a very high gloss looks a bit out of place in 1:72 to me.... A silky gloss seems more appropriate.

Just a bit of random ramblings from me on the subject

Hi Mikael

I really like the effect the weathering has on the lozenge. I think that it came out quite well using the oils.

Keep those pictures coming!

Thank You very much Dennis

Is looking great Mikael. Keep at it...

To everyone else, the secret to adding studd to your stash and SWMBO not finding out about them is just to store them in cupboards. I have five huge cupboards in the garage and my 450 or so kits are in them..

And thank you for the tip – Unfortunately my wifes occupied most of the garage already – may be able to squeeze some in the attic

Greetings fellow modelers.

We're having magnificent summer weather here – so the garden is beckoning – but first a final installment of my Hansa B. build. Yes – it is finished – but I would not say finally, because its been pure a pleasuere to build, and I'm a bit sad its ended...

For real, I actually think this is the best engineered kit I've ever had the pelasure of building and that is saying a lot!

Since my last post I've had very few problems – attaching the pontoons was very straightforward – just be sure you trim the tabs and dry fit (I did, but not enough – so they don't sit quite as snug as they could have). They are very sturdy too, and keeps the plane standing upright. The rest was mostly details and various bits and pieces – so – here's the result:

Well, ladies and gents there you have it... If you're considering buing or building this – don't hesitate – just dive in, you wou'nt be sorry!

But wait... I did say it was finished didn't I? Well Yes I guess the build for KotS is, but I did promise to do a bit of a setting and some figures for it did'nt I? So I guess we're not quite finished with this model as yet  – I'll be back with an update here as it develops.

Best Regards – and Thank You so very much for watching and sharing throughout of this build

Mikael,
Slightly less simply put............................
Stunning; a magnificent build!

Cheers,
Lance

PS:
How far north are you? Our (very limited) gardening efforts are still on hold, temp dropped to -4C last night and our bedding plants are still indoors. We're a hardy bunch of folks here however this Spring is a test.

Oh – very interesting question BTW – I had to whip out the old atlas to check... We're at about the 58°N paralell – which I think would put us at about the same level as Fort Chipewyanin in Alberta?

Pretty much north in worldly terms – but in Sweden I'm considered a southerner. We usually have pretty warm summers though – last night was a pleasant 15C after the sun had set – and our plants have been outside without any trouble since mid april. All thanks to the warm North Atlantic Drift I guess.

Hope your weather will improve soon – I hate cold/rainy summers

Wow, Mikael. To take a really ugly airplane and turn it into a true beauty proves you have the talent. Very well done.

Hi Mikael:

Great job. Really turned out nice. Looking forward to seeing it with figures. I will refer back to this build when I tackle mine, but first, the Albie beckons.

So good. It is possible very long time to enjoy watching a the details of this aircraft. Very realistic. I'm new in this, and I always wondered how to do the weathering on lozenge, I learned a lot in this project. Congratulations on the completion of the aircraft, and eagerly waiting for the continuation of the project.

Mark, Guy, Alex, Dennis, Mark and Dani – Thank You so very much for all of your kind comments on the build – very much apreciated

@ dani – glad you found my loz treatment useful – there are plenty more good advie at Jack Flashs threads Lozenge 101 and Lozenge 201.

@Mark – hope I wount dissapoint with my figures – I'm better with planes than with painting faces

@Guy – beauty is in the eyes of the beholder I find this bird rather leathal looking from certain angles. I think it has something to do with the position of the forward mgs... Like its set to kill or something.

@Marc  –I would'nt mind having your DV on my shelf either

Bestest regards to you all

Mikael

Hi everybody, Hope you,ve had good summer – I have, althogh the wether has left a lot do be desired  –its been pretty warm, but also very wet!

I did promise I was going to get back to you once my little setting for the Hansa was finished – well it took a lot longer than I had anticipated – but its now finally finished. I really ha a great time doing it, and it felt refreshing to do something different for a change. I got to do some figure painting, which I haven't done in a while, and I also got to experiment with some new meduims.

One of the reasons for the rather longwinded conclusion, was because I originally a more ambitios setting in mind. But the different textures and surfaces did in the end not work – so I chucked it out, and redid a simpler setting... Well enough talk – here are some pics:

In terms of construction the pier is made from balsa wood cut to suitable sizes – all painted and weathered with oils. The railtracks are HO items, that fit well with the HO wheels I used for the trolley.

The figures are from Andrea and Modelcellar, and the head for the Andrea U-boat captain is from Hornet. The original head has a beard, which I did'nt think appropiate for a Flieger of the Kaisers Navy. Both figures are finished in oils – and yes the Modelcellar fellow is originally intended as The Red Barons brother – but not in this setting. I had originally planned for three figures, but no matter how I placed them, one seemed to be out of the conversation – so two seasoned marine fliegers on the pier talking about life and the war it is.

The wet stuff was made with a very horrible two component plastic – which came with so many health warnings I'm surprised I survived the ordeal. It did also did stink the garage down in a really bad way that lingered for weeks. Next time I'll use something a little friendlier.

Well there you have it –now its finally truly finished and it takes up a rather large chunc of my display cabinet – but overall Im pretty pleased with it, and it has the feel I was looking for

All and any comments are as usual most welcome.
